Caffe Gelato Ratings and Reviews
Business dinner on Sunday with out of town guests. I'm local and have been coming to Caffe Gelato for many years. Unfortunately the Sunday night staff must be new to the job or poor at waiting on table - filling water glasses to the brim so they spill, bringing a small saucer of olive oil to the table so full it spills on the table, articles on the table etc. Adding tap water to a glass of sparkling water etc. food was great and saved the day - guests had steaks and I had a special entree. And the gelato at the end was very good. Will return, just not on a Sunday!
We were a party of 8 - we all enjoyed our dinner and we all ordered something different - great variety- lots of food and the meats and seafood cooked perfectly - there were those in party that had unique food allergies and they were all accommodated - great service and food served in a timely manner - can’t wait to go back and try other items on menu!!
We booked a table for 6. They gave us a private room. It was perfect for us. Long term roommates from a few 😘 years ago on a busy Halloween weekend in a college time. Brandy (our server) was attentive but gave us all the time we wanted. Food was great! Thanks!
I have been here several times but this this time - this restaurant wasn't working well. No table ready when we arrived despite half the restaurant being empty. The waitresses switched and seemed angry at each other. Food was "OK" and service mediocre at best. If I wasn't here before - might not return. I will give this place anther try
Great food, atmosphere, and service. We visited this restaurant 3 times in 2 weeks and were happy with all of our meals and the service on every visit. Some of us dine gluten free and were thrilled with the options and taste. GF bread and pasta is always a welcome bonus. And the pasta was cooked properly, not falling apart like many places that try to cook GF pasta. Definitely recommend and will return.
Overall, it was a good meal. We went and did the two salads and pastas for $29 deal which felt extremely worth it. If the deal was not there I would not have spent the full price for their meals. I had the seafood gnocchi and had leftovers for lunch the next day.
Cafe Gelato is a so-so restaurant, at best, that's located in a college town so it doesn't need to strive for anything more than mediocre because parents, students and alumni will always frequent it. I've been here on 3 occasions and each time I say I won't go back. This past time we were lured in with a coupon ($20 off), but it wasn't worth it. First, we had a very early reservation - 5 PM - and the hostess still had confusion about where to seat us even though the restaurant was mostly empty. She was going to seat us at a table for 6-8, then realized she may need that table for a larger group and sat us at a 4-top (good thinking). Then our waiter came over with water which he splashed onto the table spraying 2 of us and leaving a puddle of water on the table and on the floor. He said he'd be back to clean it up, but we had to ask him to mop it up the next time he came back because it appeared he had already forgotten about it. We all thought the waiter seemed like he was intoxicated, which didn't make for great communication. My food was good, but another member of our party said the filet was very rubbery. And then finally there was a problem using the coupon. It was eventually deducted from the bill, but made for an awkward ending to an already seriously lackluster dining experience. Thank goodness we were going to a fun party afterwards (hence, the early dinner), so we could forget all about it. There are many other restaurants not too far away that do a much better job than Cafe Gelato; go there.
Ryan and his team did a great job. My wife Netesha and I were in for our 10th anniversary and food was delicious. It was a hard toss up between the veal chop and and herb crusted lamb. I love the veal chop they have but I tried the lamb with blackberry port reduction and was definitely not disappointed.
Parents weekend at UD can be incredibly busy. Caffe Gelato did a great job with timely seating of their reservations and the menu they selected. It made room for more people by having a limited menu - a very delicious menu. Food was great and the service outstanding. A wonderful experience.
Excellent visit to Cafe Gelato in a Saturday night , away Football Game Day, with a group of 6. We all had salads and some had small plates. Very good selection and fresh ingredients. The beet salad was outstanding and even better was the sautéed muscles! The recipe is great.
We make it to Caffe Gelato 2 or 3 times a year, and while they are a favorite among my group of friends, I always struggle to find a vegetarian main dish option that I am excited about, so once again, I had the tortellini. The biggest reason that this was not a 5 star review is that we were celebrating my boyfriend's birthday. He had received a postcard for $20 off of our meal. We ordered two bottles because it was half priced bottle night. When the check came, we were told we could not use both promotions ($20 postcard and half priced bottles). This felt wrong to me for several reasons: 1) Everyone in the restaurant got half priced bottles so what was the special birthday deal? 2) We showed the waitress the postcard at the beginning of the meal and talked about the half priced bottles and were not warned we would not get to use both and 3) the tab before tip was over $200 after the wine discount so haggling about honoring their own promotions felt really shabby. In the future, I suggest putting a dollar restriction on the birthday offer, e.g., $20 of $50 after all discounts. That way, if the check is small, you can explain the customers didn't meet the $50 threshold and they can choose to apply either the wine discount or the birthday credit.
I really would like to keep going here but I am done . There are a few things you can count on at Caffe Gelato. The first is a very good meal at a slightly inflated price. The second, is very uneven service. I have gone 12-15 times over past 6 years and it is always the same . Tonight hit a new low-they never put my order in. There are many better restaurants in Newark where you can
actually get food.
PS Mr German has reached out to us to apologize . I do appreciate the generous return visit offer , I can not accept. I refuse to take further chances on his restaurant and strongly suggest you go elsewhere in Newark
The food and cleanliness of this restaurant is far below standard. The "home made focaccia bread" had the same consistency of Wonder Bread with a little garlic powder and oregano. Basically inedible. I ordered the smoked salmon tortellini with tomatoes and peas, and the pasta had an extremely thick, dry consistency. It had very little flavor with an almost nonexistent sauce and canned peas. Both my husband and daughter ordered Caesar Salads that arrived without dressing. The Filet Mignon was good however, and was cooked well with a nice Demi glacé. Caramel gelato with brownies was okay, but only 4 small chunks of Brownie were scattered over the ice cream. Overall - would not return. Just cancelled a reservation for 15 over parent's weekend coming up in October. And the restaurant itself (and bathroom especially) need some serious cleaning and updating. This place is a no- go.
The noise level, always an issue, seemed louder on 9/9/2017. I was glad we received the booth seating as we requested, as the high cushions of the booth tend to dampen the noise somewhat. Our waiter, Bernard, was attentive and prompt, and was knowledgeable of the menu's gluten free options. The portions were generous. Other than the noise level, it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
I truly enjoy Caffe Gelato and kind of sad that I didn't patronize while I was a student at the University. The food is awesome and the ambiance is welcoming and relaxing. I also appreciate supporting the mostly students that work at the establishment as the service has always been great. After 1 pm is the best time to go for Sunday brunch.
Always love Gelato's Lump crab and shrimp capellini, but not this time. The sauce was salty and simply different, not as good. The focaccia was hard and cold. Guess Sunday is not a good time to eat at this restaurant. Fortunately service was still good, Bernard was very attentive and great.
We celebrated my wife's birthday with our two kids and a son-in-law. We had a great meal - five great appetizers, five great entrees, five great desserts, plus drinks. Service was attentive and efficient. We were very happy to have chosen this locale for a special occasion. Menu highlights: braised short rib and polenta appetizer, shaved brussells sprout salad, pistachio crusted salmon on smoked tomato risotto and black garlic, and, of course, gelato.
I met a friend I had not seen for some time for lunch and we talked for a while and had lunch. No one tried to rush us. They were very accommodating and allowed us to catch up . I have dined there many time and would recommend it to anyone who wants a great meal and nice atmosphere.
