Cafe Provencal - Williamsburg
Mixed reviews. An elegant setting. Service wonderful. Vegetables undercooked . Specifically asked for nothing spicey and risotto quite spicey. Vegetables provided as a substitute but took quite awhile. Lamb excellent. Steak more done than requested. Desert lacklustre.
Cafe Provencal is always a wonderful, unique experience. Food was superb; service couldn’t have been better. Craig was a wonderful server, as he has been for us each time in the past. We are from out of town, but always have dinner at Cafe Provençal when we come to Williamsburg.
Cafe Provençal was a perfect end to a busy afternoon. Calm and comfortable surroundings and view, beautifully executed (if not innovative) dishes. Best of all, a chance to try Williamsburg Winery’s great wines at essentially retail bottle prices. Great food, wine, atmosphere, service and value.
Fantastic really good and recommend to everyone who like great wine
The ambiance was very quaint and relaxing. Our waiter was excellent— very attentive and knowledgeable. The cheese and charcuterie tray was amazing. My diver scallops were perfect and my wife’s filet mignon was as good as it gets. Thanks for making my birthday exceptional.
Super belated anniversary. Our waitress was sweet as can be & gave us complimentary coffee & a glass of wine before dinner as we were waiting for the restaurant to open & then an anniversary dessert in the house. By far the best scallops we’ve ever had ANYWHERE & lamb chops were very good as well. It was a very quiet place to have dinner & would def go back.
The setting of the cafe, in the Williamsburg Winery is quaint and refreshing, a beautiful place to have a romantic dinner. My husband and I started our weekend getaway there with dinner, and the food, setting, and service was wonderful. I loved the lamb and scallops, but my favorite was the seared tuna salad we had first. Our waiter was super friendly, fast, and very attentive to our needs. I can’t remember his name but it may have been Blaire. Anyway we both highly recommend Cafe Provençal and we will be back!
The experience was fantastic. One of the best dinners I have ever had. Amber our server was the most pleasant and helpful waitress we have ever had. She was very cheerful and welcoming. My wife has a dairy allergy and Amber and the Chef changed the sauces to accommodate her needs. Fantastic restaurant we will visit again. Highly recommend the Cafe Provençal to anyone visiting or living in Williamsburg.
Hands down the best meal I’ve had in a very long time. Excellent service excellent atmosphere. Was completely blown away. Will most certainly go back. Worth every penny.
Chef David McClure is absolutely brilliant, a master of his craft. The plate is his canvas on which he creates stunning works of art. His feast for the eyes is also a feast for the palate, with each presentation perfectly seasoned and balanced—much like a fine wine. Such are the talents of this chef that he has brought recognition to the Williamsburg Winery’s Café Provencal, which is now in contention for USA Today’s 10 Best Winery Restaurant, 2019.
Had hoped to be "wowed" but guess my expectations were too high.
Fresh salad greens and presentation of food lovely. Thought the profiteroles excellent.
Cafe Provencal is our special occasion favorite restaurant in Williamsburg. It never fails to meet our highest expectations. The food is beautifully prepared and presented; the menu always has something new to try. We will be back!
The wait staff was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. They add to the dining pleasure. The food presentation was a true work of art. The taste was fantastic. The total dining experience far exceeded our expectations.
The food was succulent. The scallops with pork belly, purple rice and garden vegetables is the best in Virginia.
The filet was tender, cook to perfection (medium rear). Amber offered outstanding service. She knew the menu very well. Her recommendations won us over. Can't wait to go back!
If you are ever in Williamsburg this is a must do for diner.
Romantic & European with a world-class chef. The setting and ambiance are identical to a favorite hotel/restaurant in a hill town near Turin, Italy. The food is even better, especially the chef’s creativity weaving-in local ingredients for world-class flavors and presentation. Very knowledgeable and pleasant server provided a perfect wine pairing. Who knew Virginia had grapes from French vine stock? Oh wait, Wine Enthusiast did….
Some food relied on sauce for flavor such as swordfish and blood orange dessert.
Overall nice place to go because of the great service and small attractive location.
Great restaurant! Food is absolutely amazing. Love the feel of the place at lovely winery. Speaking of which they have a great selection of Williamsburg Winery Wine. Great fancy get away dinner. Everyone is super friendly.
Great anniversary dinner date with my husband. The meal, ambiance, and service were all spectacular.
That says it all.
Amazing food, beautiful location and wonderful servers!
This was perfect for a near by high and fine dinning experience. Along with the beautiful location and convenience of the Williamsburg winery it was perfect. The service was great the food delicious
We love this little place! We tend to go for occasions like birthdays and anniversaries. The food is excellent. Quiet and intimate setting.
Always something new and fresh on the menu.Great presentation in a genteel setting.I look forward to dining there every time that I am in the Williamsburg area.
Four stars is probablyright for cafe provencal. The charm of the location and the building housing the restaurant is probably 4 1/2 stars- French provincial and warm. Also right up there was the service which was warm, knowledgeable and helpful- just the right degree of attentive. We had the charcuterie which was the best I've had- meats, cheeses fruits all just the perfct appetizer- and the waitress described each item with some particularity. Unfortunately, the swordfish was a little dry. My wife's pork was outstanding. Excellent chocolate egg desert. A martini should be lightly chilled- mine wasn't. The main course was served with ample fine breads. The menu was just a little pricey,
Hard to find enough good things to say. Food, wine, ambience, service (Greg?) were all absolutely world class. We will be back asap!
Wonderful birthday celebration! Delicious innovative food.
We had dinner at Cafe Provencal for our anniversary this past Saturday. We had heard wonderful things and we're anticipating a wonderful, relaxing meal without our spunky four year old son. The meal started off okay, although I was a little miffed that the waiter spilled red wine all over the table and my wine and water glass and did not even clean it up, just tossed a napkin over it. I had to wipe the area and my glasses off so I didn't get wine I. My clothes, while he rushed off, barely mumbling an apology. Once he took our order and brought our appetizer, we didn't see our waiter again. Another gentleman brought the main course. We needed salt and pepper, and could not even get our waiter to look our way. He instead was chatting with a couple across from us and even had a glass of their wine and proceeded to have a half hour conversation about wine with them, while totally ignoring us. I had to flag down another waiter to get our check, as we were too annoyed at this point to order dessert. I hope and am certain this is not the norm, but even wrote a review on my comment card, which was given to the manager, and have heard nothing from anyone at the restaurant. Very disappointing...
Overall it is the best restaurant in Williamburg! Quiet, intimate, and the food is DC, London, and NYC CALIBRE
Truly fabulous. We've been here a number of times and are consistently impressed. Food is artful without being overdone. It's obvious that its been prepared with care and respect for ingredients. Noise level has varied on the occasions we've dined here- it's a small room, so if it's full it's quite noisy, but on slower evenings it's quite peaceful. Service is consistently great.
ps, not sure about some of the other recent reviews. Steak with potatoes, swiss chard and a sauce isn't "overly complicated," and someone complained about "no french sauces," but current menu has demi glace, beurre blanc, date au jus, sabayon, romesco and creme anglaise?
Tough to find, directions from gps were incorrect and signage to the winery are different. After driving around for awhile we finally got to the parking lot. Signage is poor and eventually a clerk showed up to the hotel desk or we would still be looking for the restaurant.
We were greeted warmly in the cafe but beyond that the evening was ordinary. Not many other guests were there and those were loud making part of dinner comical and then annoying. The menu is small and over ambitious with many flavors and ingredients combined in each offering. They would be better served to concentrate on the individual ingredient rather than a tapestry of enhancements.
Our server disappeared at the end of the meal leaving the bartender to collect the check. A bit wierd. With numerous offerings in the area, these folks should be on their game and neither of us thought it to be a special evening or that the place was putting in the effort expected considering the trappings and the prices.
I'm afraid I have so many favorites in Williamsburg that this will be a one night stand.
Service was excellent but the food was not what we expected for the high prices. We were the only ones at the restaurant, so no noise issues. We have eaten all over France but this meal missed the mark with us. What happened to the wonderful French sauces? The beef and chicken meals did not have any sauces on them. If we had added an appetizer or salad to each meal it would have been over $60.00 each. The bill for two dinners and two glasses of wine was over $100.00 for us, which is pretty pricey for a weeknight. We don’t mind paying more for excellent food but this was disappointing. The wine by the glass was limited and a glass of Williamsburg wine was the same cost of a bottle at the winery. We thought this restaurant was part of the Williamsburg Winery that we are club members of. Maybe it was an off night for them but don’t think we will return.
Great high end food. All cooked to perfection. For fine dining this is the place to go.
The menu has changed and we found it difficult to find something that sounded appetizing. The appetizers were heavy for the Springtime. The two servers seemed harried. It would be nice to have "by the glass wine" selections other than only the Williamsburg Winery wines. We thought it was expensive for the experience.
Felt like we were back in France. Entire evening balanced, food expertly prepared, presented and served, server discreet but attentive. Imaginative and elegant dishes. Our first, but definitely not our last.
A little more progressive vegetarian selection would put it over the top. Took my wife for our anniversary and was not disappointed.
Add a cheese board and port to your desert menu.
I had the best scallops I have ever tasted. Service was great, atmosphere nice, food presentation very nice.
absolutely FABULOUS! food was artfully prepared, inventive, and elegantly plated. Desserts were particularly good (goat cheese cake with balsamic pearls!).
Wine list was good, they were out of a few things but said a new edition was about to be printed.
Seth, our waiter, was outstanding. Attentive, unpretentious, engaging, and extremely knowledgeable.
Thanks for another great experience!
The food was ok but nothing I would get excited about. The portions were small. The prices were not in keeping for what you were served. The service was very slow. We were looking for a new restaurant to visit but were very disappointed in Cafe Provencal. We will not be going back and will not recommend this restauant to any of our friends.
Food was lackluster. First bottle of wine was bad ($100 bottle), and ambiance was not impressive for the prices. The wonderful waiter was the only saving grace. Disappointing.
