VERY DISAPPOINTING AND UPSETTING..OUR LAST NIGHT IN HAWAII AND THIS IS WHAT IT CAME DOWN TO..CAFE PORTOFINO DESERVES A ZERO, IN MY OPINION. WE MADE RESERVATION FOR 4 PEOPLE FOR 830PM SINCE THEY CLOSE AT 930PM. WHEN WE GOT TO THE HOST PODIUM, THE OLDER MAN TELLS ME THAT THEY CLOSED EARLY BECAUSE IT WAS SLOW SO THEY CLOSED THE KITCHEN. I INFORMED HIM THAT WE HAD A RESERVATION, KNOWING THAT RESERVATION GUESTS WERE STILL COMING WHY WOULD THEY CLOSE?? IN MY OPINION, CAFE PORTOFINO AND STAFF MADE A POOR JUDGMENT IN CLOSING EARLY KNOWING THAT GUESTS MADE RESERVATION, AND LEFT US WITH POOR QUALITY SERVICE.. RUTH KRAHN 702 994 6276
We dine there every year we come to Kauai and stay at Marriott’s. We love it and wouldn’t miss it
Great atmosphere, great food & great service! I would definitely recommend Cafe Portofino!
We enjoyed dining at Portafinos. We had been to that restaurant previously and always enjoyed the food, location and ambience.
This is one of the top five restaurants on Kauai or any of the other islands for that mater. The food is excellent and the staff is attentive and professional. The view is classic Kauai ocean view. Do yourself a real favor and head for Cafe Portofino.
Wife Birthday and Anniversary
We had heard this was really good Italian food. The lasagna hit the mark, but sadly, the rosoto was mushy. I felt the quality did not merit the price. The ambiance & service were great. We very much enjoyed the entertainment of Larry Rivera, a true gem of a by gone era. We will return for his show & give the food a another chance.
The Portofino is a great value. We love it. The view of Kalapaki Bay is outstanding!
Excellent food and ambiance AS USUALL. AGAIN, a Wonderful experience full of ALOHA.
Service is excellent but unfortunately both dinners that were served fell far short of what we expected and have experienced in the past. Risotto was soupy and tasteless, NY strip was quite fatty and undercooked. Overall quite disappointing. Not what we were expecting from one of our favorite places on the island.
Fabulous view of Kalapaki Beach and Nawiliwili Harbor! Top that with excellent Italian food and superior service, and you have our choice for date night and special occasions. We mentioned a dessert that we enjoyed at their pizza restaurant downstairs but didn’t see on the menu, but were told it had been a “special”. Moments later, our waitress told us the chef would make it for us if we could give him about 10 minutes...well worth the wait!
This restaurant has a way to go to get to a 4 or 5 star rating. I ordered the lobster tail at market price. That ended up being $65. It was the most overly cooked lobster tail I have ever had. I have had a better ceasar salad prepackaged from Costco. Never once we're we asked how are food was. This is an average resturant .
So disappointed. We chose this restaurant via reviews. It was our 20th anniversary. I had made a reservation 4 weeks in advance, and requested a nice table. We arrived, before I could say we had a reservation the host/Owner grabbed 2 menus and said this way I said we have reservation and he just shrugged. He offers a small table in front of bus station. I simply said, is there another table, we have reservation and its our 20th anniversary. Host rudely! And loudly says everyone here has reservation take this or wait 45 minutes. I was so embarrassed as many
people were staring. We were eventually moved to a table where previous patrons empty wine bottle sat in bucket and waiter looked to pour from it! We didn't even order bottle! Wait staff somewhat rude as we moved tables they seemed annoyed. Service not attentive. Food OK. The Beef Carpaccio app delicious entrees OK. We chose not to have dessert. Overall Not what we expected from a Marriott resort. Found out later, not part of Marriott, just near property. If in Lihue Kaui go to Dukes next door same view 10x better ambiance service.
Service was friendly and attentive. The guy playing the harp during dinner was a bit odd and made the place seem very dated, like 1960’s dated. The food was mediocre to average. Could have been so good if the flavors were there. Creme Brûlée dessert was horrible, we sent it back. I think this place could be so much better if they made the menu smaller (less options) so they could focus on what they can do the best and elevate that. And get rid of the harp. They guy was good but it’s just old. Maybe get a nice reggae band to go with the tropical-island vibe (it is an island after-all)!
We wanted to try this place last time we came to Kauai and made sure we had a reservation ready when we landed. Reserving was super simple, and we were sat promptly and in a great seat outside. Totally accommodated to our almost 3 year old also. My boyfriend ordered the ribeye and I ordered the clam linguine. Both items were outstanding. Well beyond our expectations. Everything was fresh and cooked to order and the shellfish was so amazing. We are from the pacific northwest, so we are picky about seafood and we have an abundance there and this was amazing. There was a man playing the harp during dinner which was wonderful to hear too. Our server was wonderful and kind. Great warm personality. THe owner chatted us up as we left and was very nice an inviting too. One thing we liked, was that the chefs are flown directly from Italy to cook for the restaurant. The coupon books had a coupon here and with 4 drinks and 2 entrees we paid less than $100. We were very happy and we will be back!!
We’re so glad some things don’t change. We love returning to Cafe Portofino, the setting is beautiful. Oceanfront, live harp music, perfect place for any occasion. Cafe Portofino is known for their fresh, authentic pasta which I’ve had many times before, this time I chose the fresh fish. My Mahi Mahi was moist and wonderful.
The service was slow for not being very busy. My fish was slightly over cooked but the sauce and vegetables were fantastic!
This establishment has anything your heart desires for appetizers and some of the tastiest Italian dishes you may desire. Excellent seafood plates, fine wines and cocktails.
We visit cafe Portofino every time we are in Kauai. The food is always great. This time, our waiter, Michael, went above and beyond with service and made the dinner even more special. So much so that we made reservations for 3 days later in his section. If you go, request to sit in Michael’s section.
Amazing food. Beautiful high end resteraunt. Just lovely all over.
Was really, really busy! Check in with reservations took a while since people at podium we’re discussing seatings arrangements.
It took a while to even get water, which our wait person bought to us. Veal porcini was great, veal piccata was tough.
We have been here many, many times and were mildly disappointed this time. We hope it gets better.
This was my third visit and Cafe Portofino never disappoints. The food is outstanding and the views are stunning. Great service every time. I highly recommend.
Excellent food & service with a beautiful view. The waitress made some great recommendations from the menu
The lasagna didn’t have good flavor, soggy noodles, warm temperature. The pasta noodles were either under cooked or soggy-over cooked. We’ve tried this restaurant 3 times & the same unfortunate experience each time.
Four of us went to Portofino and had a great time. For dinner two had lasagna, one eggplant and one had steak. The person who ordered the steak asked for a sauce that wasn't part of the meal but the chef said no problem making it and it was delicious. Our server was also friendly and very efficient without being obtrusive. This was our second time at this restaurant this trip and we weren't disappointed either time.
This restaurant is usually one of our favorites while at the Marriott Kauai Beach Club. Food never disappoints if you stick with pasta. One of our party had the fish and wasn’t impressed. Our service was horrible. No water on table and it took 15 minutes to get it. Waiter dropped a dirty fork on my husband’s silk Tommy Bahama shirt and was clueless that he did. Unfortunately, not sure I can recommend this place any longer.
Excellent food and service.
Excellent experience as usual. Never a disappointment after returning annually for 20 years! Extensive menu compared with any of the others at this resort.
Debbie our waitress was excellent!!!!!!!!!!
Four of us went to Portofino and ordered four different meals. All were delicious. One had fillet and asked for a different sauce than what was on the menu but with the special meal of the day. It wasn't a problem and he really enjoyed his dinner. One of us got the Osso Bucco, one a veal dish and one the Cannaloni. I'd recommend any of these dishes. Our service was a bit slow but being there were 4 of us it wasn't a huge problem.
Wait staff was very friendly, music was beautiful, views were great and the food was AMAZING
Loved everything about our dining experience at Cafe Portafino. Our server was very accommodating, we had a lovely table with a view of the ocean, the food was delicious and the overall ambiance made for a wonderful evening. I highly recommend it as a dining choice and will certainly return.
We ate dinner here twice during our stay on Kauai. It's a great spot for dinner if you are staying at the Kauai Marriott Resort, or just wrapped up a day at Kalapaki Beach.
The food was excellent. The portion sizes were good (sometimes much more than we could eat) and tasted delicious. The kids thoroughly enjoyed the spaghetti and meatballs.
There's a great view of the beach from the outdoor dining area. You can both see and hear the ocean. There's plenty of outdoor dining tables.
Finally, the service was excellent. The wait staff was friendly and helpful.
We really enjoyed the evening. Everyone loved their meal and our server was warm and attentive. We would recommend for groups and yet quiet enough for a couple.
Food was terrible. Prosciutto was cut way too thick, needed steak knife to cut it, steamed claims hard to see in a very small bowl with very little claim soup, pasta had no sauce added except for red coloring - was tasteless. All-in-all very poor food, could not eat it. We do not recommend.
Leader among the fine dining experience on Kauai. A good mix of tourist and local residents. The food is authentic and truly ethnic. I would definitely recommend to any diner.
I ordered Prawns sautéed in lemon, butter and capers. There is no prawn, looks like some shrimp imported from Vietnam. For being in Kauai, they should have Kauai prawn or shrimp instead. Don’t put it on the menu to mislead people when you serve shrimp instead of prawn.
Always amazing. We go here 3 times a month. Love everything especially the veal marsala. Yum
Visited this restaurant as part of staying at the Marriott Kauai resort. menu looked good. restaurant is right on the beach and right next to Dukes restaurant. view is great but food is very mediocre. bread appears out of a package instead of made in house. pasta is basically a large clump of likely pre-made noodles and mixed with whatever sauce you have selected. very unimpressive presentation for the price as pasta dishes were over 20 dollars. not even up to Olive Garden standards. look somewhere else for pasta on Kauai!!
