This charming Upper East Side café exudes comfort and conviviality, with parchment shades that soften light from sconces that warm the room. Eager to please, the kitchen uses high-quality ingredients for its mix-and-match philosophy. Patrons can choose their meats, their pastas (dried or, for a slight surcharge, the restaurant's own homemade), and their sauces (from a simple marinara to a more complex carbonara) as they create their own dishes. Always outstanding homemade pasta will never disappoint. It’s a rare find to come upon a restaurant that offers pasta stuffed with veal in addition to the more oftenly crafted cheese fillings. My wife had a shrimp and scallop plate for dinner. Although she commented that the shrimp were delicious (but not enough), the scallops were rubbery and dissapointing. Chalk that one up to a sous-chef - we’re still big fans and will be back...for the pasta!
This restaurant looks reasonable on line with moderately priced entrees...BEWARE. There is no wine available under $59, most run $70, $80 and up. They have a suspicious policy of offering a 30% discount of wine on the spot - - still expensive at $39. then there is a 50% on Sundays?????
— just to make you aware of how overpriced this wine list is. The food is barely passable with pasta that apparently has been cooked for days.
Small restaurant, crowded with tables close together, but very cute. Noise level is high . There is a beautiful garden. We weren’t able to be seated there but we were lucky to get an outside seat in the front on the small porch. Food was delicious. Prosciutto & melon , Caprese salad , Seafood linguine & homemade Black Linguini were all excellent.
This is a stalwart on the UES! I had my first date with my wife here nearly 25 years ago and since we've moved out of NY we seek it out to bring our 3 children for dinner!

Outstanding homemade pastas are a trademark of the Cafe Buon Gusto Restaurants. The UES location is my favorite because it is less smoky and regulars can be foodies who love the food instead of just those who pop in and out for a drink and a smoke and to chat up the management. Service is great - the chef is happy to work with you to make your meal special or to substitute an ingredient in case of an allergy and the wines are affordable.
The food was fine. It wasn't anything to write home about. Also I was annoyed that different wait staff and bussers checked on us quite excessively and interrupted our conversation multiple times while we were speaking mid-sentence without waiting to get our attention before speaking. It seems trivial but it happened a few times and each time I was mid-thought which is probably why I was much more sensitive to it.
In any case, it wasn't bad but wasn't somewhere I wouldn't go again for the price unless it was a convenient option and all other nearby restaurants were booked.
Service was good but food was bland/mediocre. Veal was tough, salad too cheap to use grape or cherry tomatoes (contained regular beef tomatoes), mushroom appetizer like nothing I've tasted before--no flavor or the wrong flavors for the dish. Bread basket-bread was cold. Eggplant parm: no spice/flavor, missing ingredients.
Absolutely delicious pasta! Good house made egg pasta paired with delicious sauces are the strength of the restaurant. A small, quiet space during an off-hours lunch with no other diners afforded us a very nice meal for four with attentive, cheerful service from the young wait staff. Desserts were good without being outstanding, a nice coda to the stellar pasta. Prices were on the high side, but it was Manhattan.
