One of my favorite places to go for a date night . The first place I usually think of to go for dinner. The service for my last visit was a bit off and our waiter was as personable but overall a very good experience.
We had a great dinner and server! Thanks Cafe Navarre!
Always wonderful dinner at Cafe Navarre.
We are glad to hear that you had a wonderful dinner! We look forward to seeing you soon. Cheers!
Probably one of the best restaurants in South Bend. I had the best freshest swordfish that I have had in years. While the wine selection is nice, the mark up is extraordinary, approximately 250%. Nevertheless, I would not hesitate to return for fine dining in South Bend.
We are thrilled to hear you enjoyed our swordfish and wine selection. We look forward to your next visit. Cheers!
The best Onion soup I’ve had.
Overall a wonderful place to enjoy a great meal.
We are so glad that you loved our Onion Soup! We love it too! We hope you stop in again soon!
Excellent service. Delicious food! Dessert and drinks were very good. And the warm bread was fantastiC!
We are so happy to hear that you had a wonderful experience dining with us. We hope to see you in the restaurant again soon!
My grandmother is 101 and we made a big outing to Cafe Navarre. She loved it and the staff was so helpful and kind to us. Everything was delicious.
Thank you for sharing such a special person with us! We are so happy to hear that you all had a great experience. We look forward to seeing you all soon!
My wife and I really enjoyed Cafe Navarre, especially the food options and the service from Ryan. We eat pretty healthy food and this place had a number of legitimate vegetarian and vegan options, more than we find at many places. Very conveniently located downtown. And Ryan made it a memorable experience for us!
Thank you for the review! We are glad to hear that you and your wife enjoyed the vegetarian and vegan options on our menu. We will pass on your kind message to Ryan! Cheers!
Very disappointed in the menu options. The pork and steak frites selection was not very good and the meat was tough. The gnocchi, salads and dessert were excellent.
Thank you for taking the time to write this review. We are glad you enjoyed our gnocchi, salads, and dessert. We are sorry to hear that the pork and steak frites were unsatisfactory. We are addressing these issues. We hope to see you again soon!
Great food and service! The Mushroom soup is so yummy.
Thank you! Our mushroom soup is one of our favorites, too! Hope to see you soon!
I was in from out of town. The property was very lovely and comfortable. I ordered the restaurant week fish special and my sister ordered the pork chop. Neither lived up to our expectation. The sauce on the pork chop didn't match with the rest of the dish. The pork seemed to be cooked properly. The ragu was just ok. The fish was a very nice large portion but the rice was undercooked. The presentation of both dishes seemed clunky and not refined for the reputation of this restaurant according to my research. The chocolate cake was just ok and the sauce seemed like an afterthought with regard to the presentation.
Thank you for taking the time to write this review. We are sorry to hear that our food and presentation missed the mark. Our management team is addressing these issues. We hope next time you are in town, we can make up for this past experience. Our sincere apologies.
Overall Great Experience!
Thank you! Cheers!
I’m reluctant to write a negative review because I typically have pleasant experiences whenever I go out, and rarely find things to complain about. However, I was extremely dissatisfied after leaving Cafe Navarre.
The hostess was very pleasant when we arrived and directed us to a very secluded corner table for two, which my partner and I initially liked. Our server quickly greeted us and introduced himself but explained that, contrary to popular belief, the Downtown South Bend Restaurant Week menu was not 3 courses for $33 (which could have been split between two people easily) but was 3 courses, $33 PER PERSON. Now at this point, my partner and I were too polite to just decide elsewhere for dinner but we knew that this was going to be way more food and much more expensive than we had planned. The first courses were fine (a salad and gnocchi), but the second courses had a few issues. Not only did it take almost 50 minutes for the food to arrive, but once it had it was nothing short of underwhelming. We had the Steak Frittes and Grilled Salmon, but the salmon was questionably undercooked and the steak was accompanied by a huge amount of fries and a very bland sauce. The desserts were fine, but nothing more; Chocolate torte with a cherry jam of sort and an interesting Espresso Creme brûlée. I never thought that the food was inedible nor was it poor tasting, but it certainly was not worth the price. The final nail in the coffin for our negative opinion of Cafe Navarre was that there were tons of flies surrounding our table, constantly disturbing us during our meal. I hate to write such a lengthy review, especially because all of the staff seemed to be very kind, but the previously mentioned aspects of the dining experience left us feeling maybe we just won’t come back.
Thank you very much for taking the time to write this review. We are so sorry to hear you had such an unsatisfying experience. Our managers are addressing the issues that you have brought up. I will be following up with you privately to discuss this matter in more detail. Thank you again. And our sincerest apologies.
We ate here 4 times last week. It was awesome. Service was great and so was the food.
Thank you so much! We hope to see you soon!
This place used to be quite good by South Bend standards. Like most of the good restaurants there, however, it has reverted to the low local mean. Simple classic dishes, such as steak frites, are destroyed by the kitchen. Case in point: this week, I ordered the steak medium rare but got well done with the overcooked meat slathered in BBQ sauce to mask the dry meat. Even the French fries were burned to a crisp. My wife ordered the fish of the day, which she found inedible and barely touched. The service was abysmal, starting with the “greeter” who didn’t say a single word to us as we checked in with her and were led to our table. The desserts—including fruit sorbet—were overly sweet. The entire service was rushed because our reservation was at the ungodly late hour of 8:30pm; evidently the kitchen staff and servers had better places to be. Another one of the few decent South Bend restaurants bites the dust! Go to LaSalle Grill, Evil Czech, or Crooked Ewe instead; Cafe Navarre simply isn’t worth it anymore for refined (or even decent) dining.
Thank you very much for taking the time to write this review. We strive to have excellent service and delicious food. Clearly we have missed the mark. Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. And our sincere apologies.
Food was good, bartender was friendly and polite. Great success!
Thank you! See you soon!
Delicious food, excellent service, beautiful atmosphere!
Thanks so much! Hope to see you soon!
Service was fine and quite congenial. Background music a bit "hip" and loud (ish) for a Sunday evening! Restaurant Week special affordable and an opportunity for a nice night out.
Glad you enjoyed our Restaurant Week menu! Hope to see you soon!
Delicious and romantic, the perfect place for date night.
Thanks so much! Hope to see you for your next date night!
Cafe Navarre is a good downtown South Bend staple. There food is always delicious and the wait staff courteous. Their menu has enough variety without being overwhelming. It changes with the seasons but you can always count on a few favorites like French Onion Soup and the Steak Frites.
Thank you so much! The French Onion Soup is one of our favorites, too! See you soon!
My husband and I were having a much needed date night and everything from atmosphere to service were exceptional. The staff & managers went above and beyond to make sure we had a positive experience!
We’re so happy to hear you had such a fun date night! I will pass this along to John and Aaron. Hope to see you again soon!
Excellent service. Food was delicious. Definitely worth a return visit.
Thanks so much! See you soon!
A fantastic dining experience. One of our favorites in South Bend.
Thank you! Looking forward to your next visit!
Enjoyed our evening celebrating my in-laws 49th wedding anniversary. Had extra good deals because it was DTSB Restaurant Week.
Thank you for choosing us for such a special occasion! We hope to see you soon!
Great food and a wonderful environment. Love to go whenever we can.
Thank you so much! We hope to see you soon!
The night we went,we wanted to visit another restaurant. Their website said that they weren’t able to make any reservations. So,we decided to go to Cafe Navarre. We have enjoyed the food there before and thought it would be nice. My only concern is that I have ordered the scallop appetizer three times. The first time, it was everything I expected. The second time, it was nice, except, there were shiitake mushrooms instead of the oyster mushrooms that were described on the menu. I mentioned it to the waiter. The waiter said that they would check with the kitchen. No response. The third time, which is the last time I was there, there were button mushrooms on the plate, no more than a teaspoon of sauce. I mentioned to the waiter that there were button mushrooms on the plate not oyster. The waiter went to the kitchen and inquired. The response was that oyster mushrooms were not available. I mentioned my previous visits and the declining quality of mushrooms in the dish. I have spent the last 25 years in the kitchen. I rarely hear that a mushroom as common as oyster mushrooms are unavailable. I will not assume to know what is going on in your kitchen. I can only hope that it is not a reduction of quality that this establishment is steering towards. I know this sounds a bit petty, but , when the little things are let go, the bigger ones aren’t far behind.
Thank you very much for taking the time to write this review. We are so sorry to hear that your meals have been so inconsistent. Thank you again for bringing this to our attention.
We have eaten at Café Navarre several times in the year and have never had a bad experience. The food is delicious and we have never had a problem getting a table even last minute. I would recommend Café Navarre. Just wish there more restaurants in the South Bend area like this one.
Sounds like you are becoming a regular! We are so happy to hear this! Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We appreciate your feedback! Hope to see you again soon!
The french onion soup was the best i have ever had, the service was great, the restaurant was nice and clean, and the restrooms were very clean. The items on the menu were a little pricey but that is my only complaint.
Lovely Place for Dinner. The food is always outstanding and the service was lovely. Our wait staff were great about recommending items and I have a food allergy and they were very helpful in managing that. Always enjoy of meals.
It is a beautiful quiet dining room!!
Interesting menu, food was excellent although the Poke could have been a bit spicier. Excellent, friendly service. A bit pricey for South Bend, but worth an occasional visit.
Perfect place for a relaxing dinner after watching the US Senior Open. Food was great. Server was professional and fairly attentive.
Great food and service.
Great food with amazing service. Im normally a cook at home or fast food guy so to switch it up a little i decided to take my girlfriend somewhere fancy and it was fancy non the least. The server was very helpful and kind and the food was everything we were expecting. I even ate all my veggies it was that good. The price wasn't what im use too but it seemed fair
Impromptu early dinner on a Friday night and it was outstanding. Service and good were excellent and we were glad to be able to get a reservation for the same day.
Lunch was terrific. The wait staff was clearly new to the business and a bit awkward and clumsy, but earnest and had a good attitude. I'll be back
Excellent food. Excellent service. Easy to locate. Parking near by. A bit pricey.
Overall everything was excellent. Only negative - to many green beans and only one half slice of carrot. Beans were a little greasy. Would have preferred more carrots.
Cafe Navarre is one of our go-to restaurants for special occasions. The food and service can be counted on to be excellent everytime and the space was thoughtfully designed so that you can actually have a conversation, even if every table is full!
The food is good, but the prices are unwarranted. Thirty-seven dollars for pan sauteed trout is crazy.
