Cafe Mahjaic - Lotus Inn Ratings and Reviews
Second time at this restaurant and a little disappointing. Had great food the first time, this time a little inconsistent. Pork was bordering on burnt, Yellow Tail fish not so great. Greens salad seemed to have very little in it other than lettuce and almost no dressing. Chocolate decadance type dessert was very good -- cookie that came with it was flavorless. We really liked the four course fixed price menu. We understand they're revamping the menu and turning into a more casual beer/food type venue -- don't we have enough of these type of casual beet type place already?
We love this old brick building and the food is always good. Seasonal fare this time included butternut squash soup which was very tasty. The coq au vin was delicious! Butternut squash ravioli were good as was the chopping. Service was a little slow as there were quite a few diners for a Thursday night with only one server. Desserts were delicious!
I love café Mahjaic! I hadn’t been there in a couple years and was pleased to discover the food is as good as it was the few times I have been there in the past. I think the chef is masterful with his use of spices and seasonings! My only complaint is that while the crème brûlée was wonderful, it was made with espresso and having finished dinner at 7 o’clock I wasnt able to fall sleep till 4:00 AM! I would have appreciated being forewarned that it had that much caffeine in it.
Food and atmosphere were fine, but we were not served our salad appetizer or dinners until 90 minutes after we sat down. The restaurant was perhaps 2/3 full, so it wasn't a busy night. With a 6 year old child in tow, who was extremely well behaved the entire time, I would have thought they'd be more attentive. It has been our favorite place to recommend to friends, but now I will suggest elsewhere.
We love this gem of a restaurant! A small, elegant space with tablecloths, flowers and tea lights. Lovely hardwood floors. An older building, lovingly cared for. Attention to detail evident everywhere. The staff were friendly and sweet, which made our evening. The food, as always, was a taste treat. Every bite was tasty, the meat tender, the vegetables perfectly seasoned and cooked. I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. It’s a bit out of the way, but it’s a lovely drive up Hwy 49 to Coloma and then to Lotus. We usually take these back roads for the scenic drive.
Nice to have a finer dining option in our little town of lotus. Compliments to the owner and chef for bringing this kind restaurant to a area that typically would have limited support. Five stars for the food, ambiance and atmosphere.
The front end of the restaurant needs a bit of fine tuning. Service lacked personality and were very rushed. We waited over a hour from the time of our reservation to the time we received our apitizer. All together it took three hours. That's a bit long for a four course meal.
Relaxing, don't be in a hurry! This is a great place to converse with family and friends
enjoying a historic surrounding from the gold rush days. We enjoy the creative menu

Take time to do dinner with Mahjaic.
We've been to Cafe Mahjaic many times and are never disappointed. This was a Wednesday night birthday. The service was excellent and accommodating. The restaurant had other of our friends as diners and a wedding party. A very happy evening. The waiter recommended the Truchard Chardonnay and it was great!
Living in SF we are used to a higher quality of food, but Cafe Mahjaic surpasses this and more. The food is original, interesting and most of all excellent, and our waiter was fantastic. We watched our waiter have the most patience with two elderly couples, who I would say were a pain in the rear end, with regards to ordering wine. The fuss they made would have pushed some waiters over their patience, but not this guy. He was patient and respectful. Good local wine list and local wines. We ordered off the 4-course menu and added a bowl of their Greek soup to share. Both of us ordered something different and we shared. Each bite was beyond our expectation. I would highly recommend Cafe Mahjaic.
This is a great hidden little place in the foothills. Food is superb and very reasonably prices. They offer a 4 course dinner for $37.95 per person. Good wine selection although wish they offered more local to El dorado county wines.
This place is a best kept secert of fine dining.
The service was fast, the waiter was very attentive and the food was great.
We had to wait a long while for our check at the end of the meal, but in their defense a few large parties arrived and they only have two food servers.
My recommendation is to go early if you want to be fast; on the other hand you go to this place for an experience it is not Dennys.
Our reservation was at 7:00 pm and we were not seated until 7:15. They did not take our order until 7:45 and the appetizer was served at 8:10! Over an hour at the table with NO FOOD (Except bread).
You need 2 waiters NOT 1. The buser made no eye contract and only filled up the water upon request.
Either the cook was slammed, short handed or the waitress was slammed but the service was SLOW SLOW SLOW. I will not wait a n hour and 10 minutes for an appetizer again. Sorry. The staff were nice but need help in customer service or add employees.
We experienced a wonderful anniversary dinner: fabulous chef, stellar server (thanks Dana), and a meal that was worth every cent. I certainly don't know what those one and two star folks are about (maybe just hard to please types), but we would recommend this to any family or friends wanting to experience the exquisite menu offered here. Will definitely be returning.
I love this restaurant. This is my second visit, not as magical as the first visit, but still my new favorite restaurant. Don't come here if you are in a hurry, with a small kitchen and a small staff we've had to wait to be seated as orders get backed up, but the food, OMG the food is worth the wait! I say this visit was not as magical only because we knew what we were getting into the second time around. We ordered the four course meal, had saganaki and bruacshetta both way different than anything we'd ever had, explosions of complementary flavors. I prefer the Mahjaic salad to the Caesar (which I found a little over the top on anchovy flavor). Our entrees, sun dried tomato ravioli and the sea bass fish special were stunning. This chef puts so much creativity into the various dishes and they virtually explode with numerous complementary flavors. Topped off with espresso creme brulee - another OMG.
Our very nice waitress comped our corkage fee in return for the wait. I wish the menu was larger so we could order two new things for every course new every time, but of course I can't expect that. I expect to return many times in the future. Be well my new favorite restaurant!
All four of us enjoyed our meals. There are interesting choices on the menu and the meals are presented with attention. I had a ravioli special which was delicious. My only suggestion applies to the wheel chair access. My wife is temporarily in a chair and it wasn't easy getting into the restaurant.
It was wonderful! The food was outstanding. I had the lamb porterhouse which was cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth. The four of us ate special apitizers; a tomato salad with a basil puree that was truly remarkable; and whatever our server gave us. It was a wonderful evening. We ended up closing the place!
This was our 2nd time here. First time was a great experience and we ordered off the Pre Fixe menu. We did the same this time. We waited exactly 1 hour and 8 minutes for our first dish which was literally 1 prawn so not sure why it took so long. We then waited 20 minutes for the salad. It was torture! We still had the entree and the dessert to go. Total time for us to get all of our food and pay the bill was 2 whole hours. :-(
