Great food and coffee quiet little gem near Japantown. Only minus orange juice didn't taste like fresh squeezed.
We made a reservation for Mother’s Day. When we got there, they had no record of the reservation. We weren’t the only one this happened to. They had the majority of the restaurant set up for a painting class. At first I thought this was a Mother’s Day special thing, but after reading other reviews, I realize I was wrong. We started hearing other patrons complaining that no one had taken their orders. We decided not to wait and found another place to eat. It was delicious, very accommodating and perfect for Mother’s Day, unlike Cafe Majestic.
It was like Cafe Majestic didn’t know it was Mother’s Day and was not prepared in the least for it. Major mistake on the food and beverage director or restaurant manager’s part. You left your restaurant staff and hotel staff floundering and they failed. Very disappointing.
When we arrived, there seemed to be no professional dining staff anywhere. Nobody seemed to know anything about our reservation and no tables were set for a party of three. They cleared a table at a banquette for us, but the larger issue was that there was a paint-splattered dropcloth on the floor and dozens of chairs and easels cluttering the center of the room. We soon learned about the weekly painting class that takes place in the room, something we knew nothing about when making the reservation.
Our table had a tablecloth on it and nothing else. There was no sugar or table setting on the table. We had to get that ourselves. We were not offered water, juice, or anything else.
Getting any staff's attention over the painting class was very difficult. We felt utterly like an afterthought. The food took too long to arrive, considering there were hardly any diners in the room. Everything was cold. The syrup tasted like Aunt Jemima.
We made the best of it and ate the food, which certainly tasted fine - not really worth the price, but fine.
This booths were dirty. There was old paint and quite a lot of hair on the, as if they hadn’t been wiped or dusted in ages. I was served cream that was so old there was a line in the saucer and it curdled in my coffee. When our food came it was served with wilted flowers as decoration on the plate! The bathroom was dirty. There were boxes lying around in random corners. The service was incredibly slow especially for only having two tables at one point. There was a conference screen still up ruining what could have been a mistakenly decent first impression. The glass ramekin that held the sugar packet was disgusting. The menu was unoriginal and limited especially for Mother’s Day. There were bugs circling our table. I couldn’t get a spoon to stir my coffee. We weren’t given menus until 10 minutes after we were seated. This place needs a solid scrub from top to bottom and clearly some new management. Until then STAY AWAY. It’s not worth it and it certainly wasn’t for my Mother’s Day. I’m just happy we weren’t staying here. Nothing encouraged me the rooms would be worth it either.
The menu online is not the menu we received. Also, a whole portion of the breakfast menu was “unavailable” basically everything that’s was plain eggs/meat or pancakes.
There were only two other parties in the restaurant (4 top and a 2 too) and it still took us almost an hour and a half to get our food.
My poached eggs were cold, mine and my aunts hash browns were undercooked. They brought our food out before my moms and we were done eating our food before my mom’s even came out.
If you're in a pinch for this area/location specifically, maybe. My nephew said his hamburger was good. My crab cake eggs benedict was not good. The hollandaise sauce was clumpy and unusual. The potatoes with the brunch were pretty bad. They seemed like they had been sitting under a heat lamp all morning. It's a lovely room, but there is no attention to detail. The hotel entry was cluttered and the whole place seemed a bit disheveled and unkempt.
This was one of the worst experiences in my dining career! We invited friends to be our guests for my wife's birthday celebration. I called the day before to check on the corkage fee since we own a winery and wanted to bring our own wine, and I was told that the restaurant was closed since it was Monday, but I would get a call Monday morning after the restaurant opened at 7am for breakfast, Not heraing back, I called a 5pm and was told that noone was there yet. I explained the problem to the front desk manager who could provide no help... and we were to pick up our guest from Sonoma at 5:30 for the ride into the city from our home in Kentfield. When I finally got someone they said that the restaurant was closed for a special event. I asked why they didn't call and was told that they had not consulted their Open Table list. I asked that the manager call me... and also asked for a call or note from the owner, providing my email address. When I checked online, this has happened repeatedly. They should not be allowed to stay in business and ruin peoples dinner parties... and certainly Open Table should not be a party to this!
Arrived on time for our 5:15pm Open Table reservation on a Friday evening. Walked into the dining room and it was obvious there was a private party going on. Justine then confirmed this and said, "I guess no one scheduled this with Open Table." Guess not. He offered us a rather lame table in the bar, then in the library (eating on our laps). Not acceptable. We left.
We were looking forward to this dinner to celebrate a special occasion. Put on our nice duds and spent some time searching for parking. What a waste.
Do yourself a favor and phone (several times) to confirm that this restaurant actually has a table for the reservation you made.
Booked a 9am reservation for breakfast. Didn't realize this was part of a hotel. The service was reallllly slow and the food was so-so. Fine if you're staying there for business, but would recommend walking a few blocks away for something more special.
Enjoyed every aspect of our dinner. Decided to eat in the gorgeous bar with it's large butterfly collection. The bartender was professional,kind and served us quickly and saw to our every need.

Extremely unpleasant seating for dining. We had dinner reservations for four adults. Instead of being properly seated in the dining room area, we were seated without so much as an explanation, or even inquiry. The dining area was closed due to a private party but we were not informed at reservation, or upon entry. The BAR used low seats and low tables which are highly uncomfortable especially for a meal lasting 2 hours. Service for such a small bar (seated less than 20 ) was SLOW despite the bar being nearly empty. Waited nearly 30 minutes for the food arrived we were given one bread basket with five small pieces for two tables. It took nearly 30 minutes to get the staff to get more. The second time had few in quantity, the third time the staff forgot and never brought it. As the night progressed service got better, but, only because we kept on asking. The foods (calamari, bruschetta, fish, steak, pork chop, chicken) were decent but nothing to specifically visit this restaurant. We ordered drinks and instead of placing it in front of the correct person, they put it where it was convenient for the server which was for the wrong person. The biggest shortcoming was the lack of honesty & professionalism. Do you enjoy suffering through blasting music? We found the noise unpleasant and did not add to the dining experience. We even requested the music be lowered no less than 3 times. Do you enjoy loud sounds from the dining area because the staff failed to close the French doors, opened them and allowed the doors to stay open all night? Or, do you enjoy sitting for a formal meal in extremely uncomfortable seats?Bottomline, the bar is NOT where you should ever seat people for formal dinner!! If you cannot seat patrons in the dining area, please do not take the reservation it is grossly inappropriate and dishonest. Tip to all potential patrons: Make sure the dining room is not booked call in advance.
The food was good, the room is beautiful. The 3 course dinner special was well priced. Don't trust the waitress (or receptionist, if they have one on the night you go) to check you in for your Open Table reservation or you will spend weeks trying to obtain credit, even if you specifically mention the reservation.
I don't know whether it was a glitch in Cafe Majestic ' system or the Open Table system, but I don't really care! I arrived on time with my party of 6 and received a blank stare, was told there was a private party for 40 people and that the chef was off for the night. Not sure how they planned to feed 40 people with no chef but that was not my issue. SOMEONE needs to fix that glitch -- now...
I had not been to the Majestic for 20 years so my review is only a comparison of the lovely place it used to be. Now, it seemed considerably run down and the gracious old-world hospitality was gone. There were not the beautiful fresh flowers of the past, but tacky ornamentation. The food was excellent and good value, but it is no longer a special place to be. I reported that the lady's room was quite dirty and in need of service -- the response was the equivalent of "oh well, yeah..." It is under different ownership. I know everything changes, but I was disappointed.
Just a beautiful settiing, quiet, old world elegance--away from the noise, hustle and bustle and the food was great too.
Although it was very hard to find a parking spot, we were the 1st there.The waitress was great and very friendly.Food was good but expensive for the size of servings.
Delicious breakfast in a pretty and quiet setting. We made brunch reservations for a Sunday at 12:30 on Open Table and upon arriving they had an art class in most of the room and said that the kitchen closed at 12:30. We persisted as we had a confirmation. They served us and it was excellent food.
The place is sad. Half of the restaurant had crooked table clothes with no place settings. We were the only people there for most of the time other than an (presumably) employee sleeping in a back booth and other workers in another booth tasting spirits. Food was just OK. Waitress was very sweet. We won't go back anytime soon.
This restaurant was closed when we arrived. This was supposed to be a trial run on breakfast for my bridal shower, so this was a big disappointment.
I felt sorry for the poor waitress who said the bartender didn't show up. She was trying to wait tables in the dining room, bartend in the lounge and hostess all at once. She served us a complimentary drink because all 8 customers in the bar were so patient and understanding. Even so, this was substandard service for SF.
Filet mignon was cooked to perfection and chicken piccata sauce was delicious. Very good service.

I love this little gem of a place! I just wish the owners would invest in sprucing up the place and. Leaning it up a bit. It is really special and deserves to be kept well.
We used Christmas Eve dining. What a treat to discover the cafe at Hotel Majestic. It was quiet, elegant and lent just the right touch to a memorable evening dining with our college aged son. It was wonderful not to fight the crowds, nore to be overwhelmed by loud music. The food was good, not great. But, a nice tradeoff on food to have such an atmosphere! The service was also outstanding, particularly given that the ONE waiter was not prepared for such a crowd.
This used to be one of our favorite places. Part of the reason was the ambiance - and that is still really good. The food is also good. But there was almost no one in the restaurant -- and it was Saturday night! And the service was terrible. Even though our waiter had no other table to servie when we first arrived, he couldn't remember what we ordered, and brought out our main courses before the salads he had forgotten about. While we were eating, a few more people arrived so that by the time we were finished four tables were filled. I don't know why it was so empty -- maybe it's due of the service, because it's not the ambiance or the food that's keeping people away.
Don't miss this one. The setting is "classic" and the menu has quite a variety to select from-
Lovely hotel restaurant with all the elegant appointments, yet very comfortable and casual. Excellent California cuisine menu and attentive, knowledgeable service. A great experience.
Of our party of 5, we had the Calimari Steak, Chicken Scallopini, Eggplant Parmesan, Beef Wellington and the Veal Scallopini. the only real let down was the Wellington. This entree, which seemed to be an attempt to present a deconstructed version of the classic meal was nothing more that a small fillet and a crispy tweel of philo dough. I would have expected a little more effort for $32. My only other comment was that the vegetables were a little over-cooked and should have had a little crunch left. Environment was plesant, the cocktails were very good and I did enjoy the wine list. In the end, the price was alittle high, but if the Wellington was more aligned to the traditional version, I probably wouldn't be complaining about it.
I took my teen son out to breakfast and was delighted with the menu and service at this lovely hotel cafe. He's already asking me when we can eat breakfast there again. I highly recommend the Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict. Delicious!
We were meeting friends and we found that this restaurant was very close to our meeting spot. We made early reservations and even though it was Saturday night we were the only diners. Our immediate impression of the waiter was that he seemed a bit disconnected but we simply assumed he was eccentric. We gave him our orders and asked for bread. He wandered around the restaurant for a while. We asked for bread again. He wandered some more and we asked for bread again and he said he'd bring it right away. He then became engrossed with something at the wait station for a while and then wandered over to us again and asked what we would like to order. All this with no one else in the restaurant. We left shortly thereafter.
We were looking for a close-by, reasonably-priced restaurant to have dinner before attending a play at the Custom Made Theater on Gough. This fit the bill perfectly. We were skeptical when we got there and the dining room was pretty empty, although the bar was hopping. The food was very good, though. We heard the chef had come from Original Joe's. The restaurant is located in a quaint boutique hotel. The dining room was nicely decorated, and very comfortable. It reminded me of old-time San Francisco with upholstered seating, white tablecloths, soft lighting.
Breakfast on weekdays: Awful. The hash browns are pre-formed like at McDonald's, the sour dough toast is some generic white bread from Costco (this is San Francisco! Where's the great sour dough?), the juice was from concentrate, and the bacon was microwaved. Brunch on Sunday: Far better. Still no SF sour dough, but the potatoes were nicely roasted, the crab cake benedict was very nicely done (the crab cake actually replaces the English muffin), and overall it was a far more pleasant experience. Don't think we'd choose to eat there again because SF is SF -- lots of great places to eat. Kudos to the wait staff, all of whom are very gracious. Beautiful restaurant; just not beautiful food.
We went on valentines day. While the ambience and service was great it was clearly speed dinner though it was clear that it was not fully booked for that dinner. Salad was served very quickly even before bread. The meal was immediately served after salad and dessert immediately. Dinner was quite tasty as was the glass of wine but clearly not a 60/each meal. Maybe this is why I could get a 3 day before reservation. All other short term openings were speciality restaurants like Mexican, Thai, etc. Because of overpriced speed meal it only gets a 3 star overall
This restaurant had good food, but I was surprised to smell cigarette smoke while in the dining area.
The first bad sign was only three other tables in this beautiful dining room had people seated. The waiter was attentive in the beginning taking our order, serving the bread, but after the entrees arrived, he literally disappeared. He was pleasant enough, but apparently with so little business to attend to, he simply forgot about us.
The sole and veggies were so drenched in oil it was hard to taste anything else. My friends veggies were overcooked and over oiled.
The lobby, bar area, and dining room are lovely to look at--really very lovely, but maybe stop in for a drink only; I wouldn't eat here again. Too many good restaurants in the city.
We had dinner at the café Majestic not only for New Year's Eve but a first date. We both found the menu had lots to choose from and was very diverse. We chose something off of the chefs selections and were very satisfied with it. We also found the wine list to be very good and reasonably priced. Our experience I Cafe Majestic was perfect.
Our reservations were for 7:00pm Christmas Eve. We showed up at 6:45 and waited until 7:15 when we insisted they let us sit at an empty table ( of many!) We waited until 7:30, but no one came to even take a drink order. So I ran down a server and asked him if he thought they could serve us in the next hour because we had a church service to go to. He was polite and honest and said no. With apologies! So we left.
When dining with little ones, you rely on the restaurant staff as your "back up".
We had friendly greetings at the front of the hotel. Our waiter David K. went above and beyond to make sure
that our glasses were always full and our children received everything they needed. We were there for Thanksgiving dinner and the dining room staff were all kind and amusing to our toddlers.
I look forward to returning to the Cafe when it's not a holiday to check out the shops in nearby Japantown.
