Was seated in the basement close to kitchen which was very noisy and facing a cluttered backyard although we were early comers and the main dining room was empty. No preference was offered. when inquired, We got different answers from waitress and owner. I used to know the previous owner. He was a gentleman. Apparently things have changed with the new location. The food was good but the atmosphere dampened the taste.
Beautiful room. Excellent food elegantly presented. Classy service. We felt special
Very attractive and intimate space. The food was well prepared and tasty, and was presented nicely. Our server was friendly and informative. I would definitely return. The owner herself thanked us!
This is hands down our favorite restaurant, we dine here everytime we're in town. Their veal ossobucco is the best I've ever had. Staff is extremely friendly & helpful. I'd strongly recommend this restaurant to everyone.
A group of 8 dined here for a birthday celebration. The food was excellent and the service was well paced. Italian is their specialty and the meals are very well prepared. The waitress did a great job and we were not rushed. We received permission to bring our own cake and we were told there would be a $2 service charge per person. It was well worth it and we had a great dinner experience.
Great food, great service. Great selections for fish on Friday. I had a friend in from out of town who thoroughly enjoyed it.
Food was really good service was fantastic!
Usually a very good place but the service was really poor on this occasion.
Two of our 4 meals were very disappointing. Many items shown in menu had to be explained.
Seemed pricey on a lot of items.
Quiet, civilized atmosphere. Really good food, especially the grilled branzino special. Also enjoyed particularly the chocolate gelato. Outstanding service.
overall nice but they were clearly short on help. Water glasses were not refilled often enough, food took a bit long and bread took a while to get to us. It was mentioned that it was in the oven but they were expecting us and it took a while.
The table by the fire place was great. The crab cake was sub-par and the potatoes were dry and almost burnt.
My husband and I enjoyed a meal here with his parents. The food was exceptional. I enjoyed the Penne alla Norma with pan fried eggplant, tomatoes, garlic, basil, and mozzarella. My husband chose the Bracciole with Gnocchi which included organic braised beef rolled with spinach, pine-nuts and Romano cheese simmered in tomato sauce. Both dishes were flavorful, and included home made sauces. The grilled calamari took us by surprise, it was a bit chewy and grainy. We recommend going with mussels and salads for starters - the romance salad and beet salad were freshing and light. Overall it made for an authentic Italian cuisine experience. Our server timed the meal excellently and provided quality service throughout the meal. At the conclusion of our stay we were treated to house made limoncello in the bar. This was a big hit with my in-laws!
The dining room needs a upgrade. Tables crowded together lighting weak.
My wife loved her lame chops my steak was good but not great.
The place was fantastic as always. Our server was phenomenal and the food excellent. Only negative thing I have to say is a put the loud group of friends at the center table. I’m trying to have a nice/romantic conversation with my wife while we enjoyed our food and the 3 couples thought they were in the islands on vacation. Wrapping napkins on their heads, asking the waiter to take their photos, hooting and cheering and talking very loudly to the point where I was ready to give my answers to questions they were asking each other. But I can’t hold the restaurant accountable for the actions of people who obviously thought the rapture came and they were the last customers on earth. Cafe Troia is beautiful and excellent. My wife and I go there every Valentine’s Day.
I've been here several times before. This time a little disappointing. It was for a birthday and I said so on the reservation. But no mention of it by the waiter or anything special done. A little piece of cake would have been appreciated. More importantly, the food was rather ordinary. Veal cutlet and chicken cutlet both a little tough and I remember thinking that I could have made it myself - nothing special. The waiter seemed a bit frazzled even though it wasn't crowded. I asked for a bubbly Moscato and they only had it sold by the bottle. It was okay but I don't think I would go here again for a special occasion. Maybe I need to stick with the pasta.
The cafe is my choice for gathering with colleagues. Excellent food, great choice of specials, and, as always the ambiance is inviting! Our waiter was excellent and very knowledgeable with the menu!
Lisa, the owner, is always there and checks on each table. She had excellent wine selections. The food and wait staff are amazing.
We really enjoyed the 2018 Baltimore County Restaurant Week special menu for lunch on Feb. 2nd. I ordered the lentil soup, orecchiette pasta with spicy sausage, and cannoli. My husband ordered the fresh house salad, perfectly baked salmon with dill sauce and thinly sliced roasted potatoes, and tiramisu. We each had a glass of wine and the whole meal with tax was $50 (before tip), a real bargain! Our waiter Jose was very good, friendly and efficient. The room was comfy as was our table, with a nice semi-couch to sit on. We took home half of our meal and had a nice lunch at home the next day with the leftovers. We plan to come back again soon!
Food and service were great. Our lovely server took great care of us, even though she had a large group to attend to. We’ll be back. It’s always delicious! We left happy.
Met a friend here for Restaurant Week. Food was very good. Service was excellent.
I have reviewed this restaurant previously, but it's worth another because there seems to be a full scale effort towards continual improvement from a traditional past to a more timely and detailed present.
My earlier review crowed about a grilled romaine salad with a creamy gorgonzola, oil and cream dressing. Troia's has doubled down on this signature-quality offering by adding a grilled caesar salad as well. It is fabulous. Warming the letuce on the grill allows the dressing to become more aromatic and it gives the cheeses in both dressings to spread their wings of taste. These salads are not to be missed!
On this night, my companion chose the gorgonzola and I tried the caesar. There was a noticeable lull in our conversation as we both savored those salads. Mains were no less delicious. My friend ordered his perennial favorite, Troia's richly layered lasagne. The layers of pasta, ricotta cheese, meat and sauce and parmesan combined to produce a satisfied smile on his face. I veered away from strictly Italian entrees to have chicken breast filets, pounded but not encrusted in breading, but instead sauted and topped with a mushroom cream and fresh tarragon sauce that was delectable. The thinly-sliced and slightly crusty potatoes were a perfect counterbalance. It was memorable, served nicely and with care and pride.
I saved enough room for affogato, a scoop of vanilla ice cream swimming in expresso. Wow. If you drive by Troia's and see a tent pitched on the sidewalk in front, it's only me, waiting for my next Troia Treat...They could use a little help on some of the wines, but this restaurant continues to impress!
Bread was hard....butter hard. no spices to mix with oil for bread. asked for bread took 10 minutes for it to arrive to table....only received one on plate. Very few wines could be purchase by glass. overall fair....not qualify of service or food it was 5 yrs ago
Went with friends to catch up on life. Our waiter Jose shared the specials of the evening with us, then made excellent recommendations for which kind of wine would go with the meals we ordered. The food was prepared with care, the plates arrived looking delicious, and tasted even better. We enjoyed a wonderful meal, an unhurried pace and were able to relax with our friends.
After reading and hearing some very good reviews, we really waned to like Cafe Troia, but we were fairly disappointed. We started with the arancini. The filling was good, but the outside was very under done and not at all crisp. We each then had the arugula salad which was a bit under seasoned, but easily fixed with some salt and pepper. For the main course, I got the bracciole with gnocchi. The gnocci was very mushy, and the rest of the dish was just ok. My wife got the agnolotti piemontesi, which was the highlight of the dinner. The pasta was well cooked, and the filling and sauce were very good.
On the positive side, the service was excellent. The staff was friendly and attentive. The wine was also very good.
It is possible that they had an off night since we have heard from a number of people that Cafe Troia is very good, so we may give it another shot.
Lisa and the Team at Cafe Troia did super job making our dinner very enjoyable. The dinners (duck and filet) were delicious, along with the dessert and wine. Definitely on my list of places to go back to.....Well done...
Four of us had dinner at Cafe Troia and we enjoyed the experience. The food was very good, and it was reasonably priced. Our waiter was knowledgeable, and he had a good sense of humor, too. The setting was nicely lit with dimmed lights, and we could have a conversation without shouting.
My husband and I went for our anniversary based on reviews I had read. The restaurant ambiance is lovely and the menu is very impressive. We shared two appetizers of which the grilled calamari was outstanding. We then each had a pasta (homemade) dish, both of which were delicious. We also enjoyed our drinks. They were very generous and sent dessert over on the house for our anniversary. Our only complaint was, although our server was very nice, service was extremely and unnecessarily slow. If we go back, it will be for the great food, not the service!
Had the grilled salmon sandwich. Highly recommend it. Excellent and friendly service.
This year I selected Cafe Troia for our company Christmas luncheon. I could not have been more pleased. Food was wonderful, service was attentive and friendly but not intrusive. Don’t miss great coffee selection and desserts were top notch!!
We topped it off by being able to make “coats for kids donations” right there!!! Happy Holidays to all.
Thanks Cafe Troia team!
The food was delicious, but the service was off. I took over 20 minutes to bring additional rolls, and another 20 for butter. All the help was polite and kind.
Very professional and friendly staff...accommodating to baby in high chair..great ambiance...EXCELLENT food!!!
The food was very, very good. Waiter was friendly and attentive. The noise level was totally unacceptable. We expect a busy restaurant to be somewhat noisy on a Saturday evening. However, on this occasion, a party of six was seated in the middle of the dining area. They were beyond loud...they were obnoxiously loud. Seemed to have had too much alcohol. And...their waiter made matters worse by yelling and joining in. In fact, after they paid their bill, he sat down with them and joined in the bad behavior. Other waiters, including ours, just rolled their eyes and seemed to be embarrassed. My wife started to attempt to say something to them, but they were far too gone. The restaurant staff should have handled the situation better. Ruined an otherwise very good evening.
We've been to Cafe Troia a few times and had a great experience each visit. I particularly like that many of the meals come in two sizes, and I was able to get one of my favorites (a pasta dish) as an appetizer while trying something new as my entree.
I did feel that our server had a tendency to disappear between courses, though the restaurant did grow much busier as we were there. While we were eating our main meal, however, she was there frequently, filling our water glasses and making sure our drink orders remained filled.
I suggest leaving room for dessert! Cafe Troia has some very nice desserts and, unlike a lot of restaurants, they make them a nice size for one person. They aren't small by any definition, but you don't feel like you have to share a dessert just to finish it. I think they have a nice mix, too, so everyone can find something they like.
Not impressed. Espresso rubbed steak was bitter, and although ordered rare was overcooked; Caesar salad was tiny and had practically no dressing that would have earned that name, and the croutons from a bag were dry and tasteless as sawdust; seafood pasta that was described as having a garlic/anchovy sauce was so timid of flavor, I should have asked for double the sauce. Mind you, I’m no seasoning fanatic, but the food here seemed like Italian-lite. Ambiance and service was nice tho.
In a word, disappointing. The food was adequate and the service only fair fr a price you would find at a better restaurant.
So good! We wanted a quiet special dinner and were so glad we picked Cafe Troia. From the rolls, to soup, salad, clam sauce, bolognese, dessert...all were fabulous. We were very satisfied and look forward to returning. Yummmmm!
I requested a good table and specified on open table I was bringing an out of town friend. Recd a crappy table though booths were open, waiter was completely distracted. No pepper fresh grated or
Cheese fresh grated. Bitter olive oil and stale bread. My cocktail was lovely, my wine was good as was my risotto. A very noisy foursome was obnoxious and distracting. I lost my necklace and returned to pu which I appreciated but overall, to bring a guest....I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED since my last visit.
Cafe Troia has been a long-standing favorite, since we moved to the Baltimore area in the mid 1980's. Usually a solid choice for good Italian food. But this past Friday night was odd: no one picked up the phone at 7pm-ish (on a Friday night!) so I had to leave a voicemail that we would be 15 minutes late, then there was no one at the hostess stand for 5+ minutes when we arrive at 8pm, the waitress immediately wanted our appetizer order and had to be prompted about taking drink orders, bread did not come until the entrees, and then a birthday party at a nearby table was so loud we couldn't have a conversation. Thankfully the loud party left after a while and the rest of our dinner was ok. But it all felt a little off, for a place that for a long time was solid and reliable.
Our fourth visit. As we have come to expect it was great.
