Caffe Macaroni Ratings and Reviews
This is the best restaurant in San Francisco. Period. I’ve eaten high end, low end, local dive, tourist favorites, SF classics. None beats Caffe Macaroni. The menu always changes, the dishes are excellent but never have too much going on. The wine list isn’t crazy and has reasonably priced options. The desserts are fantastic. And the service and welcoming atmosphere are just awesome. Best. Restaurant. In. San. Francisco.
Caffe' Macaroni is our favorite Italian restaurant in San Francisco! It is a small neighborhood gem, where the owners Mario and Stephanie provide amazing food and a wonderful experience. There is an extensive menu, as well as half a dozen specials every day that Mario will explain to you. There is also a great wine list with many reasonably priced choices. Highly recommended!!!
This was a wonderful intimate meal. The owner was right there answering questions and telling stories. Be prepared to share space with other couples, but that was part of the charm for us. If you want privacy, go somewhere else. If you want a fun personal experience with amazing food, this is the place.
We used to dine often at Caffe Macaroni before we moved to the east coast. My husband remarked that their sauce reminds him of his nonni's (grandmother) sauce. So we made plans to come back since we were in town. Still as delicious as ever with friendly, prompt service! The olive oil with garlic dip they serve with the bread is worth the trip alone.
Inlove this place. Been there 3 or 4 times in the last few months. The burrata salad has been exquisitly fresh and the wine list tho short is good on variety and price. Usually quite a few specials and everything has been tasty. My favorite Italian place right now.
Disappointed because I specifically requested a table upstairs, but they refused and sat us in a crowded corner booth. I was excited for the ink pasta, but it lacked any flavor. I would be shocked if it wasn’t just premade dried store bought pasta. Was disappointed overall with the price and the quality. The owners were lovely though... I just wish the food was better.
I visited this place based on many positive reviews and I would give it an average rating. We made a reservation and arrived on time. I started to walk in the door behind a waitress that was waiting on a table outside. I figured I needed to check in. She turned around and rudely asked "can I help you" as though I was intruding or doing something wrong. I told her we had a reservation and she rudely told me should couldn't help me but the owner Mario would be down when he could to handle things. I'd have been okay with it had she been nice about it. It was an immediate turn off. It didn't take long and we were seated. The place is small both upstairs and down. It's very loud too so if you are trying to have a conversation, it may pose a challenge if you don't hear well. Our waiter was very nice and worked to take care of us. Mario and the rude woman were visible but were very focused on catering to specific customers and never came to our table as mentioned by many in the reviews. The food we had was decent but I sadly I can get just as good or way better at a local family run Italian establishment in my hometown. I would tell others who may be considering dining there is that it will be average and manage your expectations accordingly. It has been around for a long time so a bit of a fixture for that neighborhood. Definitely an interesting experience though I'm not sure I would make it a priority to return.
We love Caffe Macaroni! I can honestly say that everything on the menu is excellent. The owners, Mario and Stephanie are so welcoming and eager to make each dining experience one to remember. The chicken scallopini is one of our favorites but you cannot go wrong with any of the specials. Fresh fish and produce hand selected from local merchants. Be sure to save room for the in-house made desserts.
Love this place. I come up to work in SF once in a while and my producer introduced me 5 years ago and now make it a point to return every time I'm in town to this awesome little gem. Their food has always been spot on. Their pasta is like velvet and their gniochi as handmade. The choices of the sea are also amazing. The intimate environment is the best. Mario and Stephanie will welcome you and make you feel at home. I can't wait for the next time I'm back in town and have dinner at Caffe Macaroni.
A charming spot to have dinner. The people are all friendly and willing to make your visit perfect.
The pork loin I wanted for dinner was not available,so per recommendation I had the bronsino.
It was cooked perfectly and delicious! My husbands pasta with salmon was also wonderful.
The pasta dish with sausage was very good, but it said it would have peppers which it did not.
Tiramisu was the perfect end to a very tasty dinner.
Delightfully casual, authentically Southern Italian preparations with a menu written in the Neapolitan dialect, friendly owner and wait staff and good Italian red wine... What more could you want..."elegance?" I guess you can bring your own white table cloth! Just good, Southern Italian cooking.
What a terrific find!!!! Our waiter was hilarious.....a little hard to understand sometimes. After all, he was the real deal and so is this fabulous Italian restaurant. We felt like we were back in Italy. The atmosphere is eclectic to say the least but so perfect. It is a very small restaurant with some sidewalk dining in front and just a few tables on the first floor. We dined upstairs and what a unique experience. A tiny winding staircase leads you to a fair sized room with maybe 7 tables plus a half moon shaped "community" table facing a wall of windows. There was a soft breeze from the open windows....are you getting the picture? It was wonderful!!!! I had the ravioli which was devine. My husband had a special dish they were offering which was filled with clams, mussels, squid, octopus and shrimp in a delightful sauce serve over black linguine. I had to wrestle him for a taste. We both ate every bite and opted to follow it up with a shared piece of the lemonchello cake. We were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and they made it so special. Candles singing and lemonchello shots (which is made in house). The owner and staff are delightful and make you feel as if you're one of the family. If you are ever in the beautiful city of San Francisco please don't miss your chance to experience this delightful restaurant. You will be thanking me, I promise.
First I will say the food was exceptional, which is the main draw of a restaurant. The restaurant opens at 5:00 for dinner. Our reservation was for 5:15. The kitchen staff seemed surprised to see us. No other customers were present. They told us the waiter was not here yet and we could sit where we liked. No offer of a beverage or bread or menus. The waiter finally arrived at 5:30. I think he might have been the owner. No apology, not very friendly, but took our order. The food arrived promptly and I was amazed what came out of such a tiny kitchen.
We ordered the assortment of cured meats which arrived with good Italian bread and a house-made garlic and olive oil dipping sauce. All was outstanding and I would love a jar of the dipping sauce to take home. My husband, the wine snob, really enjoyed the Italian wine.
I can't recall the name. I had the gnocchi with Gorgonzola, chicken and radicchio. Excellent. My Italian husband ordered mixed pasta with sausages. Pasta perfectly al dente, tomato sauce exceptional. He was in heaven. No grated cheese was offered and it took some time to get the waiter's attention. We were too full for dessert.
Caffe Macaroni is a charming little place, little being the operative word. Inside seats about 10.
There is outside seating with very tiny tables and no heat for the cool San Francisco evenings.
There is an upstairs which we did not see but imagine is equally cozy. We sat on the first floor at the window and had a great time people watching. The background music of old Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin fit right in but it was radio with commercials which annoyed.
The price was right. Dinner for two with wine for $100 + tip in North Beach or anywhere in San Francisco is a bargain.
I said I would not recommend to friends because I don't think most of my friends would enjoy this particular experience. However, for the adventurous diner looking for authentic Italian home cooking, I say give it a whirl.
Really great place - went two times in a week just because the food was homemade and totally authentic. The service is like being at home with your father, mother, sister and brother! I love this place and will be back again - great owners and family run establishment.
