Caffe Gelato Ratings and Reviews
As always Casey was great, he is our regular waiter, (we see him more often than our friends). We eat here almost every week, may be more than once during school days. We always enjoy lunch here and dinner occasionally as it is not that close to home. Sometimes we even get take-out for dinner after our lunch.
We celebrated our daughter's graduation from the University of Delaware last week with dinner here and had a fabulous meal. The food was terrific and the service was excellent. A special shout out to Ryan, our waiter, who was kind, patient and very attentive. We had a large group of 10, and everything was perfect. And the gelato was amazing! Thanks so much for a great time.
As always, the food was great. Service was very good given the fact that a wedding rehearsal dinner and a group of about 60 guys from U of MD were there as well. The latter, on occasion also made it a bit louder than usual.
Overall a great place for any occasion, but I don't recommend going without reservations....unless you don't mind waiting for up to an hour.
We requested a vegetarian menu and ordered from it. The server brought our appetizer, but dropped a piece of it on me trying to get it to the table. It also included meat which wasn't noticed by our server. It is relatively dark inside for ambiance so a few bites were eaten before we realized it wasn't a vegetarian option so we asked for what we initially ordered. It wasn't all that great. We expected a warm plate of roasted vegetables, but they were cold (which wasn't disclosed on the menu). The tortellini in red sauce was good, nothing outstanding. My wife had the vegan pasta with veggies in red sauce. She said it was mediocre; not very flavorful. Overall, it was a disappointing meal with lackluster overpriced food. We won't be going back. We have visited this restaurant many times over the years and have seen a steady decline in their food. This was our last visit and, sadly, a poor birthday choice for dinner.
We always enjoy eating at Gelato and have been introducing this place to a lot of our friends. This time, the food was not that great. May be it was too early. Hopefully things will improve, otherwise, we have to find another restaurant that we can go every week.
We spent an evening at Gelato's for our anniversary for two reasons: 1) good past experiences; 2) a great coupon. We chose the small plates, which were terrific across the board. The mussels are superb. The lobster gnocchi is not far behind. We were seated in a noisy little room, something new for us, but quieted down when 'they' left. The wine, as is becoming normal, is painfully overpriced by the glass. But at least it worked with our dinner. Of course we had to have the gelato. If you have experienced this treat in its 'home land', you could be disappointed. We avoided the weak fruit offerings and enjoyed our selections. We will be back- very good service, a creative menu that is very well done.
Food outstanding. Only real complaint was a 21 Year old female tried to tell me about the wine I chose as if she had vast experience. Then she opened the bottle, never pouring me a taste. She proceeded to fill the wine glass way to full for me to swirl and aerate. Value was good for meal but wine way overpriced at 4X the cost.
Although we have had very good past dining experiences here, this one failed to meet our expectations, both in the service and the food areas. My soup was barely warm and when I finally got a server to request a hot one, the second one was no warmer than the first. The server said she was sorry and would tell the chef. That was the solution. No other options. As it was on the early side for dinner, there were not a lot of patrons and yet the service was quite slow. Disappointing evening so I cannot give it more than a fair rating for this visit, although I have had excellent food and service on other occasions.
Food is always good. But seriously ... 13 min to be created and another 11 minutes for a glass of wine! Then, I ordered lobster risotto and good bolognese? Maybe your wait staff should write down their orders.
Good food. Bad service. Overall, not recommended. If you are charging that much for your food, I clearly should not wait 23 minutes for a glass of wine. My food was almost gone. Y the time I got my second glass.
Having been here before, we were quite disappointed this time. I guess perhaps they were busier than expected, as we noticed that the hostess and bartender were helping out, but we should have been able to get our salads quickly. Instead we waited at least 1/2 hour. The daily special ravioli was great but everything else was mediocre. We will not be back, except for the gelato, that is always wonderful!
Cafe Gelato has a very nice ambiance and a good wait staff. However, I was very disappointed with my meal. The bread they gave us at the start had no flavor. I actually considered putting salt on it. I guess thats why they insist you dunk it in cheese. The entre I got was the salmon tortellini. They brought it out in this huge bowl even though it was only a quarter of the way full. It also was very undercooked. I could have made better tortellini. Also, the salmon was stuffed inside the tortellini, not onto. Definitely way overpriced at $24. I will not go back.
Great location at UofD. Accommodating kitchen allowed us to alter sides. Filet was a bit well done but well seasoned. Brussels sprouts and bruschetta quite yummy . Ate outdoors which was nice on a nice day. Got a parking ticket even when we paid but with it receipt had to fight.
Apparently half price bottles of wine are no longer offered even though a sign is in the window saying Wednesday was half price bottles. Food came out all at one time, even though my other guest hadn't arrived. My first glass of wine came with red lipstick on the glass. Nevertheless food was good and waitress friendly. Had great experiences here in the past, hope this was just a bad day and not a slipping restaurant.
went on a Sunday evening. very nice layout. Hostes was great. Table was fine. The music felt out of place for an upscale Italian theme. It was an 80's/90's pop rock mix. Better suited for a burger joint or sports bar. Our server was polite but it became obvious that he was very inexperienced. I don't have a problem with that but it impacted the overall experience as the pacing was poor and he was not very knowledgeable. Ordered a bottle of Bouchaine Pinot Noir, $49. It was very nice. Ordered crispy calamari at his suggestion. When it came out it was limp and there were no tentacles, only rings. sauces were good. We offered for them to re make, but they ended up just taking it off the bill. Fine. next course was roasted beet salad. It was very nice. For entree we decided to share a pasta as we were dining late. We chose the smoked salmon tortellini at the recommendation of the server and a guest sitting near by. Our server asked if we wanted it split into two bowls and indicated we might get a little more that way. We said fine. It came out in the regular bowl. He apparently forgot about splitting it. He asked if we wanted plates to share it with, and brought us two small butter/bread plates which would have never worked. We just ate right from the bowl. The tortellini's were chewy at the edges and the filling was "meh." The sauce was light but lacked flavor. Very disappointing. We ate about two thirds and called it quits. I definitely had room for dessert and we sampled a couple of gelato options but neither tasted that great. we declined and called it a night. Mediocre is the best I can offer about the whole experience. I can't imagine going back. It's a shame.
As mentioned by others, drinks were very slow to arrive. And they were just glasses of wine. Food was also a bit slow, but good. Lamb chop and frutti de mari were satisfying. The check was a little higher than deserving for the overall quality of experience.
Caffe Gelato was a pleasant experience. My cousin and I both enjoyed it. The food was very good overall. My green salad was excellent. My salmon tortellini was ok, but not totally to my personal taste. The wine list offers a good selection. The background music was just a tad louder than needed, but not obnoxious. We were still able to converse.
The service was very attentive and personable. I would go back again.
