Café Murano - St James
This place is gold, no pretention, great basic but very well done food. Haven't enjoyed a meal this much in years.
A really lovely atmosphere in the café . Friendly and attentive staff and good service.
Would definitely recommend this restaurant for a special occasion.
I booked that morning counter seating for two . Table seating was not available but counter is what I wanted anyway.
Menus arrived promptly and the waiters were friendly and attentive throughout. We chose the Mozzarella and the Octopus Carpaccio to start and the Chicken Milanese and Tortelli as the mains, all wonderfully prepared and presented and washed down with a nice bottle of Gavi di Gavi
I have seen other reviews comment on portion size. I suspect this may be directed at the ravioli family, as my Tortelli was, shall we say, a modest portion - as a starter it must have only a few parcels, and so although it was rich and perfectly done, I was glad to be able to share the potato fritti with rosemary on the side we had ordered. However, I have found this at other high end Italian restaurants and consider it just the way it is done; you are not eating in a mid-market pizza pasta joint where it would be piled high.
We shared a blackberry tart with vanilla ice cream to finish, accompanied by glasses of dessert wine.
The place was full and the decor, the buzz and the lighting were just right. The cool outside was kept at bay with a thick curtain, but it may work better if they were to lose the table to the left as you enter and create a small glass lobby. A hook for my partner's handbag in front of us and not to the side would have been welcome. (Dear Angela, these are the sorts of things you only notice when everything else is so good!)
For those inclined to drink more than they should, bear in mind the loos are down a wide and perfectly safe, but fairly steep, staircase at the back of the room!
I look forward to returning.
Excellent!! First time we have eaten at this restaurant. £24 set menu excellent value. Very attentive staff. Knowledgeable wine waiter. Made to feel very welcome. Highly recommended.
Never go for set menu!!! Awful experience
Fantastic food with great service. Really busy when we arrived - Sri is on the house while we waited - fab!
Super cafe/ restaurant in the heart of St James. Buzzing at lunch. Plenty of choice on the reasonable a la carte menu as well as a well priced set menu. Food delicious had the arancini and caponata followed by venison ragu tagliatelle. Very friendly and efficient service, will be returning.
As always such a treat - food excellent - delicious Soave and fabulous service from our Australian waiter who we have met before
Had a business lunch there. Very good for that. Could also see it being a nice option for something more social. Had the two-course set lunch, which was very good value. Nice fennel sausage and beans, beautiful chocolate torte. My colleague liked the gnocchi. Portions looked a bit small when they arrived, but actually turned out to be a very satisfying amount.
We had a fantastic meal at Cafe Murano, with excellent service- we stayed almost 4 hours with no complaint from anyone. I'm already planning when I can go back...
Have now tried both Covent Garden had to go up to bar a couple of times to ask for orders to be taken/bill). Would certainly recommend.
Wonderful food. Difficult to choose- they all look so good. The Hartnett red and wine are very good. Service at the bar was excellent.
Normally so good. Today the service was lacking, pasta overcooked and unfortunately they let a group of three very drunk young men in to dine which spoiled the whole atmosphere.
We enjoyed our visit to Cafe Murano; the food was very good, although portions were a little smaller than expected. We were looked after very well, and would be happy to return.
Food was excellent. My only complaint was that the starter course was tiny. 2 minuscule leeks the size of a spring onion. Such a shame. All else was first class. Excellent atmosphere.
The food and service were good, the lighting was a bit dark and quite difficult to read the menu.
Lovely food although pasta broccoli ratio was a little too much on side of pasta. Very close to door and didn’t feel we were part of main restaurant. Otherwise all good.
Thank you to Daniel and the team.
Very enjoyable meal in St James. Good food at reasonable prices.
Good food, delightful service, but noise unbearable due to poor accoustics. Made it difficult to concentrate on what we were eating. Sadly, could not wait to escape. Ears still ringing on the way home! Two men on neighbouring table asked to be moved part way through their meal. May be more comfortable nearer the front.
culatello was not culatello , thick and not melting
tiramisu was awful , heavy heavy , not a true tiramisu
sitting next to a door , freezing , windy and Noisy
Went for a light dinner. Pasta was very good. Service was great.
Visited Murano to celebrate a 50th birthday. Ate from the Sunday lunch Italian style menu. Each course was served with great care and the presentation was excellent. However, it was the dessert that stole the show. An amazing chocolate and hazelnut torte. Staff were really passionate and knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients. A very enjoyable meal and experience.
I stumbled across Cafe Murano on St.James St by a wonderful accident when I was looking for a quick sandwich. However on arrival a great we welcome, amazing food & excellent customer service meant this turned into an unforgettable dining experience. I dined at St. James St for the 4th time on Saturday & was equally wowed hence informing friends, family & friends about your restaurant. My request of a birthday message on the dessert missing was overlooked, despite this my guest commented "The meal was superb". Thank you to your passionate staff team who create a warm/ relaxed ambience and the Chef for the magic on a plate.
In danger of losing its edge. Need to change menu more frequently staff were friendly, professional and welcoming Sharpen up
Love it . As good as ever
Great staff and the food - well amazing !
Love the wine list too
We were told we had the table for 2 hours on the phone, we were told when we arrived, we were told when we ordered, we were told when our main course arrived and we were asked 25 mins before the 2 hours was up if we wanted coffee or the bill as the table was required back in 20 mins. The food was fab, apart from the above the service was good. It was pretty good value, but I felt rushed and stressed from start to finish. The whole experience could be dramatically improved by a more relaxed approach. We actually didn’t need any longer and we were ready to go within the 2 hours, but the reminders from every member of staff who visited our table was relentless. Don’t know if I’ll come again
This was my second visit here, and the lunchtime crowd was buzzing. My starter of Risotto with Osso Bucco and Gremolata was fantastic, followed by a lovely Chicken Milanese. I ordered a side dish of Potatoes Fritti with Rosemary, which turned out to be quite large cubed fried potatoes, and were the only disappointment in a quite lovely meal. The staff were all very much on the ball, and always amusing and entertaining. I hoovered down a lovely carafe of Angela Hartnett red. Enough said. Marvellous
Perfect Manhattan cocktail was indeed perfect. Simple fresh food prepared well.
Great food as always. And our server was charming with nothing too much trouble
We were rather disappointed with the menu choice - not terribly exciting. We were 4 friends having lunch and were squashed on to a very small table. The service was excellent but overall felt that the meal was not value for money.
Really lovely way to have a late Sunday lunch. Lovely food, great house wine, relaxed feel. We were the last in the restaurant and did not feel that we had to rush so that they could close.
Cool, sophisticated restaurant with attentive service and delicious authentic Italian dishes. Real risotto Milanese, delicate fish dishes and great Sicilian caponata and arancini to start. Good Italian wines by the carafe and by the glass.
Wonderful Saturday lunch. Booked seating at the counter, which was a bit different but a good experience.
Cafe Murano never disappoints. Delicious, unfussy food - but special too - knowledgeable and charming staff and a gem of an interior - buzzy and cosy, but somehow intimate too (not too noisy). Love it!
Nice and relaxing atmosphere
Food very average and menu over simplified
Kids menu very plain
Could get incredibly noise
We have been to Cafe Murano a few times. We love it there - ambience great, service generally excellent and very thoughtful. Food elegant, straightforward northern Italian.
This time there was a feeling of being understaffed. Took some time to get food, there was a lack of grip to the service and sadly it affected the food which arrived barely warm. Disappointing.
Good location just off Piccadilly and a lively atmosphere on Saturday evening.
Food is good not great - filling pasta dishes with ok flavours. Puddings were disappointingly unimaginative. It's expensive - as you would expect in that area - and the average quality of the food left us feeling it's a bit overpriced. But it's worth a try.
Disappointing dining experience comprising very average/bland food and poor service.
I like the lively casual atmosphere that is unusual for that area. Its still great for business butr it is not too formal so you can enjoy it for either business or social. The food is simple but very good and the menu has a diverse choice rather than being very specific to meats and fish dishes. As a vegetarian I appreciate that diverse choice.
