We had dinner at Cafe Navarre on New Year’s Eve to celebrate our anniversary, which I shared on the Open Table reservation form. No mention of it at all by the hostess or wait staff, and we were rushed through our dinner. The entrees were brought out while we still had our salad and soup. The waitress said something about needing to get our entrees in before a large party that came in after us, but they hadn’t even ordered yet. The food was quite good, but our overall experience was disappointing.
The food was great. Wine and drink variety was acceptable, maybe a few more high quality French wines and cognac. The real issue is price., everything is a la carte. Paying upper $30-$40 for an entree that does not include salad or vegetable selection in this area is pricy. I paid $148.00 for a two person meal. That is what I would expect to pay in a top Chicago restaurant, not South Bend, In.
Great place. Been there several times. First time upstsirs. We had a party of seven and we sat upstairs in a semi-private room. It did not have quite as happening vibe as the main level but was very nice. Service was very attentive. Wine wad fairly priced. Food was great. Best place in South Bend for fine dining.
I'm worried that the ownership is getting comfortable with their place in town as the quality continues to decrease year after year. My most recent visit the lettuce was wilted but served anyways and two of our party had their steaks over done while one had it underdone. Their dessert options are also no longer special or unique (bring back the flourless chocolate cake!). The whole thing is becoming rote and stale and the food quality over my last several visits has been diminished. Bring back the upscale dining and feel.
Cafe Navarre has great food that is presented creatively. The kitchen was pretty slow however. On a day when it was busy, but not overly busy, it took us 45 minutes to get our food after we placed our order. For a business lunch, that is a LONG time.
Otherwise, Cafe Navarre has a diverse menu with options for just about everyone. It's rather noisy due to the acoustics of the dining room so don't plan on quiet or intimate conversation.
I would definitely go back to try some of the other options on the menu.
We always feel welcomed. Staff is friendly and attentive. Only wish is that there was more space to possibly have a second bar opening (possibly upstairs) on busy nights and holidays to accommodate those waiting for reservations. We have made Cafe Navarre one of our favorite places. Happy holidays to you all.
Great atmosphere.. very clean.. staff was very professional and overall helpful. Best steak I've had in years! Appetizer list had not traditional favorites, which was somewhat disappointing. We ordered the Bone Marrow, That was a one and only time we'll do that....
The biggest complaint I had was being seated by the emergency exit which was VERY cold!!
We left full, and happy.. In plenty of time for the show at the Morris.
First of all, I must say that our server was excellent. All the staff was attentive during the meal. Our ahi tuna appetizer was very good, as was our salad. Unfortunately, my “filet” was awful. It seemed like an inferior cut of meat as it was tough to cut and to chew. My husband swapped his Osso Bucco with me, which was just ok. He also was disappointed in the $39 filet. Will be careful choosing an entree here. Might be best off sticking to the appetizers and salads.
My wife didn’t like the menu so we didn’t go there very often. This time she said it was a improved menu so she said we would return more often. The ambiance is always nice and we are always treated well by the staff. Thanks for a wonderful evening. We will be back.
This is an OK downtown South Bend restaurant. I have been twice now, and I cannot rate it higher than 3 stars. I must admit, however, the ambience is good, and the space is awesome!
What we ordered: the Wedge Salad, the Roasted Beet Salad, the Navarre Salad, the French Onion Soup, the Sweet Potato Gnocchi, the New York Strip, and the Duck L'Orange.
The good: the wine recommendation from the drink specialist, the Sweet Potato Gnocchi (very good but a little too cool), the Wedge Salad (excellent), the French Onion Soup (very good), and the bread.
The bad: the New York Strip (not tender and tough to cut) and the Duck L'Orange (rubbery). Also, they didn't bring us the right salads at first (not the end of the world).
The ugly: the service--it wasn't necessarily slow, but it was just lackluster. I observed the servers struggle to find out who ordered what at the bar. A server walked right by my table with my soup and asked the tables around me. Some staff delivered plates to my table without using a tray. (And more...)
Bottom line: Ok, maybe good (at best). I'd probably recommend that a friend make the trip to Ruth’s Chris instead.
We really love the ambiance - creative use of an old bank building. Our favorite location is the balcony overlooking the main floor. It was my wife's birthday and despite the fact that they had two large groups in the upstairs rooms they were kind enough to honor our request to be seated on the balcony. Service was attentive and very friendly. The manager stopped by the table to assure that everything was to our liking. I had sea bass that was truly delicious. Rather than an entree my wife had several appetizers that she really enjoyed - amazing (her word) wild mushroom soup, great crab cocktail and delicious steak tartare. She always likes to have steak tartare when available at a restaurant (very hard to find these days). Our meal, the service and the beautiful old bank made a special occasion even more special.
We went here on a Monday night for my wife's birthday. We were taken back upon arrival because the bar was full on a Monday and the restaurant didn't have a pleasant aroma. I asked our server what was going on and she stated it was a business networking group and they were being served a scallop and mussels cassoulet. Once I told her that it wasn't a welcoming aroma, they were very attentive and took care of this quickly. That was the start to a great experience and meal. To start, we had the wild mushroom soup. This soup is part of the reason we decided to come back and it did not disappoint. This is a delicious soup and a specialty of the house. We had the braised short rib and the grilled salmon. The salmon was possibly the highest quality salmon I have had in the Midwest. The braised short-rib was also very good. We both loved our meals. We were too full for dessert so no rating on that. I would highly recommend this for a special occasion.
This was our first visit and it definitely won’t be our last! Server was attentive to all of our needs and knowledgeable about the menu. Our pork belly appetizer and rare tuna appetizer were outstanding. Meals were well seasoned and delicious as well. Restaurant is vibrant yet quiet enough to converse easily. A very enjoyable evening!!
The menu that was on open table app was not the menu provided when we sat down. Waitress said entire menu changed. Wouldn't have chose this restaurant based on the current menu.
Took 1 hour for dinners to come out with only 1 of 4 of us has simply a soup, no appetizers ordered.
Awesome evening. Food and service are always great. Only complaint is that the split Pork chop we went there for was no longer offered even though it was still on the online menu. Waitress said the online menu is so out of date. Um, update it.
Still love the place though.
In South Bend from California for the USC/Notre Dame game. This restaurant was recommended by friends. It hit my three must haves; atmosphere, great food and excellent service. Highly recommend the mushroom soup...lived up to its hipe. My husband loved the pork belly starter and said his Manhattan was the best he ever had. Had dessert, salted caramel cheesecake, and after dinner drinks at the bar. The service was excellent there too. Here's the pork belly.
We made the mistake of going on a football weekend, so it was much noisier than usual. We were seated in a small room with a large table of extremely loud people. Our host told us there were no other tables, but our server managed to come up with another one for us that was still noisy but not totally impossible. The food was good, but I wish there were some more interesting vegetarian options. The mushroom soup and the bread are outstanding. Our server was excellent.
