Cafe Muse Ratings and Reviews
It was surprisingly quiet for a Friday night in Royal Oak. I would've expected faster service since there were a total of 5 people.
Food was great, nice people and I appreciated the fact that it was quiet enough you didn't have to shout to be heard. Which is typical Friday night after 7:30.
I have eaten at Cafe Muse many times for lunch. . . always delicious. Good atmosphere, friendly staff, and great food. Going by that, I took 3 people there for dinner Fri. night. We arrived at 6:45, most tables were empty. . . that should have been a red flag. My drink was poor, as was someone else at our table. The bartender didn't know what she/he was doing. My friend's pasta was overcooked and "gummy". I ordered a burger "medium with no bacon". It came well done, with lots of bacon. Really disappointing and I was embarrassed in front of my friends.
I may come for lunch, but never again for dinner.
Not sure if it was a bad night because it was our first time there. There was only 4 tables of people there on a Friday night. Service was slow. Watched a couple sit at the bar for quite a while and no one came to wait on them so they left. I would've too. The food was ok but not great. Way over priced for the quality. Will not be returning
Arrived promptly and greeted by a hectic staff person. We were seated and provided menus and waters. We were a group of two and there was one other group of two already seated. Several minutes later our server arrived and asked for our drink orders. I deferred asking for time to peruse the wine list. That was a mistake. After a lengthy wait the server returned and took our drink orders only to disappear again for several more minutes. Upon return to take our food orders without my wine I reminded that I was waiting for wine. The server apologized and stated they were dealing with a problem with their reservation system (Open Table?) and they were busy with that issue. Of course that was troubling to hear since they were dealing with a back house problem at the expense of present customers. The food was delivered all at once even though we asked for pre-entree salads. The salad with apple and vinaigrette was inedible due to the high vinegar content in the dressing. The entree itself was a grilled cheese and short rib meat sandwich which was good if a bit soggy. We were not asked if we wanted a second glass of wine until after we had eaten dinner. Of course we declined a second glass and dessert and asked for the check. This was another one of those mysteries of a restaurant with high reviews failing to deliver. This was especially puzzling since there were only four patrons in the restaurant. All in all a bad experience.
I'm not really sure exactly what happened with this place tonight, but "off" is not an adequate description of what this night was....
Where to start?
1) They were out of the only dish I really wanted;
2) Slow doesn't begin to describe the service. We waited over an hour for our food, and this was after waiting 20 minutes for our drinks;
3) The food, while good, wasn't quite as described. It was tasty though - no complaints;
4) Our waitress seemed quite uninterested in actually serving. She seemed stressed out and very distracted
The most remarkable thing is, they weren't busy in the least. The place was half empty. I think I'm done with Cafe Muse until something changes. For $70, I expect better service.
We love Cafe Muse, however it appears that in September 2016 the menu has been changed and it is now called Dottie's southern bistro. No signage change or anything else to alert us of this change. We did not know any different until we sat down and were handed the new menus. I thought someone was playing a joke on us. Very disappointing.
Cafe Muse is a great breakfast/brunch place and WAS great for dinner, too: But they've changed the dinner menu to focus on chicken and waffles! Having said that, we found some delicious side dishes and made do. I had the short ribs (the only sort of regular dinner choice on the menu) and it was outstanding! We almost left due to wierd menu, but were glad we didn't.
Server was nice enough, but very weird service: we ordered soup and appetizers that came AFTER the dinner was served. We were seated at very high table and chairs that were very uncomfortable. But it was ALL good enough, overall, to recommend it.
I have to start by saying the food was amazing. I loved my meal as well as my husband's. That said, if it hadn't been so great I'm not sure I'd return. We went Cafe Muse (actually Dotties after 3) for a meal before going the comedy club. It's a very small venue with a contemporary feel. The size made it prone to get noisy. None of this would have been a problem save for one family with young children who seemed to use the entire dining area as a playground. This is obviously not the fault of the restaurant, but they made no attempt at remedying the situation. This was beyond disruptive to all other diners and we very nearly left. In fact, we probably would have if we could have cashed out but our server was nearly impossible to pin down. Perhaps they were understaffed that night (I can be sympathetic) but our server did not take our order until 28 minutes after we'd been sat. By the time we ordered and got our food we had to hurry to leave to get to our show. The server took our card for payment and disappeared out of sight for 13 minutes!! Meanwhile the hostess was sitting at the front door doing nothing (because all tables were full). I normally am not in a rush and truthfully I did not tell her were were on a schedule, but when you arrive at a restaurant (with reservations for 2 people) at 6:30 you expect to be out before 8. I will probably go back and give them another chance. It could have been an off night and the food really was good.
I was disappointed in the dinner menu. I took my family there after looking at the dinner menu online and the menu they gave us was completely different then the one online. There were no appetizer options and no real dinner options. This menu looked like a lunch/brunch menu. I was hoping to get scallops or something more than grilled cheese or a burger. Then when asked about kid options there were none. So we had to pay for a giant order of mac and cheese, which we ended up taking most of it home because a 2 year old does not eat that much. I was hoping for something more than what they had to offer, so I was completely disappointed. I must add that I do love their breakfast and brunch but I would never go there for dinner again.
Can't wait to visit again. Their scallops and bacon-wrapped chorizo stuffed dates are absolutely delicious. Definitely try the complimentary bread - it's so fresh and flavorful. I love that they favor organic and locally sourced products. Great vegetarian options as well.
I could not help but notice how empty Royal Oak was last weekend for restaurant week. Even Cafe Muse had some space available. I was shocked, especially because they had a great RORW menu (much better than last year's), for $35. The mushroom bisque was excellent, the cioppino good, but needed some grilled sourdough on the side for the broth, and the banana's foster bread pudding was certainly worth cheating on my diet. This is a restaurant that I do not go to often enough, but this occasion reminded me that I should and will.
We were very fortunate to have Lindsay as our server because of her superior knowledge of wine. Every bottle she recommended (we had three!) was better than the last, and the prices were so reasonable. She knows her wine and has done a fantastic job creating a wine list that includes gems that are rarely found at other restaurants. Service from everyone was exceptional: Water was always filled promptly, plates cleared quickly, bread replenished, wine poured. My pork loin was prepared just how I ordered it and the sides were perfect accompaniments. Others raved about the mushroom risotto, mac & cheese, and very juicy and flavorful burger. Cafe Muse is most certainly my go-to place for a memorable dining experience.
The food was very good but kitchen lost our ticket and we waited over an hour for our dinner. The waitress credited us $13 for one of our sandwiches which we thought was insignificant due to our wait and we had tickets to an event that evening. We overheard the waitress apologizing to the table next to us for the long wait on the dinners. I would be hesitant about returning to the restaurant unless you have plenty of time.
I was excited to eat at Cafe Muse, as previous friends had raved about it. Unfortunately, my experience was nothing to rave about. My goat cheese and beet salad, lacked goat cheese (although the waiter claimed it was under the baby kale, dressed in olive oil-- it was not there in any meaningful amount). The beef short rib, was extremely dry (surprising for a short rib, as I usually expect a short rib to be moist and tender. The chef paired this dry short rib with an even drier fried polenta-- terrible combination. I would have liked some veggies to enhance the plate. My friend order the cod special, which was not properly de-boned and presented without any appropriate accompaniment. All in all, was a disappointing meal. There are better options in Royal Oak.
We came here because our friends recommended it. We love good food and wine. We really like wine. Their wine list is eclectic and well put together. The prices are very good as well; most places gauge you when it comes to wine and I feel like you get a great selection at a very reasonable price. The service was friendly and efficient. Not too in your face but our waiter was around when we needed anything. We ordered a few different things and I have to say the food was good. The lasagna was huge but was a little bland. The chicken looked amazing but also didn't have the big flavor I was looking for. It was good. We will just try different things next time. I loved the vibe in there too. We will be back.
We try to go to Café Muse at least 1 X per month for either lunch or dinner. The menu changes with the season so it is always interesting. I usually order the duck entre and have never been disappointed. The bar and dining area can get noisy but there is a side room that you can request which is pleasant. Our service this visit was impeccable.
