Cafe Provencal - Williamsburg
Everyone's food was lukewarm and portions for one diner were extremely small for the price - especially the butternut squash soup. There was not enough waitstaff for the five tables dining when we were. Only one person; the hostess had to jump in. Not good.
Open Table should have notified us about the price fixe menu. It was awful and we paid $300 plus tip. Thank goodness for the bread and wine. The service/waitress was incredible. It was a tough night for the wait staff. We weren’t the only ones having a problem. Honestly the only food that tasted good was the bread and the desert. Shame on you Open Table and Cafe Provencal.
Open Table did not provide the New Year's Eve details concerning set menu, price, etc. We were surprised to find out upon being seated that there was no menu and only one price. That should have been advertised. The meal was excellent.
We really appreciated Amber's attention to detail and delightful sense of humor.
Cafe Provencal never disappoints. The small dinning area provides a quiet, intimate place to have a relaxed unhurried meal. The Christmas Day dinner was excellent with a well thought out limited menu. The wine pairing option was very good. The service is always exceptional and Christmas Day was no exception. The owners of the Williamsburg Winery came to each table to thank customers for dinning with them which was an unexpected and a treat.
Fabulous food and wine for a great Christmas Eve dinner.
Elegant dining experience with exceptional food. Would return again and again.
Excellent meal and service. Totally worth it.
The menu is limited but we respect the benefit of doing a few options right. Often having a larger selection results in mediocre results. We ordered the chicken and scallops entrees which were tasty. We wanted to order only local wine but ended up with the Williamsburg Cabernet based on server recommendation that is bottled locally with outsourced grapes. It was lovely. The service and atmosphere was superb. Highly recommend this restaurant.
It was an outstanding dining experience. I will recommend it to all
The staff was incredibly helpful and accommodating
From the welcome to the seating to the low noise to the food to the service to the attentiveness of staff and friendly, but not invasive, interactions with our waiter....outstanding in every respect. Well worth the price.
Waited too long
Barely saw waiter
Water glasses not refilled
Food not cooked properly
Creative, delicious cuisine with excellent service.
good service, food portions were small for the price
This is our first experience at this restaurant. Absolutely one of the best dining experiences we ever had. The food was simply outstanding. The presentation, the quality of the food, the variety and creativeness of the entrées appetizers and desserts was simply exquisite. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is in the Williamsburg area. It is worth the trip to this restaurant for the Experience in the food. And to top it off the quality of the wine from the winery was as good as the quality of the food. We will definitely be making it a point to go back
Saturday night, party of 6. Waited over 90 minutes for food after we ordered. Restaurant NOT crowded.
Server apologized that kitchen had been trying to serve four tables at once. Four. Overwhelmed by four tables ordering at the same time? Once food arrived, only those who ordered the chicken enjoyed their entrees. Short ribs were extremely fatty and unappetizing. Veg ratatouille entree offensively tiny -- maybe 6 bites of vegetables and far smaller than a side salad at most restaurants. Several of us had to stop at the grocery store to buy food to eat at home once we returned, hours later than we had hoped. None of us will be back.
We had an outstanding dinner with excellent service. It was very pleasant to be out away from the town and to enjoy the quiet.
There were 5 of us. The Chicken, the Scallop and the Charcuterie plate was very good. The Rattatouille was pitiful! Overpriced for what it was and it was just prepared wierdly. All the vegetables were soft except carrots which were barely cooked. Very little flavor and I came away still hungry. In the beginning we had to ask to order wine before ordering for our meal as she didn't ask about drinks and instead went right into asking us if we were ready to order our meal. We had 3 desserts. The puffs were fine, the chocolate dome was fine...the goat cheeescake was terrible. Had a gelatin texture and a very hard cookie underneath. For $11 the expectation was something that at least tasted something more like a quality cheesecake. Oh...and we had to wait about 20 minutes for our dessert. We were ready to leave and call it quits when they arrived. Needless to say we won't be back or recommend this restaurant to our friends.
We were celebrating our Birthdays and new retirement status. It was lovely and memorable.
A little disappointing. A scallop entree was undercooked. Rockfish In bouillabaisse was over cooked. My butter poached lobster salad came with grilled and not poached lobster. Good but some flaws in the kitchen on our visit.
I was visiting my sister from California who recently moved to Williamsburg and we both visited the Williamsburg Winey then had dinner at Cafe Provencal. The ambience is much like French Provence and the restaurant has a creative and interesting menu. The food was great, we both had swordfish with a beet and duck starter. The service is attentive and pleasant and the wine list is varied. All in all a terrific experience which I would highly recommend.
Cafe Provençal is a great place to eat if you’re looking for a delicious/spectacular meal. They are self described as a “casual fancy restaurant” and they definitely deliver. The food was amazing (get the lamb if they have it!!!), the service was above expectation, and the wine is wonderful. If we are ever back in that area we will definitely return.
Mixed reviews. An elegant setting. Service wonderful. Vegetables undercooked . Specifically asked for nothing spicey and risotto quite spicey. Vegetables provided as a substitute but took quite awhile. Lamb excellent. Steak more done than requested. Desert lacklustre.
Cafe Provencal is always a wonderful, unique experience. Food was superb; service couldn’t have been better. Craig was a wonderful server, as he has been for us each time in the past. We are from out of town, but always have dinner at Cafe Provençal when we come to Williamsburg.
Cafe Provençal was a perfect end to a busy afternoon. Calm and comfortable surroundings and view, beautifully executed (if not innovative) dishes. Best of all, a chance to try Williamsburg Winery’s great wines at essentially retail bottle prices. Great food, wine, atmosphere, service and value.
Fantastic really good and recommend to everyone who like great wine
The ambiance was very quaint and relaxing. Our waiter was excellent— very attentive and knowledgeable. The cheese and charcuterie tray was amazing. My diver scallops were perfect and my wife’s filet mignon was as good as it gets. Thanks for making my birthday exceptional.
Super belated anniversary. Our waitress was sweet as can be & gave us complimentary coffee & a glass of wine before dinner as we were waiting for the restaurant to open & then an anniversary dessert in the house. By far the best scallops we’ve ever had ANYWHERE & lamb chops were very good as well. It was a very quiet place to have dinner & would def go back.
The setting of the cafe, in the Williamsburg Winery is quaint and refreshing, a beautiful place to have a romantic dinner. My husband and I started our weekend getaway there with dinner, and the food, setting, and service was wonderful. I loved the lamb and scallops, but my favorite was the seared tuna salad we had first. Our waiter was super friendly, fast, and very attentive to our needs. I can’t remember his name but it may have been Blaire. Anyway we both highly recommend Cafe Provençal and we will be back!
The experience was fantastic. One of the best dinners I have ever had. Amber our server was the most pleasant and helpful waitress we have ever had. She was very cheerful and welcoming. My wife has a dairy allergy and Amber and the Chef changed the sauces to accommodate her needs. Fantastic restaurant we will visit again. Highly recommend the Cafe Provençal to anyone visiting or living in Williamsburg.
Hands down the best meal I’ve had in a very long time. Excellent service excellent atmosphere. Was completely blown away. Will most certainly go back. Worth every penny.
Chef David McClure is absolutely brilliant, a master of his craft. The plate is his canvas on which he creates stunning works of art. His feast for the eyes is also a feast for the palate, with each presentation perfectly seasoned and balanced—much like a fine wine. Such are the talents of this chef that he has brought recognition to the Williamsburg Winery’s Café Provencal, which is now in contention for USA Today’s 10 Best Winery Restaurant, 2019.
Had hoped to be "wowed" but guess my expectations were too high.
Fresh salad greens and presentation of food lovely. Thought the profiteroles excellent.
Cafe Provencal is our special occasion favorite restaurant in Williamsburg. It never fails to meet our highest expectations. The food is beautifully prepared and presented; the menu always has something new to try. We will be back!
The wait staff was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. They add to the dining pleasure. The food presentation was a true work of art. The taste was fantastic. The total dining experience far exceeded our expectations.
The food was succulent. The scallops with pork belly, purple rice and garden vegetables is the best in Virginia.
The filet was tender, cook to perfection (medium rear). Amber offered outstanding service. She knew the menu very well. Her recommendations won us over. Can't wait to go back!
If you are ever in Williamsburg this is a must do for diner.
Romantic & European with a world-class chef. The setting and ambiance are identical to a favorite hotel/restaurant in a hill town near Turin, Italy. The food is even better, especially the chef’s creativity weaving-in local ingredients for world-class flavors and presentation. Very knowledgeable and pleasant server provided a perfect wine pairing. Who knew Virginia had grapes from French vine stock? Oh wait, Wine Enthusiast did….
Some food relied on sauce for flavor such as swordfish and blood orange dessert.
Overall nice place to go because of the great service and small attractive location.
