Cafe Stella Ratings and Reviews
We made a reservation, but when we got there they didn't have a table, and told us it would be a 20 min wait. Why make a reservation if you are going to have to wait 20 min? Also, the hostess was incredibly rude, and not apologetic at all. We ended up leaving because the experience was so bad.
Cafe Stella is a bit of France right at Sunset Junction. The frisee salad is one of the best I've had, terrific, well-curated, well-priced wine list. The only disappointment was the rack of lamb. The lamb was bland, like they are breeding all the wonderful lamb taste - some call it 'gamey' whatever - out of the meat. But Cafe Stella is a wonderful French Bistro!
This was our first visit. The hostess was super nice because I made reservation for five
and arrived with a party of seven, and the place was booked. We had to wait a little,
but she found us a table. The food was really good and the place is great. We had wonderful dinner.
A very nice Silver Lake restaurant. I had lamb rack. My wife had steak frite. Both were perfectly cooked to order, beautifully presented, with professional service. The atmosphere on the covered patio is very nice. The place has a sophisticated feel. Our experience was good.
We were very disappointed in the food, service, and ambiance. The host is rude and unwelcoming. Why have a host who is unable to do the job as host?? The menu is terribly overpriced for less than mediocre dishes. I read in the Yelp reviews that the chef has changed hands and hence the likely reason for less quality in preparation. Very unfortunate as this was such a nice place at one time.
I really don't want to bash this restaurant, but there are some things that should be addressed that could make Stella's a 5 star rated restaurant. No. 1, tell the little girls that serve that you need to stop chatting with your other servers and pay attention to the guest. We received our bread basket, but no plates. Had to get the attention of our server to get plates. Plates, but no butter knives. Again, find server to get knives. The food was mostly very good, vegetables and duck outstanding. Oyster, steak tartare, and escargot boring. Lastly, it took so long to get out dessert, key lime pie and mousse, that we left without it. These things are already made. Pretty disappointed. Hope you get your act together.
All good. Only quibble was that there was a side that we ordered that wasn't delivered. Server apologized that he had forgotten to put the order in to the kitchen and assured me that he would not charge for his oversight. I didn't check the bill until after the charges went though. Sure enough, the charge was included in our bill.
Might have been an honest mistake in billing but, considering that he couldn't remember to put our order in correctly, perhaps he could have checked and insured that we weren't going to be charged after his mistake.
Very disappointed with the service! We weren't treated like locals but instead some outside strangers. The waiter was rude and totally forgot (or chose not to) bring us a bucket of ice after ordering a nice bottle or Rosé. Ambiance is great but service needs work!
Restaurant was a tremendous disappointment. Food was tasty but not special in any way. The pricing was equivalent to the Gotham in NYC where I dine at least once a week, yet the food and service were nowhere near as good. Service was embarrassingly poor. Food came out at different times. The preparation and display were very ordinary. I dig California relaxed, but that is not an excuse for an unprepared. The service was unprofessional. Wine list was appropriate and diverse. Presentation ordinary and food pricing a full 40% above what would have been warranted for distinctiveness of the dishes, ambience and quality.
At 60-65% of existing prices, this would be a fine restaurant. I was extremely disappointed.
The ambience can't be beat, but the food was incredibly mediocre this visit - the steak overcooked, escargot lacking any flavor, artichoke grossly undercooked. The service was also spotty; we sat for a good 15 minutes before anyone even said hello; tables that had been seated after us had their drinks and had placed orders before anyone noticed us. After our appetizer the waiter asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu...we hadn't even gotten our mains. It seems, based on other reviews, that service is something Cafe Stella management really need to commit to working on, but will they? It really is their biggest issue, and the prices certainly demand a higher level of customer service and consistency with food. Just overall a very bad experience.
After reading reviews and a few write ups on Cafe Stella, I was really looking forward to trying this place. Our server was great. Friendly, knew the menu, did not hover but was always attentive. The food was good, albeit a tad rich. The menu is extensive but not overwhelming. The prices were not bad either. The issue I had is with the hostess. Upon entering, the hostess simply looked up at me. No "Welcome" no "may I help you". Just looked at me. I told her my name and I had made a reservation. Again, ZERO acknowledgement. I do not expect a red carpet to be rolled out but a simple acknowledgement is required. She then grabbed two menus and proceeded to walk away from us. No "right this way" or "follow me". Just walked away carrying two menus. Since it was not my first time dining out, I figured she was showing us to our table. She put the menus down and walked away. I was shocked. I watched as she walked away seeing if she would look back, but she did not. It was appalling and if I did not have a show to see that evening (Friday night and did not want to try to find another place to eat), I would have spoken to a manager and then left. This hostess was either very poorly trained, hated her job, didn't think I was worth her time, or a combination of all these. Her service was appalling.
We always have a lovely time at Stella. Sadly this time, the steaks weren't cooked as well or as true to temperature as they normally are. Also we tried the artichoke for something different and sadly it was a disappointment. The wine was lovely as was the service and dessert.
