Cafe Navarre Ratings and Reviews
We went here on a Monday night for my wife's birthday. We were taken back upon arrival because the bar was full on a Monday and the restaurant didn't have a pleasant aroma. I asked our server what was going on and she stated it was a business networking group and they were being served a scallop and mussels cassoulet. Once I told her that it wasn't a welcoming aroma, they were very attentive and took care of this quickly. That was the start to a great experience and meal. To start, we had the wild mushroom soup. This soup is part of the reason we decided to come back and it did not disappoint. This is a delicious soup and a specialty of the house. We had the braised short rib and the grilled salmon. The salmon was possibly the highest quality salmon I have had in the Midwest. The braised short-rib was also very good. We both loved our meals. We were too full for dessert so no rating on that. I would highly recommend this for a special occasion.
This was our first visit and it definitely won’t be our last! Server was attentive to all of our needs and knowledgeable about the menu. Our pork belly appetizer and rare tuna appetizer were outstanding. Meals were well seasoned and delicious as well. Restaurant is vibrant yet quiet enough to converse easily. A very enjoyable evening!!
The menu that was on open table app was not the menu provided when we sat down. Waitress said entire menu changed. Wouldn't have chose this restaurant based on the current menu.
Took 1 hour for dinners to come out with only 1 of 4 of us has simply a soup, no appetizers ordered.
Awesome evening. Food and service are always great. Only complaint is that the split Pork chop we went there for was no longer offered even though it was still on the online menu. Waitress said the online menu is so out of date. Um, update it.
Still love the place though.
In South Bend from California for the USC/Notre Dame game. This restaurant was recommended by friends. It hit my three must haves; atmosphere, great food and excellent service. Highly recommend the mushroom soup...lived up to its hipe. My husband loved the pork belly starter and said his Manhattan was the best he ever had. Had dessert, salted caramel cheesecake, and after dinner drinks at the bar. The service was excellent there too. Here's the pork belly.
We made the mistake of going on a football weekend, so it was much noisier than usual. We were seated in a small room with a large table of extremely loud people. Our host told us there were no other tables, but our server managed to come up with another one for us that was still noisy but not totally impossible. The food was good, but I wish there were some more interesting vegetarian options. The mushroom soup and the bread are outstanding. Our server was excellent.
In the past week, I have had brunch, lunch and dinner at Cafe Navarre and, as always, it has been terrific! The food is outstanding (particularly the new brunch menu), the service is friendly, and the bar is fun and welcoming. It is a great place to eat downtown, and has been since they opened.
Excellent food as always - salmon and halibut dishes were outstanding - CN never over cooks the fish like so many other places. Like sometimes happens, the service was not great and not what is expected of this venue. Rarely saw the server and poured our wine much of the time. This does not dull our attraction to one of our favorite restaurants.
We came into town from Indianapolis for a concert at Morris Performance Theater.
What a find this place was. the food was superb, I would make the drive again just to eat there. I am almost a vegan and the menu had great options. The server offered to speak to the chef to accommodate in case I did not find a plate that I could eat. we sat outside and a lovely warm fall night. it was a most enjoyable evening.
I go to an expensive restaurant for good food (#1). Everything else follows for me. Cafe Navarre has good service, good ambiance, good drinks and, in my opinion-so-so to lousy food. They try to be fancy and semi exotic and fail very badly while still trying to support high pricing. Another local restaurant that catered very successfully to the same clientele was Pat’s Pub, another was The Loft. They both served excellent simple food, had great service and a reasonably good ambiance. Both were great until their last day with both closing for the same reason -death of the owner. Not one local restauranteur has seen fit to follow where they left off with similiar food, drink and service with commensurate pricing. Why not? Brown Sanders
We recently ate at Cafe Navarre over a football weekend at Notre Dame.
We have eaten there three other evenings in the past year.
The food has always been wonderful! However this Friday evening it was not as remarkable as it has been on previous occasions. We were disappointed in the food, which is normally excellent. The service remains good and the ambiance is lovely.
Hopefully the next time we choose to eat there, it will live up to its previous standards.
After seeing an article on Sunday Brunch, my friends and I were excited to try it out, but were beyond disappointed.
1. The server, Lauren, was rude and made many mistakes to the order. First, not getting the order of my husband's done in time when we had alerted her to the fact he was leaving. He placed his order immediately upon arrival and he was the last person in our group of 10 to get it. He left without getting to eat. Second, I have a dairy allergy and requested no cheese on my salad, and of course there was cheese.
2. We had children in the group, and when requesting more drinks and bread, in order to make sure we had no meltdown, she was very reluctant to do so and was rude enough to say that I had first asked not to bring more drinks until the meals arrived (we didn't know that it would take close to an hour).
3. The Bloody Mary bar was not worth it! When I asked the bartender for horseradish, he said that it had to wait. I had not asked in a put out way, but nicely.
This all would have been understandable if the place was busy, but it was not. I would NOT recommend Sunday Brunch to anyone based on this experience.
That being said, we need to change our practice of tipping. I had a bad experience and my inclination to express this would have been to not give a tip, but since this is the wage they earn, I couldn't do that in good conscious. Instead, Cafe Navarre lost my business and respect
Excellent Sunday Brunch menu and found the food to be superior to any other restaurant in the area. The shrimp and grits was as good , if not better, than what I have eaten in New Orleans. Everyone else in our party raved about their meals too (Chicken and waffles). Service was great, white linens, silver wear and the Bloody Mary Bar was a nice surprise (though it lacked fresh horseradish). I felt it was a great value and we will make it a regular stop when in the area.
Cafe Navarre is a favorite restaurant. The food and service is always excellent. My husband had the filet and it is melt in your mouth tender and cooked to perfection. I had the mushroom soup which is the best I've ever had anywhere. I also had the pasta special which I would give a four star. Our waitress, Jo, was fantastic and made the evening so pleasurable. She recommended two very good wines and brought me samples of both to taste. We finished the evening with an excellent dessert which was on the house to celebrate my husband's birthday and it was an amble serving ( a banana foster type dish) great for sharing, although my husband didn't do much sharing! Love Cafe Navarre and can't wait to go back.
