Cafe of India is my favorite Indian restaurant in this area and I revel in introducing friends to their fantastic Crackling Spinach. It is much better here than in competing restaurants! Wednesday, with a friend from Florida we found a Diwali festival of food in the buffet line. It was wonderful, and she loved the spinach too!

A useful OpenTable review criterion could be "The food at this restaurant tastes GOOD." I would check that box for this restaurant.

Best Indian food in DC. The ambiance is perfect, the servers are friendly and attentive, and you won't find a better lamb and spinach dish. A+

A civilized addition to the local scene

While there are many restaurants in the Friendship Heights area, Cafe of India is one of the few where it is possible to get food food in a quiet, comfortable booth. The service here is impeccable, with plenty of welcome advice--such as a recommendation for a tamarind-flavored marguerita, or a reminder that raita comes with the chutney--and a chance to try some of the classics of Indian cuisine. Reservations are recommended, since the tables fill quickly.

Very poor. Had eaten there many times. This time food very salty. Informed waiter and manager and the argued with me that it was not. Very insulting. Poor way to deal with regular customer.

Neighborhood jem. Great food. Service is so-so. You should get absolute clarification from the server on your order before he leaves. They brought the wrong dishes - similar to what we ordered and still excellent - but not what we ordered.

My friend and I really enjoyed Cafe of India. It was my first visit, and it was definitely worth the drive. The space was just large enough and the calm, quiet atmosphere was a welcome change from so many area restaurants. Our servers were polite, patient, and very helpful when it came time to order. And the food was SO delicious and beautifully presented! We both plan to go back to this restaurant in the very near future to try even more Indian dishes.

The food is very nice and not too spicy. Service is generally very good - the staff is courteous and friendly. On this occasion, the served the starter and entree together, which I find unusual and has not happened there before. Altogether, a good experience and good value for money but missing the edge.

For all the talk of chic and expensive Indian restaurants in DC, the Cafe of India never disappoints. The service is impeccable, as it always is in India itself. The Crackling Spinach is the best I've had and one order isn't enough. We ordered lamb shaag, chicken tikka masala, and cauliflower and potatoes, with a break basket. It was perfect for four. While the decor is somewhat nondescript and the lighting not great the elegance of the service and quality of the food make up for it. Beware: At 8:30 on a Friday night, they were ticketing illegal parkers.

Service was attentive without being overbearing. Since one item required longer cooking than the others, the waiter brought a complimentary basket of papadam to tide us over. I tried the tandoori lamb chops as a change from my usual fare and was very pleasantly surprised by the perfect spiciness and flavor of the little chops. Very good value as well.

This is a great value if you enjoy Indian cuisine.

My only gripe with it is that the buffet is very hot (spicy). I used to enjoy food that would take the enamel off of dishes, but as I've gotten older, I found I couldn't eat much of it. I'd mix it up with cooler dishes, but unless you like the cuisine on the hot and spicy side, you may want to ask the guys there which ones aren't so tough on the pallet.

If the food was less spicy, I'd give it five stars in every category. I doubt I'll go there again for the buffet. I'll wait until I can order if off the menu.

Very attentive, timely and pleasant service. Food was fresh and well-seasoned - had lamb saag, tandoori mint chicken and garlic naan and lacha paratha. About as good of Indian food as I've ever had. Would definitely go back!

Having traveled a lot in India, my standards are relatively high when judging American restaurants; I find most Indian food here bland because the spices are tired and/or common. My recent meal at Cafe of India was one of the best in D.C. for a long time, notably the Crackling Spinach. Its Tendoori Chicken is better than most, and the lamb in the Lamb Kohlapuri more tender than usual in Indian restaurants. One disappointment was the homemade ice cream: the rose too artificial, the mango lacking taste. Very good Papadams (though they uncommonly charge for them, $2.95, unlike most Indian restaurants, where they are brought to the table free) and good Naan, too. A bonus: draft beer, a rarity in Indian restaurants in D.C.

I had seen the restaurant from outside but had never gone in. We decided to try it on a Wednesday night with friends and we all loved it! Each dish we ordered was delicious and the service was very attentive. They advised us on whether dishes were very spicy or not, and they made one of their dishes more mild for someone in our group upon request. I highly recommend it.

The positives of Cafe of India include easy parking on streets nearby and the service was acceptable. But the quality of food was extremely disappointing. Punjabi chicken curry lacked character and tasted worse than anybody's ordinary chicken curry. Scallops with vegetables was horrible with tasteless frozen scallops and soggy overcooked vegetables. Overall, a disastrous dining experience and unfortunately, a sad representation of the great Indian cuisine.

We often dive here as it is very much of a neighborhood place. Very low key with excellent food at very fair prices. Nothing fancy, but just quality food. Service is always good with knowledgeable waiters. Best of all, unlike most restaurants, you can actually have a conversation with your dinner companions as it is very quiet! Good selection of both appetizers and main courses. Vegetarians will have many choices. Only "downer" is there are no Indian wines to chose from, but wine list is nice and fairly priced.
