Cafe Portofino - Marriott Kauai Ratings and Reviews
The host showed us to a table right next to the harpist and the entryway, virtually the worst table in the restaurant. When I politely asked if my sister and I could instead sit at one of the tables next to the outdoor view, he said he’d not shown us there because he thought it was cold. Pretty lame reasoning for Kauai weather. He simply wanted to give two women by themselves the lesser table. He was fairly unfriendly. Food was fine but we had an issue with the specialty fish, waloo, or walu. It was explained that it was a local fish and since I’d never heard of it, while we were tasting it’s buttery flesh, I decided to Google it. The reports of this particular fish, also called Escolar, were upsetting and horrific, with virtually EVERY link on the internet explaining how this fish caused miserable digestion problems because of certain ester oils. I think the only reason we didn’t experience the dire gastrointestinal symptoms we’d read about was because we’d split the one portion so probably only had about 3 oz. each. All the same, both my sister and I felt our digestion system had been compromised a bit for the rest of our vacation. Very strange choice of local fish for an upscale restaurant. I intend to contact the restaurant, as well.
This restaurant was very disappointing. Nothing we ate was good, everything was mediocre or worse. The salad dressings (we tried 4 different kinds) were all bland and the salads were all overdressed. The pesto pasta was not edible as there was way too much sauce and it tasted bad. Even the desserts were blah. All of this for $200+ for 4 people which felt like a terrible waste of money.
Good Calamari. Nice and tender with excellent dipping sauce. Mediocre cannelloni. The chicken in the cannelloni was ground up and mealy. Not enough sauce or cheese.
Excellent service. The server couldn’t do much about the food quality. The linguine vongole was ok but could have used more flavor in the sauce, nice al dente linguine though. The tiramisu was good.
Everything was perfect! No complaints! Service was prompt. Salad was fresh and crisp. Seafood Diavolo was delicious. Shrimp Scampi with a side of pasta was perfect. Bread basket had a variety and warm. We visit Cafe Portofino every time we come to Kauai.
The host sat other couples before us who didn't have reservations, and we got a table under a torn awning. It rained. The food was mediocre, although it used to be good, and my husband was not pleased with any of it. We will think a long time before coming back.
Waited 40 minutes for a drink order. Food was good but there did not appear to be enough wait staff for amount of patrons. It was not overly crowded either. Don’t know what the problem was. Would not go back again even though I’m a Marriott vacation club owner and staying on site
Think it may be time for Portifino to fade into the sunset. Only get there about every 3 yrs but each time I return it seems a little more tired. Their pastas are fine but that's about it. The veal for scaloppini was thick and a steak knife would have been the correct utensil to cut it. The meat balls were dry and hard. If you want to experience MEATBALLS go across the road to Pietros and hope they are a special that night. The bruschetta and garlic bread are pathetic; tried to other past and sauces were fine but even the accompanying shrimp on one were small and below par. Everything seemed overpriced for the quality.
Sorry this is not Arrivederci, its Addio
I really wish my husband and I would have paid closer attention to all of the negative reviews. We were visiting Kauai on our honeymoon and staying at the Marriott. We figured we would stay close to the hotel one evening and dine at Cafe Portafino. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone. I was shocked to learn that it was 'real, authentic Italian.' The food was awful. Our scallop appetizer was swimming in a very strange, runny cheese sauce. My husband opted for the special of the night, which was some kind of seafood spaghetti. When it arrived, it was basically Costco's salsa mixed in with noodles and a weird fish that had a brown tint to it. (We purchase this exact same salsa all the time so we knew exactly what it was - I tried it too, and instantly thought 'oh my gosh, this is salsa!' Totally not a combo you want... The waitstaff was not very helpful, plus they were extremely slow when there weren't many tables, and didn't seem to care that the food was not edible. We aren't ones to leave bad reviews, but this was just a horrible experience all the way around. Not a way to enjoy a honeymoon. Do yourself a favor, listen to the reviews... go over to Duke's instead...
Easy to book a reservation online. We were greeted immediately upon arrival and quickly seated at a wonderful table overlooking the beach and ocean. Service was very attentive and our food came out fairly quickly. Delicious! I would look at the menu as classic Italian - though I'm not well-enough traveled to say that for sure. It offered a huge variety, and both our meals were incredible. Will definitely come back next time we're at the resort.
Our server, Debbie, was very attentive but did not hover over us. The food was spectacular as was the wine. A nice harp playing in the background made having a conversation easy. However, it is a tad long walk if you are not stYing at the resort, however it ended up being well worth it.
The food was very disappointing! I had the Scampi for $28.00. I got 6 small shrimp with a little butter and garlic. The side was a very unappetizing ratatouille. there was one piece of broccoli and one small carrot with it. My husband had the eggplant Parmesan. It was an interesting version, and not his favorite. We did finish with the tiramisu which was very good.
We have been to Café Portofino several times over the past few years and always have a great meal. We always love sitting on the deck overlooking the beautiful beach, which is hard to not enjoy.
The service is quick and friendly, and the menu is extensive with many great Italian dishes. I had the Pollo Marsala this time for a change of pace, and it was great.
My husband and I decided to celebrate our 1 year anniversary at this nice Italian restaurant, overall it was good , our server Evan was great, and very personable and attentive but the food took forever , and was cold when we got it. We also waited about 30 minutes to even get a bottle of wine! The ambiance was very nice and romantic , the harp player was amazing, and you can't beat the sunset over the ocean!
Such a beautiful setting and Giuseppe is so gracious and accommodating. We also go on Wednesday nights so we may hear Larry Rivera and his daughter Lurline. He is a treasure of Kauai and she has the sweetest voice and so charming. A must go to on a visit to Kauai.
