Caffe Delle Stelle Ratings and Reviews
Reservations were for 5:00 PM, but doors didn't open until 5:07 - we had to wait outside, in front of the restaurant. Employees right inside the door did not even acknowledge us. Service was slow, despite the place being empty for the first half-hour. However, our server was really very nice.
She was the best thing about the place. Filet of sole was average, veal was very tough - inedible.
The waitress did alert the kitchen, and had them prepare a serving of sole to replace the veal. She also comped our dessert. We tipped her well, but won't be going back.
The food and service were great. There was one group that was on the other side of the restaurant that made it impossible for us to have a good dinner conversation. They had members of the group that were really loud!! One had a caustic loud voice. Not usual for this restaurant but definitely put a dim on this dinner.
We enjoyed both dinner and lunch the following day at Caffe Stella. Excellent traditional Italian cuisine with some innovative twists. The grilled calamari appetizer done with white beans and arrugula was delicious. We also enjoyed spaghetti with sea bass and a buccatini with beef and pork sugo for our dinner. At lunch we had the Italian Cobb salad and the procuitto panini.
Service was attentive on both visits. A definite must try place.
We have been coming to this restaurant for a long time to enjoy the food, convenience to the Symphony Hall and friendly staff. However this particular occasion involved a table of 18 people seated next to us who were captivated by one young woman who proceeded to talk Loudly for the whole time , waving her arms and generally dominating the table. She hardly came up for breath. The other folks in her party didn't speak, just watched in silence as she held court. There were other tables near us who rolled their eyes and surely wanted to snatch her from her perch. It was a busy night and we were reluctant to talk to the server as it wouldn't have done any good to approach her as she seemed blissfully ignorant and brilliantly blabbing on. Sorry ..it did ruin our dinner.
This was my third time dining here before a theater event, and they are good at making sure you get in and out by a certain time if needed. They can get busy before a sold-out show, so make a reservation to ensure getting a table ... I have seen the crowd before and had to look elsewhere when on a time crunch. Food is good and prices are reasonable.
We always come to Caffe Delle Stelle before we go to the San Francisco Opera. The restaurant is located a very short walk away from the Opera House. We tried a different salad, to share, this time...and though it was very large and tasty....we felt that there should have been more figs and cheese. We both had the filet of sole and it was fantastic!!!! The fish was very fresh, tender and absolutely delicious! For dessert, we shared the tiramisu which was very rich and yummy. The service was excellent.
Really enjoyed the broccoli and kale soup which is surprisingly hearty. The crespella polenta crepe filled with vegetables is a nice vegetarian option . The pork meatballs are fine. Dessert was semifreddo , just ok, had a refrigerator taste. I do want to comment on the coffee which was nice and mild with nice flavor.
We come into the city for the SF Symphony, and this is one of our favorite places to have dinner before the performance. It is an easy walk from to and from Bart and Davies Hall. The menu is good, and they usually have a couple of specials to add some variety. The service is almost always good. Our favorite waiter, Victor, is always so attentive and so friendly.
We have been dining here for years and have always enjoyed it very much. Friendly service, good food at a reasonable price, etc. Last Thursday, before a performance, the service was awful...We waited over one hour for our food. This has never happened before and no explanation was given. It was very puzzling as the restaurant was not full. After this experience none of us plans to return.
Caffe Delle Stelle has been a wonderful pre-Opera venue in which to have a delightful Italian meal. The calamari appetizer on this occasion was perfectly prepared, tender and partnered with white beans with a piquant sauce. The three of us all enjoyed our entrees: one had sole, another chicken with pesto mashed potatoes while I had a tuna salad that complemented the calamari dish well. The wine list is reasonable. We look forward to returning.
I had delicious Petrale, melt in my mouth. And it's a very comfortable contrast to the upscale overpriced restaurants in the area. The wine selection was comprehensive but not excessive and the prices were reasonable. I liked the corner location with lots of natural light for all the tables. And it is a great choice for all of the theater and other event options in the Civic Center area.
What happened to the decor? Used to be very lushly European and now it is stark and unadorned. the food and service were fine but the lack of decor was a strong detraction. Della Stella used to be high on my list of pre-theater dining, but I don't think I'll return anytime soon. I hate to be so judgmental but dining there last week made me realize ho much the entire experience adds to the dinner. The food was fine but it was empty and sort of sad inside. It felt like I was eating in a school cafeteria with utilitarian tables and no decor. Like the place had been gutted in a fire and had not been refurbished before reopening. Very sad.
Cafe Delle Stelle was amazing. My boyfriend and my parents were meeting for the first time, and I couldn't have picked a better location. The food was great, the service was sublime, and the people-watching was unrivaled. I'll gladly go back in the future! Thank you so much!
We really enjoyed Caffe della Stelle. It was our first time, chosen online for dinner before a concert at SF Jazz. Really nice to have vegetarian options at a nice Italian restaurant. Service was excellent, both the main server and the busboy/table clearer/bread/water guy. Our reservation was at 5:15, and it was great. By 6:15pm, it was getting mighty loud. So we finished up and took a walk before our concert.
Good spot, we'll go back.
Here for a pre-Symphony dinner. first time. The service was friendly and attentive. the appetizers were mixed. The bruschetta with pate' was heavy, but tasty, the calamari was fresh and in a lively basil rich sauce. My wife reported the ahi salad excellent, seared perfectly. My pasta (with house made sausage) was abundant but mediocre, and really much too much for a pre-concert meal. All in all OK, not great, and a decent pre-concert spot close to the venues. I would recommend sharing appetizers and entrees given portion size, especially the pasta.
Our reservation was at 5:30 pm. We arrived at 5:20 pm and were seated promptly. The restaurant was fairly empty at that time. We left at 7:30pm. Bottom line. All was bad, from the lack of service, the tasteless veal, and the inattentive bus staff. My recommendation. Try somewhere else.................................
