This restaurant is permanently closed. Permanently Closed -

Café Rouge has been serving up delicious dishes, tasty cocktails and dessert since 1996. Try Café Rouge's sautéed trout, oysters on the half shell or order the Grilled Rouge hamburger. Complete your meal with a glass of wine and dessert after dinner, like the toasted almond and orange cake. Café Rouge is much more than a restaurant. It is also a full-service butcher shop. Best cassoulet and fries ever. Great raw bar. Wonderful charceuterie. I am really going to miss Cafe Rouge. It's been my go to for many years. I'll looking out to see if the owner or chef show up with a new venture in the future.

Cafe Rouge closing is a painful. In a year where we get Trump and his alt-right henchmen we also have to lose a go-to comfort spot with superb cocktails, seafood, charcuterie and steak?? And I can just walk home. Ouch.

At the evening that was next to the closing of the restaurant, we had a good meal, the service was a bit off, and the noise level was very energetic. It seemed that many patrons came to say their goodbyes to a Berkeley long active restaurant. While I would have recommended it, there will no longer be such a restaurant to recommend. We wish the owners and their staff a Happy New Year, and send good wishes for their future endeavors.

This was a very good place to have brunch with a friend on Christmas Eve. Although I've been here before and enjoyed my entree, in this case it was too heavy handed with salt and it would have been better if the chef didn't try to do so much with a simple preparation

The power went out but we were promised one of our appetizers. However the waiter then told us that it had been given to another table. We were starving and wanted to soak up some of the very expensive alcohol so we asked for bread. Nope, no bread was available in a French restaurant. Our bill came to $50 for 3 drinks (before tip!!!) and we left still ravenous. It was a very disappointing experience.

it was awful. the drink at 12.00 was terrible; the noise level was unbearable and the food was mediocre at best. have gone there many times and this was to be our homage and goodbye to the closing restaurant and believe me, I would not ever return again with the food and drink so bad; the two of guys shared and the bill was $120.00 minus tip. the fillet cocktail had no gin in it and was a mess at 12.00. her cocktail was fair; the food was presented sloppily and even our nabobs on right said they are glad they are closing and it is time for new blood... Sorry rouge; but you are truly finished

Sadly, Cafe Rouge was down to its last days, and this was our good-bye luncheon. Really will miss this place, and from the looks of the crowd during our weekday late lunch, so will many other people.

this place is a loud and active bistro with good enough food. Its wine list could be improved and it could stay open later. But it is friendly and comfortable.

So sorry to hear Cafe Rouge is closing. It has been my regular place for years now, and there is no substitute for quality of food, value, atmosphere, and location. I have never been anything but happy. The meat is great. The deserts have been original and fine. The soups, the salads, the hot pain épais - everything, really. I don't know what can replace it, really! Marsha, don't go! But if you do, you leave only good memories! Thank you!

Impressive wine list, cocktails, beers. Menu ranged from oysters to burgers. The charcuterie plank was good; the seared ahi tuna Napa cabbage salad was very good; the flourless chocolate walnut cookies were wonderful.
Service was a bit chaotic because "the bar was backed up" (very busy!). Obviously a popular casual bar scene and with it's own menu.

The host was extremely rude. He first tried to tell my partner the wait was an hour. But I found reservations on for 15 minutes away I walked in (him not having seen me during the discussion with my partner ) and he was borderline rude with me. When my partner walked in moments laters with her twin six year olds in tow, he reverted to an almost hostile demeanor and promptly seated is in the balcony at the very rear table. I've been seated there at least four other times with my children and it's the least desirable table in the restaurant . It's very clear the establishment sears families with younger children at this table, even if they are well-behaved, which our are. We are longtime residents of Berkeley and intend to let our family and friends know about this very disturbing policy .

The Ahi Tuna Salad had quite a bit of fish on the side of a bed of very nice chopped Napa cabbage salad. My friend had the clam chowder, which was very tasty but only had 3 small clams in it. I Love the Affogato for dessert!

I am someone who has been to Cafe Rouge numerous times...Oh my, what a disappointment. Service: 20 minutes between being seated and the 1st visit from our waiter. Another 25 minutes before the first food arrived. BTW brunch menu only on Sat. & Sun. I ordered "breakfast" 2 poached eggs, toast, sausage & potatoes. When the food arrive the toast was stone cold. I asked for jam and was told "we don't have any jam" What?!!! Never mind this establishment is literally next door to the gourmet Pasta Shop grocery store. Hubby ordered a burger with blue cheese. When it arrive there was one measly little onion ring on the burger patty, 1/4 tsp, if that of blue cheese (a $2 add-on) a single, card-size, tissue-thin piece of translucent lettuce. When he asked for a tomato he was told "we don't have any tomatoes ?!! What, no tomato? Mind you, this burger is an $18.50 burger and you don't have a single slice of tomato? Seriously I am so done with this restaurant. The food has been consistently going downhill for some time. I kept hoping things would change because I love the atmosphere and location. Get it together Cafe Rouge. Uncomplicated food shouldn't be this difficult.

We have liked Cafe Rouge in the past. But our last visit was sub-par. The greeter was brusque, the noise levels were high, and the food was nothing special. I had the cassoulet, a duck confit which was prepared in a pan with potatoes and grains. Not worth $27 or so. It all tasted mealy and uniform. The wine was good but pricey.

Hurts me to say this, but Cafe Rouge just is not what it used to be. We used to love this place, but in the last few years it has changed. Service has steadily become worse and very uncharismatic, food is lackluster, wait times are long, especially when there is almost no one there.

Salad was undressed, sandwhich had half a container of blue cheese in it, hot dog wasn't bad. Charcuterie was meh, and for a meat shop, come on...

Never going back, won't ever recommend.

Surpassed my expectations. My son's burger was medium-rare which is hard to find these days. The pomme-frites and truffle pomme-frites were sensational. We fought over the last fry. The spit-roasted chicken was delicious and the polenta was perfect. I loved the freshness of my oysters and the salad was perfect. My husband very much enjoyed his cassoulet. The wine/sparkling wine/beer list complemented our selections. The Hazelnut chocolate torte with the Buttermilk sherbet was perfect. The pastry chef recalled the fun of black bottom cupcakes in a high-end foodie presentation. It was a wonderful celebration. We cannot thank you enough!

We had the beef brisket sandwich for lunch which was absolutely amazing. Great bread, very tender beef brisket, and not too much barbecue sauce. Hooray. And they recommended a San Francisco Porter to go with the sandwich which was a great match. And we looked out the window and watched people. What a nice enjoyable lunch.

Have been many times, but this time was disappointing. Their usually excellent steaks were somehow tough, our waiter disappeared for long stretches of time, and the sound level was super loud because they were showing a baseball game on the TV behind the bar. We wanted to order more wine but gave up after being left for too long. Won't give up on Cafe Rouge because it's always been really good before, guess this was an off night.

As always, an excellent place. Great for locally sourced products, particularly meat dishes (sorry vegans....). Their bavette steak and french fries (get the truffle fries) is always fantastic. Very nice wait staff -- checked that my steak was cooked properly, and gladly took it back because it was a tad overdone. This is a reliable high quality lunch and dinner option in the Berkeley 4th St. shopping area. Highly recommended!

We were there for brunch (4 people) and each of us had something different. The food was okay but we were expecting exceptional. My seared tuna salad was lightly browned, not seared and the inside was over-cooked, not rare. The salad was mostly cabbage and it was dressed in a vinaigrette was too low in oil and very vinegary. The Bloody Mary I ordered for $10 wasn't particularly tasty and the vodka was not perceptible. Overall, a disappointment.

Steak was overcooked, fries over fried and stale, waiters completely forgot to ask if we wanted anything such as another drink. Had to ask for bread. Difficult to get waiter to table. Restaurant noise was so bad we could not enjoy conversation. Desert was poor quality and lacking in any technical culinary appeal. Overall, such bad management of taste, menu choices, and service, timing that I would vote a zero for this cafe were it not for the quality of the meats. This place has zero confidence in itself and its reflected in the clueless wait staff. Don't go for the food. Go for the drink and raw bar or brunch because that would be hard to screw up the way they messed up my friends birthday dinner.
Lack of choices limited vegetarian friends who like fish but only had single choice of rock cod. Who likes rock cod, anyway??
