This is one of our go-to restaurants in NYC. The food is always good but I have to say the portions have gotten small recently.
Great place to eat. Same as 25 years ago. Love it every time
Grandmas birthday was great! She wanted Maine lobster and had it with green sauce! The music was great.
We enjoyed a very pleasant evening with our adult grandchildren!
The food was excellent as was the service. It was a great choice for a pre-theater meal.
Excellent food and excellent service
Like the setup in the restaurant. Food is flavorful and very much enjoyed by our company. Not too crowded but seems like a nice place for friends get-together or dates!
I took the sons of a few friends of mine as well as their friends. Most of them were not familiar with Spanish cuisine. They're big fans now! Jamon Serrano, chorizo, manchego, fillet mignon tips and stuffed peppers to start. That was followed by a paella for six people that was cooked to perfection. The staff are very attentive and professional. A guitar player went from table to table, adding to the fun. If you like authentic Spanish cuisine, Cafe Espanol is the place.
This place was worth the price. Drinks were good, tapas amazing!
Really great service, great Sangrias, and a serenade guitar player walking around! Food was nothing special...might come back on a Monday for their Lobster specials....and the Sangria!
The most unfortunate thing about this experience was that a particular salad attractively described on their web site was not on the menu. When that was mentioned to the staff they volunteered to produce it but, sadly, the end product did not in any way resemble the item described on the web site. However, a really nice moment was when, as we were leaving, a very distinguished gentleman, possibly the restaurant manager, or even owner, thanked me in words that seemed really genuine, coming out of his heart, not just polite standard thank you's. Perhaps he was a very good actor but if so, good for him!
The food was very good, until my bf got a spoiled mussel on is paella. Unfortunately he ate it and he had to run to the bathroom. We told the waitress and the Manager.
We expected they would have not charged us the paella or at least give us the dessert for free but..nothing! The waitress even came to ask us for the tip (that of course we didn’t leave!!). So rude!
So beside the bad experience, I can say the place is nice and has a lot of good food and authentic.
I mean it is something that can happen but it was the (wrong) way they handled it wrong.
I have been eating at Cafe Español since 1995 and I am never disappointed when I dine here. This is truly a neighborhood gem! The food is fresh and delicious, they make their own sangria which is the best sangria I have ever drank and the staff is friendly and efficient. I highly recommend the paella, skirt steak and fajitas. They have a tapas menu as well that offers scrumptious delights such as various cheeses, mussels, shrimp and mich more Spanish meals.
Cafe Espanol is part of the Olde New York scene. it's not been renovated, it's not screamingly loud. It serves a very diverse crowd, both agewise, culturally, ethnically.
The lobster was terrific, as was the grilled octopus starter. With a nice bottle of Martin Codax albarino, we were delighted.
We also used a groupon which saved 20% for the first visit when using your visa card to sign up.
Go. We can't afford to lose all of Olde New York.
Lovely! Food is great - portion size excellent
Awesome restaurant. Food was great, very generous portions and reasonably priced. Fun and friendly staff. Service was very attentive. Look forward to returning again!
We had been back MANY times ever since and it had replaced our former number one restaurant (Trattoria Spaghetto - which is now back to being our NUMBER TWO restaurant). What has made the place special was NOT only the food but the entire wait staff! Sergio/waiter and with the owner (Sebastian F. ) along with the rest of the staff made it a friendly, festive, party atmosphere and made you feel at home and part of a true "family". We have celebrated our family Christmas Eve &/or Christmas dinner for MANY years and many more to come.
Food used to be much better. Unfortunately this time everything was over cooked. Grilled octopus was charcoaled, chewy fried calamari, medium-rare stake was well done. Vine and drinks were excellent.
We stopped in before going to the Blue Note and had drinks and tapas.
It was very early so the restaurant was quiet. Service was great. Not intrusive but ready to take care of all our needs. Perfect.
Second time visit and enjoyed the whole experience both times.
Food was great. Had the seafood paella with fried calamari appetizer... delicious. Wife really enjoyed the red sangria. Our waiter Roberto was super. Will be back on our next visit to NY.
Delicious food and Sangria - very good value - but we were seated at 6:05 and unfortunately felt like we were being rushed the entire time. 4 people with salads, appetizers, Sangria and main courses ... and were done by approx 7:10. I probably would have had a Spanish Coffee but I was asked three times in 5 minutes if we were done or ordering anything else while I had the dessert/cafe menu in my hand. Other than this aspect (throughout dinner), the server was polite and helpful —- but we were definitely being rushed by the server and the wait staff.
The host/owner needs to smile! And be nice!
If you are looking for an excellent restaurant with a full and varied menu, Cafe Espanol has exquisite tasting food and wonderful service. We go there whenever we are in the Village.
Great food, Great service, authentic cuisine- love this place and they are great with children too
Ughh. The paella Valenciana was tasteless and WATERY. The dish consisted of chicken that was merely chunks of dry skinless breast, undercooked scallops and over cooked previously frozen shrimp. There was no taste of saffron nor any evidence of the traditional socarrat crust. Service was slow and the decor is in need of an overhaul. Bathrooms are ancient. I would not return nor recommend this restaurant.
Excellent for tapas and sangria. I've been coming here since they opened in the 70's and the food is always very fresh and authentic. Their waiters are professionals and provide excellent service.
Bad food -over cooked lobster.
One of my favorite places to eat in NYC for almost 20 years.
For those of us on restricted diets, a wide range of tapas, specializing in seafood, was the perfect choice. Our party of three ordered five tapas plates. We all left satisfied with both quantity and quality of the food. The seafood was well seasoned with excellent sauces. The grilled calamari was a little on the chewy side, but that was to be expected. We'd definitely go back to sample more of the menu.
I had a great dinner with friends. Paella, fish, stuffed fish, and lobster were all excellent. We started with Spanish ham, cheese and sausage, filet mignon tips and octopus. All excellent. The staff is very attentive and a guitar player came by and we all sang a few songs. A great time.
Dined in the beautiful courtyard (heated). Many delicious menu options to choose from. Excellent, attentive service.
back outdoor patio lovely to be in on a warm fall day
Worst Paella I've ever had
Service was great but food only average.
A nice Spanish menu restaurant. Very nice outdoor patio seating area in the back. Not crowded, lots of open space even on a Friday evening. Service was prompt and cordial, cocktails were good, food was served promptly and was tasty. Everything was "good" but nothing was "great."
It was much better a few years ago , the food, the ambience and the cleanliness of place
We were seeing a show and went for dinner not knowing they have a Lobster special on Mondays. My husband ordered the 2 lb. lobster and I had the 1 1/2lb. lobster. They were the best lobsters we have had in years including our visits to Maine. If you like lobster it is worth a trip to Cafe Espanol. We have been here many times in the last twenty-five years and have always had a great meal. The Spanish potatoes are unbelievable. The wait staff is always great.
Beautiful ,Spanish restaurant with fine service in the village area.
Menu offers delicious choices--(including basic grilled fish and vegetables)
My family loves this restaurant ,and I am never
The steamed Lobster was absolutely sumptuous .
Others in our group loved the traditional Spanish meals.
Don't miss the sangria!
Amazing food, amazing service. Definitely will be returning.
The worst dinner experience.
Terrible food. The chorizo advertised as spanish is no other than regular oscar meyer hot dog
