Almost really good, but some problems every step of the way: Even with a reservation, had to sit in small bar room (not the main Bar Stella space), which was dark and noisy, compared to the pleasant, cheery, open feeling in the main outdoor area. The food was slow to appear, and even the order taking was pretty slow in coming. Our appetizers, once we finally got to order them, were good enough, though the olives were nothing special considering their price. Moving on to main courses: we ordered pretty simple stuff: two steak frites, one steak au louvre, one pasta dish. All steak dishes were ordered medium; one was medium (pink and juicy), one was rare (raw in many places); one was med-well (not very pink, mostly overcooked). More important: it took FOREVER for our food to arrive. When we asked if it was ever going to come, they were obviously embarrassed and scurried about and the food came. Makes me think they forgot to place the order in the first place. They gave us dessert to make up for this, and the dessert was quite wonderful, so there's that. But still: with two bottles of wine for four people, our meal came to $600 before tip, for lousy service and just OK food. A bit disappointing.
The hostess was genuinely friendly as well as our server. The portions were a perfect size and delicious. I would only suggest adding Profiterole’s to the menu.
Super cute, super delicious.
Overpriced, but excellent drinks and nice ambience make up for it.
Super cozy spot for a romantic or intimate dinner. Food, location, ambiance, and service were spectacular. Noise level is a bit much though
My favorite restaurant in LA for the last 10 years...and it's getting better
Perfect food, beautiful service!
Food is outstanding. Service can be slow at times but the servers are friendly!
Amazing and truly authentic French dinner. Highly recommend!
We were there for over THREE HOURS. Took forever for literally everything. The waiter was super nice and comped a desert. Was pretty pricey for the insanely long wait.
My one minor suggestion might be some more light (not bright) during the dinner hours.
Everything was fantastic. The food was amazing and the atmosphere was very good. Perfect for any date. Things are very expensive however, so don't bother going if you aren't wanting to spend much money.
Excellent food, ambiance and service.
I used to love this place. The steak used to be so good. Not anymore! It was $40 and mostly gristle and fat :/ yuck! I will not be back to eat unless something changes. I still love the ambiance and the service is good, but it seems like they are buying cheaper meat and charging more. No bueno.
Always enjoy our time at Cafe Stella - great ambiance, service, food, crowd.
Service was slow and inattentive but the food was great
The hostess was the most lovely person I have ever encountered. The food was perfect, just what we wanted for dinner.
Didn’t get one of the appetizers we ordered. The entrees were ridiculously small (literally 3 tiny potatoes with a little amount of fish) and expensive. I left hungry.
Menu changes were a disappointment. The Sole lacked flavor and was dry. Disappointing.
Cafe Stella is a great find! My fiance and I went there for dinner on a Saturday night before a fancy dress party. The ambiance was cozy and romantic. The service was attentive without being intrusive. Best of all the food was delicious. We ordered the salmon tartare for an appetizer. It was a perfect balance of flavor and texture. My fiance had the lamb and I had the steak frites. Both were cooked as ordered and we had no leftovers! The wine recommendations paired perfectly with both of our meals. We visited the bar afterwards for a different vibe. It was chic without being pretentious. We'll definitely return when we find ourselves in the LA area again.
Great as always
This is a great place for a romantic dinner or casual Sunday brunch. Ambiance reminiscent of Paris bistros. My wife and I have dined there off and on for many years, but the new chef in the kitchen has really taken the quality up several notches. We look forward to returning often.
I made a reservation for my birthday dinner on Saturday March 9 for 8:30 PM. I called twice to confirm the reservation - and was twice told I as all set.
We waited 30 minutes when we arrived, on time, for hostess to even acknowledge we'd been waiting for a while. She as rude, abrupt and inept. She called on the manager to solve the problem - shockingly, the manager was even ruder. Dismissing my reservation by saying "people are relaxing and have their deserts - chill".
40 minutes after our reservation time of 8:30 PM we left. I told the manager the hostess "sucks" - because she truly did - and was summarily dismissed from the restaurant.
They were able to accommodate our food restrictions, which was appreciated and the service was pretty good but not overly warm. I didn't feel that the value was very good for what we paid - our meal came to about $120 for a plain piece of fish, a side of french fries, a side of green beans, 2 sorbets and 2 glasses of wine. Perhaps if someone had no dietary restrictions, the value might be better but we left hungry. The cocktail bar attached to Cafe Stella is great - we went there for cocktails after our meal and the decor was so beautiful.
Love the fish & vegetable dishes! Occasionally get filet mignon which is also great. Seems the salads could be more interesting. Service is typically friendly & professional. Met with a French friend here from out of town the other day.. it got her seal of approval.
Sole was very bland
For $44 should have more vegetables and value
Check out Le Petite Cafe in Santa Monica.
Amazing food...at great value
I come to Cafe Stella for your ambience
I don’t come often because you are expensive
and your food’s average. Although I live in east
Hollywood, I drive to Santa Monica to Le Petite Cafe because their sand dabs are the best in LA for
Overall we had not a nice time, we had a reservation and although we had to wait for almost 45 hours.
The service was completely stressed and not polite, our food came separately s may friends and I could not eat at the same time.
Completely overhyped and not worth to go....
Stella has great ambiance and really yummy food, but the prices are pretty steep. The fries were $14! For a pretty small portion, and a glass of wine will run you at least $15. It's the perfect spot for a date or a ladies night...if you're willing to splurge.
Valentine’s Day was great!
Great food snd service, just a little cold by the doors that night.
Always great food & wine. Always a fun time.
Always comically slow, yet incredibly good service which I guess is just authentically French?
Will always go back
Very good food but our waiter was also bartending and the service lacked. Too loud, drafty, and very high priced.
For the prices, the food was deeply disappointing. $44 for a 1/2 chicken that was soggy, served with undercooked vegetables and generally uninspired was a deep disappointment. When our dissatisfaction was noted, we got an "oh, sorry you feel that way" but no effort was made to improve our experience.
In broad strokes, Stella is in a great location with cool vibe - but with a built-in clientele due to locationm there is little pressure to raise the quality of the food to align with what they are able to charge.
Prices gone too high. Usd44 for chicken. FFS
Cafe Stella favors a standard French bistro menu, impeccably prepared. A wonderful green salad with butter leaf lettuce, simple but full of its own flavor, excellent steak-frites and fish dishes, including the truite aux amandes, and an excellent presentation of duck confit. Mostly simple dishes of a classic kind, but largely perfect. The wine list is excellent and the sommelier really know her stuff. My only complaint was that the duck confit was a little overdone, or done in too hot an oven, too fast, and was therefore a bit dry.
We waited for at least an hour if not more for our main course to arrive with no explanation. I also had the trout which was totally bland and served with just green beans and no sauce or condiments. A disappointing attempt at French food.
Got there early. They turned the music down so we could have an intimate/actual conversation. Our waiter was fun and super attentive yet not intrusive. As usual, ordered our favorites which are consistently excellent.
It was a perfect NYE
Best moules frites ever!! I hope they never change the recipe.
I arrived with a friend who was 6'4" tall and we were taken to a tiny corner two-top, even though there were plenty of tables available. When it was clear that he could not fold himself into that corner, we were then seated next to a very loud table of six. We left after an hour - and still there were empty tables available which would have been far more comfortable and quieter. Why aggravate regular customers? I will think twice about coming back and I've been a regular for years.
