About Cafe Society
Celebrating 30 plus years in business, Michel Leny first opened Café Society in 1987! He was inspired by his father, Maurice Leny, a Chef at Maxim's in Paris. October 2007 welcomed new owner, Chef Cullen Kent, graduate of Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. Cullen and Michel continue the tradition of International cuisine emphasizing Belgian influences and classic French food.
Located in the heart of the beautiful Evergreen Historic District in Midtown Memphis, Café Society features innovative preparations of fresh seafood, veal, lamb and beef along with an extensive wine list for your dining pleasure. With its casual dining and bistro atmosphere, Café Society is affectionately known to many Memphians as simply "Café" and continues to be a favorite of many of its midtown neighbors.

Cafe Society Ratings and Reviews
This quoet little restaurant is a fan favorite for my wife and I. Its a quiet, clean romantic atmosphere. If there were one thing I would change...its the chairs. They don't seem to fit the decor of the restaurant, but...in the grand scheme of things the chairs get a pass. :-)
Restaurant is plain with little ambiance. Service was slow and scarce. Our order was forgotten in the kitchen, yet there were only three or four other tables in the restaurant. Drink refills were forgotten. Our server offered to comp us a round of drinks, then brought us a check for full price. The food was very overpriced for the quality and flavor. There are better restaurants in Memphis.
We were there on Christmas Eve after a church service and visit to The Peabofy Hotel so we were late diners. The service was fine, with no effort to rush our party, and taking every effort to provide us with menu information and to check to see that we were pleased. The owner and his wife both circulated among guests, thanking us for our patronage. It was a lovely dinner out and a very homey, warm and comfortable ambiance. This compares very favorably with French restaurants in D.C. where we live. A joy to find in Memphis!
Food was excellent. Had the roasted oysters and duck for apps and the steak and salmon were great. We all shared. The smoke from the bar was noticeable and may keep us from going back. The atmosphere (old house) was OK, but could use some updating. Our table was right by check in and not ideal. Overall really good. Service was friendly and helpful.
We stopped there before going to the Orpheum. When we arrived there was no one at the front and we walked around and said “is there anyone here?” Finally someone came and we went to our table. Service was slow and the food was average. We were disappointed as we have been there many times and thought the food was very good. People kept coming in and there was no one to great them. When our waitress came we told her people were standing and waiting for someone to help them. Disappointed.
Our food was good, service not quite what we were used to but sufficient. This is our third time. There was a table of 6 next to us that was UNBELIEVABLY loud! It was like sitting in a McDonald’s. We were very disappointed as it was a special occasion for us, we cldnt even have a conversation. It made the overall experience very unsavory. Hope this helps in the future. Thanks.
Service was not as usual. Very surprised. Not the usual. Served another bourbon when Makers was ordered and were not told. Shame. This was not the Cafe Society that I was used too. Food was rich as usual and 4 of the 6 entree’s were fabulous as expected. The other 2 were ok. Fish special is always my go to and tonight not so much.
First time to visit Cafe Society, nice midtown French restaurant. We started with bacon wrapped shrimp, and a cesar salad. Both items were very good. Bread good but not French. I had the Filet, and my wife had the Salmon. Both items were pretty and delicious. Service was excellent.
I've been going to Cafe Society since the first week they opened. It has never disappointed! It is always one of my first choices for an excellent meal in a lovely setting where you can easily enjoy the company of family and good friends. As a fan of alfresco dining, when the weather is nice, having dinner out on their patio adds yet another dimension of sheer pleasure. What more needs to be said?
Cafe Society is in a lovely space with great ambiance. However, our evening came with pros and cons. We waited for more than 10 minutes at the host stand wondering if we were actually even at the host stand before stepping into the bar side to make sure we were in the right place. There were only a couple tables of people but we didn't see staff on the dining side until inquiring at the bar. We were promptly seated and our server was nice, polite, but seemed a little off. As a couple more tables filled, it seemed as though they were understaffed.
The charcuterie plate was less than ideal with the meats and cheeses being nearly unbearably salty--perhaps a different selection would be more palatable. Though I needed to ask for a cocktail menu, our drinks were fantastic. We sort of wished we'd sat at the bar, to be honest.
The meat and vegetables were all delicious and cooked as desired.
The bread pudding could use improvement.
All in all, though, it was a nice little neighborhood spot for dinner.
I'm certain we'll be visiting again.
Cafe Society was beyond amazing. It was our 2 year anniversary and we just wanted a quiet and intimate dinner (hard to get with kids at home!). The wait staff was attentive, the wine list extensive, the food amazing, and we got many recommendations from our waitress that really paid off. The charcuterie platter was so good and she was able to tell me the name of everything on it (You would be surprised at how many cannot). I recommend the risotto which was perfectly cooked, and the duck which was the best I have ever had. As someone who lived in France I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. We will be back again very soon!
Cafe Society has been a special place in midtown for many years.
It is tucked just off Poplar on Evergreen, and has a neighborhood feel.
I loved the salmon with roasted potatoes and sweet peas, and my husband really enjoyed the chicken with potatoes.
It is a quiet restaurant, which is great for a business lunch, or dinner.
There are also tables outside on Evergreen which is great when the weather is nice.
It is a restaurant that we go to frequently because of the atmosphere and the consistent quality of our meal.
Its a nice place , friendly, clean cozy, great staff. The prices are ok, but most of the food lacked the kind of of flavor and flare you would expect of FRENCH. It was good food , just I expected more. The dessert was killer. I don't say don't go I just say its not the greatest French find.
