Cafe Don Jose - Temple Terrace, FL Ratings and Reviews
The service in the lounge and in the dining room was excellent. Everyone was very accommodating, friendly and welcoming. We were a group of 14 celebrating an elderly friend's birthday and we certainly enjoyed ourselves. Of course, as always, the food was superb!
Don Jose makes the best Paella in town!!!!! The wine suggested by our server turned out to be perfect with the Paella. I am a California wine drink, however, I was pleasantly surprised by this Chilean Chardonnay!!! Great recommendation! Kudos to our Server!!!!
My wife and ate on February 13th and we both ordered for the specials of the evening. I cannot remember the names of the dishes. Hers had chicken and two scollops with a cream sauce and I have a dish where the meat was rolled with ham, Swiss cheese and more meat with a mushroom gravy on top. We both order the twice baked potatoes and side salad. Our meals were just ok, but because they were so expensive I would say it was on the verge on terrible. The salad was good and made to order. My meal was $32 and my wife's was $25. Ago, the meal was not worth the cost. The best part of the evening was the server. Very knowledgeable and said he has worked there for 14 years. I would not recommend to friends nor will we go back.
I used to go to Cafe Don Jose, very often at its first location, when they moved to their own and beautiful new building, i really think Cafe Don Jose needs to improve the ambience with more music, shows, guitarist, flamenco, live music, something to bring more customers in, it has all the potential to be more successful like other restaurants that are doing It, like Cafe Ole, Ceviche, Acropolis, price wise, it is no cheap, prices are up, but I wouldn't mind if there were some entertainment of some source, it is extremely quiet! It is a Spanish restaurant after all, it need to be happier, it was a Friday night, we went there with friends, I had read that it was under new management, violinist and all, so we said great! It was not what they had advertised.
I haven't been there for several years. Decided to celebrate my birthday at Café Don Jose. Used to be one of my favorite restaurants. We had the Trout Ala Russa and Filet Salteado (doubtful the meat was filet). Neither one as good as it used to be. Even the bread was not as good as it used to be. The service was excellent.
Although the special sea bass was good, the service efficient, and so forth, the place seems to be in decline. Prices were high, portions were smallish, and there was a tired feel. Perhaps it was because it was late on a weekday. I would return, but this time I was disappointed.
Have been a patron of this restaurant for 35 years. This was once a white table cloth establishment. It has been on a downward spiral for at least the last three. Pretty much since the move up 56th street. First let me say the wait staff is still first rate but the food is no longer fantastic. They have changed the recipes omitting wine in the yellow rice and Pialla, but the prices haven't gone down, food was ok, but seafood was way over cooked. Cheaper bread too. Only the salad shined and you could tell they scrimped. The worst part was the flaminco show. Apparently they put it in to lure tourists( like the Columbia), but unfortunately the stage acts like a megaphone so don't expect pleasant conversation while dining while the show goes on. The guitarist is talented though. My wife said she wouldn't strike it from our list yet as neither of us had steak, but we'll make sure not to go on flaminco nights. We chose it this time from a list of three restaurants we like as it was our anniversary and we wanted a romantic quiet dinner. So much for that. We'll going to Iverone's to make up for it.
The Café Don Jose was suggested as a place for a dinner/business meeting. We had a party of 10 which they accommodated without any problem. We each needed separate checks(for expense accounts)and that was handled efficiently and without problem. The food was authentic Cuban/Spanish and was delicious. Everyone enjoyed their meal. We were in the room where the classical guitarist was playing. It was beautiful music and not so loud that you couldn't carry on a conversation. This could be a romantic dinner any night of the week!
Went for a lunch of Tapas...and to introduce my girlfriend to the cuisine. We had the Ceviche Sampler, which was delicious... although I thought the portions were a little less than generous.. The Albondigas, very tasty, and the sauce was yummy! Crab Cakes... very very good... and a nice size. The Don Quixote puffs seemed like an interesting combo... so I ordered those also. Very good! The chorizo in them was excellent... highly recommended. Normally we do not do deserts (I prefer to make them for us) but we did try the Tres Leches cake... and it was very well done! Delicious, moist and well presented (my GF's new favorite!) Service was very good (Christa?) and all personnel were attentive and polite. We will be back!
I selected Cafe Don Jose based upon a friend's recommendation-WOW!
The traffic was horrific and we arrived over an hour after reservation time and were
greeted with a smile and seated promptly. (I had anticipated a bit of traffic delay and posted it at time of reservation)
Our server was delightful, offered explanations and suggestions...made the entire experience more than pleasant.
The meal was wonderful: sangria refreshing, gazpacho savory and mildly spiced; the seafood casserole was very tasty and good quality components; the tuna (special) was cooked perfectly with a delightful soy-ginger reduction..yummy with perfectly steamed veg side dish. Only regret is no room for dessert, but what a great reason to make another visit!!
Tampa has many Spanish restaurants and Café Don Jose is the best! Every dish on the menu is good, but the trout Rusa is so outstanding that I have trouble ordering anything else. The staff is warm and welcoming; this restaurant is our "Cheers". We feel as though everyone knows our name. The dark bread and the salad are reasons enough to come here. The bread, salad, and black bean soup make a fabulous lunch.
The dinner experience at Cafe Don Jose was very much enjoyed. Our food was served hot, salad and bread were great, the Cream Brule was wonderful. We were lucky to see the Flamingo dance and hear the live music that enhanced our dinner time. Service was a bit slow but the waiters gave their best to meet the needs of all the guest in the room. My first visit to Don Jose was in the seventies, as a long time customer I look forward to continued excellent food and fun.
