Cafeteria Boston Ratings and Reviews
Dined at Cafeteria twice last week while attending a conference at the Hynes Convention Center (this place is like 400 feet from front door to front door). The first day I was there for Brunch, which was fine but not outstanding. One day later, I was there with a different group of colleagues for lunch, and was much happier. The lunch menu is better - more interesting. In both cases the food was delicious (the bolognese I had for lunch was absolutely fantastic) and my colleagues also seemed really happy with their lunch dishes and just mediocre about the brunch fare the day before. I actually think Cafeteria should to a menu overhaul - this sounds picky but the look of the menu gives you low expectations. Cafeteria's ambiance is bright, casual and pleasant - but with their current menu you get more of a "diner" feel. With a different, more elegant menu it would have more of a "delightful luncheon" feel. Of course, if the target audience is hipsters they're probably right on target, and I should buy some ironic T-shirts.
We went to Cafeteria Boston with our twins, age 3, for Sunday breakfast and were pleasantly surprised by the experience. The kid-sized portions were appropriate and extremely palatable (I'm going to get the kids pancakes for myself next time) but weren't really "kid food" but smaller portions of terrific, in this case, brunch. Also, the coffee was really good (and I'm a total coffee snob). With a great ambiance on the terrace and an attentive staff - my first coffee was on the cool side - we got a great value for our family. We absolutely will go back next time we're in the neighborhood.
Showed up on time for our reservation and there were quite a few walk in parties. The hostess took their names down and said she would be with us in a minute. I watched her seat a few of the walk in over 20 minutes. I walked over and asked if she forgot about us and she answered yes! They then stuck us in a tiny table outside with no umbrella directly in the sun. Food was meh - truly unimpressive.
You are better off waiting at one of the other restaurants on the block.
Outstanding food but service was just so-so. Our coffee took far too long to show up (our waiter pulled a disappearing act later handwaved by a manager as "he's at the brew station"). The kids ordered the pancakes (1 order was enough for them to split), but even though we had two orders of pancakes at the table we had to ask repeatedly for syrup, as none came with the food. On the other hand, the pancakes, the huevos rancheros, and the French toast were all excellent (the coffee wasn't worth the wait). Go for the food for sure, but don't be surprised if the wait staff needs a bit of prodding.
We had a reservation for inside, but there was a table on the patio so we ended up eating there, which was fantastic! Only one beer on draft. We got the spinach artichoke dip to start, which was more pureed than we expected but very tasty. My group got the fish and chips (well cooked, but needed a little salt, which wasn't on the table), the gazpacho (delicious), burger (slightly overcooked - med well instead of medium - but tasty), and taco salad (a little lacking on dressing, but otherwise good). Service was impeccable, waters were filled regularly, and our food was delivered in a timely manner. Great experience, and a perfect dinner before heading to Fenway!
The service was awful, customers who came after us were served before us. We waited almost 45 min for salad, grilled cheese, and a fish entree. The server seemed as if he didn't care we waited so long even after we complained. The food was mediocre, they forgot my chicken on my salad and the chicken came out asap after I complained, which makes me question the quality and freshness of it. Even the spinach artichoke appetizer took 20 min to come out. The restaurant wasn't even that full, which means there's no reason why it should have took so long. The only thing that i appreciated was when the server took my card after my friends fought me over the bill lmao. The service has gone so downhill, and I will not be returning after being a loyal customer.
Our waiter kept disappearing for an eternity, and several times we needed to ask the hostess or another server to track him down. The noise was out of control (not helped by a screaming baby, but even besides that conversation echoed off the basement walls and concrete floor). The food was OK and reasonably priced, but uninspired. I was told the dish I really wanted, the chicken, would have a wait time 25 minutes longer than the other meals (why?!) so I substituted with the cod--which was paired with ice-cold asparagus, which seemed to be intentional but was unappetizing. On top of that, the booth was apparently made for very twiggy people - my average-sized dinner companions were not at all comfortable. Overall, not a pleasant experience.
I've been to Cafeteria many times now and the food never ceases to be great! They always have fresh fruit and brunch on the weekend is an absolute must to do! Their lunch options are also very great! Although the vegetarian options are few, they're so tasty that I keep revisiting. The Spinach dip is a must-have!
