Taking its name from the production company of legendary film creator Francis Ford Coppola, Caf Zoetrope in San Francisco, CA is tucked into the landmark Sentinel Building. A European style caf, it offers authentic Italian fare in an unforgettable setting. It also serves up wine from Coppola's vineyard to work perfectly with the dishes.
The menu at Caf Zoetrope is perfect for a family or group of friends, including shareable starters like the picatta tray full of cheeses and meats. There are many large and amazingly fresh salads, panini sandwiches and impressive house specialties at Caf Zoetrope. Plenty of pasta options along with pizza and calzones keep things casual, and there are many fun cocktails to savor if you prefer.
Perfect in every way! (Except for the street noise which can’t be helped!)
Cafe Zoetrope is always a great place to dine. Staff, food, and atmosphere are always top notch, even during these trying times.
Service was superb, food was great.
Loved the ambience , my wife's food was very good, my short ribs were very tough and hard to eat, salad was very nice
Particularly delicious homemade tiramisù and panna cotta.
We were greeted and taken to the nicest corner table. The menu was varied and interesting. We appreciated the service of our waiter and their willingness to let us sit at the table for awhile. Very interesting decor and setting!
Not a bad place, just not what you'd expect for North Beach Italian. Food was ok, service ok, ambience pretty nice but next time will look elsewhere.
Good spot, pizza Orginale was great, thin crust , simple, delicious, lovely pizza! Listen to your waitstaff, they are in the know,...it is $$$ tho..
The bar is best for wine as it being FFC. Cocktails are limited (at least in my visits). There are wine tastings, but we didn't partake, however, the offerings sounded nice. After prime lunch hours are the way to go, however, there isn't a happy hour or a decreased price menu. In my and the waitstaff opion , do not order the cannoli, the tiramisu is MUCH better. So good ordered another to go, but sadly we left our to go box at the table... Wow it it was fabulous, so bummed...
Loved everything: the building, what it means to cinema lovers, the menu, the ingredients, the wine, the interior design, and the kind attention of waiters. I had pizza, pasta, cafe, wine, dessert... loved it so much, that I visited 4 times in less than a week. The Coppola brand means a lot, so I knew it was a great chance to enjoy the vibes of this great director translated into food. Malfatti... I have no words to describe Malfatti.
I know I´ll go back to San Francisco, and this will be my first stop. It´s MY place in SF.
Every time I am in San Fran this is a "must go" for me and anyone with me. This time my family got to go and we loved it. Excellent food and great atmosphere. The pizza is top shelf (Sofia) and was loaded. Pasta cooked el Dante and the sauce is fresh and delicious. I could eat here every night.
Excellent pre race dinner with friends! Food and service were excellent and had very friendly servers and neighboring tables full of great advice for our next stop in Wine Country!
Great place for cinema lovers and Coppola fans. Great pizzas and ambiance. I would like to come back when I come back to San Francisco.
Love the short story vending machine!!!!
The restaurant was very crowded and very very noisy. I could barely speak to my date as it was so loud and the tables were so close to each other. This is a very small restaurant. The food was delicious though and we wanted to go there for the architectural and cinematic significance.
Great staff and nice location. Went here for a friend who was visiting and sadly it really is just a tourist destination. I would not jump at the chance to go back.
excellent! A great time! Would go back again and recommend it to all my friends and family!
The food was top notch and prices were pretty reasonable compared to most. Seeing the Coppola memorabilia was interesting too.
This is one of the finest restaurants I've ever visited. I highly recommend the mushroom appetizer and caesar salad.
Went to Zoetrope for Father's Day. Place was not totally full but service was very slow. One table for two walked in, ordered after us, and got their food, finished it, and left before we got our food. Took over an hour from ordering to eating.
Waitress offered free drinks due to the slowness of the food. Nice gesture, but still slow.
The food itself was very tasty. Maybe it was because we were hungry.
One of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. If you are looking for a nice comfortable place for a good meal where you can have a conversation without yelling this is the place. Never disappoints.
The food was very good but the service was very poor . The waiter and host acted very hautain and it was as if we had to be grateful tot have the opportunity to have diner with them .Very customer unfriendly . For this reason we would never go there again .
I dine here fairly frequently and it's always a great pleasure. The food is wonderful and the wines are from the Coppola winery - equally delicious and so complementary to the hearty Italian fare. On this occasion four of us who were friends in college (UC Berkeley) got together to eat, drink, and converse (a bit raucously, I might add.) Two of us hadn't seen the other two in almost 40 years. What better place than Cafe Zoetrope for this reunion? Welcoming, relaxing, comfortable, with a full bar and the best chocolate mousse. Always my go-to restaurant.
The lasagna was outstanding, chicken cacciatore and clam linquini were good. We had a late Saturday night dinner, and it appeared that the wait staff were ready to leave, and declined our request to contact a cab. Still - it's a very cool restaurant, great ambience and decor, and good location in North Beach, and I recommend it.
My friend and I enjoyed the ambiance, the food and the great service.
The roasted potatoes and salad were wonderful. The wine even better. I was a little disappointed with the ribs as they were a bit tough.
Our server, Erin, was outstanding.
Unfortunately we expected more given the "Coppola" hype plus the history of the building (former "Hungry I") location once owned by the Kingston Trio, et al.) Sadly food was very disappointing. Would have been happy with mediocre. Fell below that!
It's hard to tell if Cafe Zoetrope is modeled after every other Italian cafe or the other way around. It's full of vintage movie posters from "The Godfather" and others. There are no shortage of reminders it's Francis Ford Coppola's place. Fortunately, the guy has a taste for the good life, so it's not done in a schlocky Planet Hollywood style. The bottles of Coppola wine everywhere is the only thing lacking subtly.
It's a little touristy, but don't let that stop you from going. It's in a decent location. The service was warm and welcoming, and the food was solid Italian.
Love this place, we go often
We are Coppola wine club members so we get a discount when we dine, but I'd go anyway
Love the wait staff and the no rush feeling, the prices are great too! The building is amazing and I tell everyone from out of town to have lunch or dinner there.
The pizza was delicious - thin crisp crust, not too much cheese, and yummy toppings (I had the Four Seasons, which they made meatless for me upon request). Also had the classic Caesar Salad, which was yummy. We were there at an odd time @ 3pm, so it was quiet, which was really lovely. Server was very friendly and helpful - my only complaint is that we were left with empty water glasses several times with nobody checking on us. All in all I really like Zoetrope and will definitely go back!
I would always see the restaurant and felt a connection and wanted to have a romantic dinner with my wife. We tried Zoetrope on our own with no research or recommendations, just completely based on the connection I felt. We were not disappointed at all and would go back.
The Caesar salad was great! The wine was nice. The gnocchi was actually gnudi but was lovely! The best dish we had between the 4 of us!! I thought the food overall was consistent good Italian but nothing fabulous. Fun building! Love all the Coppola memorabilia!
Service was sporadic at best. Water seldom refilled, waiter tended to be MIA most of the time. Very nice and accommodating when he was there.
Been there, done it now. Doubt I'll be back. Too many awesome Italian restaurants in the City
Been there twice. First time we gave up our reservation and ate dinner at the bar. Great time talking with people. Excellent bar, and we love Coppola wines. Last time we had a cocktail at the bar and then had dinner in the restaurant. Great food and service. It was an easy walk from our hotel in Fisherman's Wharf. Also, Doc's Cellar (with live music) is right across the street.
My wife and I love Cafe Zoetrope and eat here every time we visit San Francisco. The food, the service and the atmosphere always makes it a wonderful experience.
My husband and I have now been to Cafe Zoetrope twice and both times enjoyed simple pasta and a good glass of wine. The best part was that we could actually talk to each other without a lot of other noise bothering us. The service was excellent.
Atmosphere is 100% vintage SF. High Ratings we read attracted us to this restaurant but we didn't have the same experience. We brought our own wine and staff seemed surprised that we would want it opened. Inconsistent service pace was noticeable but did not much bother us. Attitude was generally inattentive, but pleasant.
Great experience! Food was delicious. Service was exceptional!
We had spect many afternoons basking in the late afternoon sun on the Kearny patio, but we finally had the chance to do dinner and we really enjoyed the antipasti platter and a pizza to go with the great Coppola Rosé and Malbec. It's very small inside but quite cozy and quiet making for a very pleasant meal.
The restaurant is located on a corner and pie shaped. it is small but fun to visit for it has so many pictures on the walls about the Coppola family and films. The service was excellent and the food was good.
Great decor and staff. Food ok, well prepared . North beach without the hassles.
When my husband and I want to go out for a romantic dinner that's neither too formal nor too casual, we go to Cafe Zoetrope. The food's always great and never pretentious. And between a full bar and Coppola wines, we end up very happy patrons. The service is especially good. We feel welcome and well-taken care of by the easy-going but attentive wait staff. That's why we go to Zoetrope more frequently than to any other SF restaurant.
We had dinner here on a visit to SFO- what a great find! The muffuletta was wonderful, the pizza was perfect and the dessert marvelous!
