Latest of over perhaps 20 meals at Cafe Lux, usually before Lincoln Center performances. We are big fans, and the restaurant has been delivering a consistently high dining experience for many years. Our latest trip was a little sub-par. The restaurant changed its computer system and lost our seating preference, which was a disappointment. Our waiter was willing but very inexperienced, generally not familiar with the menu or wine list. We both started with the octopus appetizer, which was very good. Then we had the salmon (very undercooked but no time to send back with the curtain looming) and the loup de mer (decent but not up to prior standards). The pre-theater prix fixe is a decent deal and we paid $84 pp, including coffee, 3 glasses of wine, tax and tip. We will return to Cafe Lux and trust that they will resume their reliably high standards.
I was mystified to get a report from you that I had "points" for
attending Cafe Lux. What are these for? How do I use them?
You don't explain anywhere. Why is that?
It was drafty and cold near our table next to the exit sign.
Food was ok our waiter ( don’t remember his name ) was attentive and friendly .
Crowded, noisy, nice staff. Food varies. Fish dishes seem to have been prepared ahead of time & then heated, a bit dry & flat. Ice cream sundaes are the best we've had anywhere, ever.
We have been to Cafe Lux sooooo many times- our favorite place in the neighborhood. The most favorite manager left for a goat farm so we don't feel the personal attention we used to.
We almost always get the same- salad with egg on top for my husband and regular salad for me to start then steak frites for the husband and cheeseburger for me. Always delicious. Unfortunately this time I ordered the burger medium as usual and realized as I was eating it that it was medium rare and waitress confirmed. They very nicely sent out another, but this one ended up worse- rare on the inside and burned on the outside leaving me without much to eat. They were very nice about it and took the burger off our bill. The fries were still OUTSTANDING as always. We know this was a one off incident.
Pre Met Opera dinner, fine service and delicious food presented beautifully .
Our friend lives nearby and joined us for dinner; she suggested the restaurant. We were seated right away. Our waiter had a fabulous smile and was delightful and knowledgeable about the menu. One of us had the steak tartare and devoured it. Another of us had the ribeye special, which he pronounced perfectly cooked. Another of us had a hamburger and salad. Each dish was perfectly prepared, hot things hot, cold things cold, the seasoning was spot on. The cocktails were great. I love this place and look forward to returning. It is a classic and it's a classic for a reason. Everyone who works there is excellent at his or her job.
Loud, crowded, fun and great food - Sunday brunch celebrating a friend's birthday. It was perfect! Great New York vibe! I would definitely recommend - can't wait to go back!
I had the most wonderful experience this past Sunday . I was an hour early for my reservation, the incredible hostess sat me and my guest as we waited 45 minutes for our guest. We weren't hassled to order, to drink, or to get up from our table with any time frame. Unbelievable. The service was great, my omelette was delicious.
