We usually eat at La Presse whenever we visit San Francisco. It is really near Union Square, but a bit off the beaten track. Friendly, cafe ambiance and good wholesome food, not over the top, but always interesting

This is a cafe run like a Frensch cafe by a Fresnchman who delivers the authentic experience. The waitservice is professional (not surly college students), the food is the real thing: bistro fare.

Food was good but service was spotty even though it was slow. We had to flag our server down to get our check. Ambience is very nice, cute French cafe with the most amazing croissants.

Cafe de la Presse was my default French restaurant in San Francisco. Conveniently located, bistro food and servers with French accents. A bit of Paris for this Francophile. I have been going there for years, always ordering the same things--lettuce salad and duck. Service was alwys good and food reliable. No longer!

My most recent visit changed my mind. The host, a tall slender young man with dark hair, was in full French conversation when we arrived to a 50% full restaurant. He ignored me until his conversation companion departed for her table. I thought he could have acknowledged me by saying "Hello, I will be right with you" which is customary. Then, instead of being given a table near the bar (that I asked for via Open Table) we passed many empty tables to descend to the big room that I do not like.

Our server took her time getting to us, but I figured she was busy. I had not been served by her before. When taking our orders she seemed distracted. After soup and salad there was a very long wait for the main course. The bread we asked for did not arrive. Wine and water glasses were empty during this time. Finally she arrived to say that the duck was taking a long time to cook and delayed the meal. I know the duck is prepared early in the day and heated before serving so she lied. After another wait the host appeared bearing our dinners. He apologized that they had been served to the wrong table!

My duck was tough as though it had been cooled and reheated; also over-salted--an insult to French cooking. In addition, we had to ask another server for the bread that had never arrived. Even worse, we had to remind our server for wine. We did not bother to ask for more water because we did not want to stay any longer.

When paying over $100 per person for a casual meal one expects it to be good. In Paris this would be easy. In Cafe de la Presse this may not be possible. Quelle tristesse.

I've eaten at this restaurant a few times and have enjoyed it. The food is good, but not fantastic and its overpriced. On our recent visit, the service was horrible. We had a 11:30 lunch reservation and unfortunately arrived early and the restaurant refused to seat us because breakfast ends at 11 and lunch begins at 11:30. There were other customers in the same boat. When 11:30 rolled around, seating began, but it still took 15 minutes for us to be seated and we were the first customers to arrive with a 11:30 reservation. Table service was exceptionally slow as well. Several of the wait staff called in sick which was understandable, however the waitress we had was just plain slow!

Cafe de la Presse is a great place to go while shopping downtown, or going to a lecture or concert diwntown. Great atmosphere, like being in a Paris bistro. Casual, great for afternoon tea or a coffe.

Disappointed, looking forward to great dinner on Christmas Day. Service was lackadaisical, slow, meal was just ok, but $51.00 for rack of lamb seemed high even for San Francisco, wine hugely overpriced. Guess they were taking advantage of many restaurants being shut. Will not go back.

I’ve been dining at Cafe de la Presse for over 25 years and always enjoy my meal and service. It’s my “go-to” spot when I’m in the neighborhood and my “destination” place well worth the trip into SF.

It was supposed to be a five course prix fixe Christmas Eve dinner. The cost seemed high but since it was Christmas Eve we decided to go for it. The waiter, Mark, at first appeared to be nice and friendly. We ordered cocktails, made our selections for appetizers and entree and a short while later our drinks were served. Then the first serving came. The entree came next after a slightly longer wait. Finally the desert arrived after an even longer wait. Then the bill. We were surprised because we only received 3 courses. Our waiter only checked in on us once after the first course, never filled our water glasses, never asked if we wanted another glass of wine or cocktail and never asked if we needed anything. The restaurant is not very large but all tables were occupied. There were two or three waiters in addition to ours and they appeared to be servicing their tables well. I had to confront our waiter about the courses that were not served, the ones being the actual fist course and the last course. He acted surprised that we did not get them even though the waiters were the only ones serving their own tables, no helpers serving food. He asked if we still wanted them. No apology, no adjustment to the bill. This is just terrible service and at just under $100 per person for the food, not including drinks this is totally unacceptable.

The food took forever to make. Once ready it was beyond overly salty. having lived in PAris I was spoiled by "real" French food, not overly priced fake French food as experienced at this cafe. Stay away.

We come to this restaurant a lot and have for years. We came Christmas eve in 2016 and had a great meal from their regular menu, which we love. We arrived this year for our Christmas eve reservation and were handed a special Christmas eve menu where regular main course plates started at $50! Outrageous and downright gouging. No regular menu available and we had no knowledge of this ahead of time. We wanted to leave the moment we realized this, as neither Open Table nor Cafe de la Presse notified us ahead of time of a special menu for that night. We booked weeks in advance and had we known about this, would've chosen a different restaurant. Not recommended for any special holiday dinner. This experience really soured me on Presse. Lost a lot of respect for them that they would charge these insane prices for a basic main course plate, nothing else included. Not sure I'll ever return. Open Table: you should make it a policy that restaurants inform you so that you can notify your clients if there is a special or limited occasion menu on a certain night. Or make it policy that they notify clients in advance. This was really bad.

We had a lovely Christmas Eve dinner there. We had the prix fix menu and enjoyed it very much.
There is a real French Bistro feel to this place, and it has a cozy, intimate atmosphere.
Highly recommended for a special night out.

Poor service beyond our primary server. Food was very good when served hot but a couple of plates appeared to have been held. It seemed like the restaurant just had a bad night and may have been without some key staff. I’ve had lunch and dinner here several times and liked it enough to choose it for a special family occasion so hopefully this was just an aberration.

This was our second visit to Cafe de la Presse. Unfortunately, the menu was limited, the food cold and without much interest. The crab cake was nice but accompanied by a rectangle of squash. The onion soup was nice but not very rich. The halibit came from a steam table. The mussels were cold with a cream sauce and apple? A nice piece of cheese was served with a romaine lettuce leaf and garlic bread toast? The atmosphere reminded me of a French bistro, but the food was unforgettable (bad).

When I made the reservation, I requested a table in a certain location downstairs where it is quieter. We were seated elsewhere and were very unhappy about how noisy it was. I asked the waiter to change our table to the location I had originally requested, and he did so willingly. However, it seems like a waste of time to ask customers to make specific requests if they are not going to be read and honored. Other than the table, the food and the waiter were good.

The food was just ok. The salad was too cold, like it was made hours ago and put in the cooler for too long. The crocque madame was small and too thick with sauce. I wanted home fries but they insisted it was an upcharge over the regular french fries - seems odd and cheap on their part as other patrons were enjoying their real potatoes. I would have liked to have been offered mustard or harissa, 2 hallmarks of classic french restaurants, to go with my my breakfast. In the end, it is more style than substance here - an expensive yet mediocre meal.

Afterwards, we saw our friends sitting outside. We joined them and they waited as multiple tables sat after them were served and completed their meals. The service was so slow and the food, again, was not special at all. It only takes a little attention to make ok food better, mostly the knowledge of the staff, and a committed ownership who will invest on good products and training

I cannot wait to visit this spot again. The food was fantastic and very authentic French style. Everything about the restaurant, especially the sidewalk seating, made you feel like you were in a bistro in France. I particularly enjoyed the pastries. The service was great, too.
