Café on the Green Ratings and Reviews
We were here for Valentine’s Day, and they only offered a fixed menu, which is not a criticism. The food however does deserve some criticism. The first course was a tomato basil soup, which was good, but served in a shot glass sized cup. The salad was a very plain lettuce, tomato and cucumber affair with an ok Italian dressing. I ordered red snapper with lobster, which didn’t smell quite right and after one bite was sent back to the kitchen. It was rubbery (probably under a heat lamp for a while) and had the consistency of leather. It tasted awful. I was given a replacement filet almost instantly, confirming my heat lamp theory, but it was actually good. My wife had the chicken entree and she rated it as average. The carrot cake was average diner quality. I would have expected this kind of experience for a fixed menu New Years deal, but not Valentine’s Day. The servers were all excellent and the venue is very nice. Too bad they were both let down by the kitchen.
The food is on a par with many NYC restaurants and the wait staff is attentive and accommodating - Luis, Omar and Carlos. We always have a delicious meal and a good time. The view of the golf course is beautiful in any season and the ambiance inside is comfortable and decorated to match the season. This is our best find in the greater Danbury area and a spot we can always rely on.
Our reservation was for Thanksgiving. We arrived a few minutes before our reservation time. Waited 15 minutes past the reserved time and had to inquire as to seating. The hostess seemed clueless. When we were seated the table was prepared (while we were seated) as though we were in a fast food restaurant. Our meals were under cooked and service was very poor. We had to request our drinks to be refilled as we were not approached by staff to refill.
Our appetizers, fresh mozzarella for me and risotto balls for my husband, were good. Salads were fine without an overkill of vinegar. The sorbet between courses was a nice touch. My husband's main course was off-menu veal parmigiana with pasta. It was delicious and a generous portion. I ordered chicken sorrentina and was disappointed. The small chicken cutlet was tough and chewy. It was topped with a minuscule layer of eggplant that I couldn't taste and a slice of mozzarella that hadn't even melted. That was topped with a wonderful tomato-based sauce. The side veggies of green and yellow squash were tasty. There were mashed potatoes, but I skipped them. The service was attentive and friendly.
Quiet and elegant dining experience which perfectly met the expectations of our guest who is an extremely well-travelled individual who was very happy to learn about this "new" restaurant. The table-side flambe preparation of the dessert of Bananas Foster is not to be missed!
My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Cafe on the Green. The restaurant is in the clubhouse at Richter Park Golf Course in Danbury. The location can be deceptive. It is MUCH better than a typical golf club eatery. My wife had seafood puttanesca and I had rigatoni with sweet Italian sausage and ricotta cheese. The food was excellent, the service very attentive without being overbearing and the wine list was quite extensive. While not inexpensive, the prices are very appropriate for the quality of the food, service, and ambiance. I would recommend Cafe on the Green to anyone looking for a nice dinner.
Not expecting a dining room in a old club club house in the middle of nowhere. We knew the golf course, which is very nice. But the menu for the bar was not available to the people in the dining room. On a Saturday afternoon the dining room was more formal than what we wanted. Wish we knew better when we made the trip.
We feel the need to yet again, write another fantastic review. We ALWAYS come here on our anniversary in December, when it is decorated for the winter and cozy-feeling. This time, we came here after a function we had in Newburgh, NY on a Sunday evening. Reservations made through Open Table, were easy, as always. We arrived half hour early and they seated us immediately. The waiter was friendly, as always. The appetizer, drinks, salads, dinner, desserts and coffee were, as always, impeccable and delicious. We wish they had something higher than a 5-star, because, quite simply, they certainly deserve it. They are situated on a golf course with a beautiful view. When we first got there, it was cloudy, but within minutes of being seated, the sun was streaming through the windows. We had a wonderful dinner. We cannot say enough. We hope that others read this review, as well as Open Table. We will keep coming here for our annivesary and other events, speaking of which, when we were there last night, there was a party going on, as well. The drive is worth the effort and though a tad pricey, we always feel it is worth every penny!! Great job again, Cafe on the Green!!
Food was delicious and the staff was very patient considering we had three small children in our group. They were very accommodating by bringing their food with the appetizers. However, there only seemed to be one waiter for the entire restaurant on a Sunday night. For that reason it took some time to order and get each course. The food selection including the specials were delicious and had a great variety. The scallops and short ribs were perfectly cooked and the prices were appropriate for the quality of the food.
