This place is constant, excellent simple French food, young American only and english speaking only staff, huge turn over probably due to management style, is quiet nice. The bistro atmosphere is where I go when I have an acute Americanitis crisis, simple wine and cocktails, nothing fancy but good for the soul.
They use to have French newspaper, Le Canard Enchaine and Le Monde, but they don't anymore, remains a few magazines, it is unfortunate as this was my point of contact for French media.
Nothing special and pricey for a simple bistro dinner.
Delicious French comfort food, comfortable ambiance. Wife and I were looking for a French restaurant near ACT Geary and Curran theatres and found this gem near Union Square. We made a dinner reservation for a 5:30 PM as we had theatre at 7 PM. We arrived early and found that the bar was open where we could have a drink (and there was also a bar menu which seemed quite good). We were seated in the dining room promptly as it opened. The dining room was spacious and comfortable. The menu was classical French comfort food including escargot, steak tartare, onion soup, foie de gras torchon, duck confit, boef bourgignon, etc. There is also a good selection of steaks and sea food. There is a full bar- their “special” cucumber martini was a bit strange, but the regular martini was very good. We had Caesar salad, charcuterie board of 3 (Rillette de Canard, Rosette de Lyon, and Soppresseta), and I had the confit de canard Maison and wife had the day’s special, coq au vin. The food was altogether delicious and very French and very satisfying. Wife thought the cog au vin was the best she had, and my rillet and confit were outstanding. The service was prompt, courteous, and professional. This will probably become our go-to place when we come to the theatres.
Brunch was ok, food was not spectacular we ate French toast and an egg dish. Our waitress was nice, and took our order fast but we felt like we were being held hostage because we sat for over 20 minutes after our plates were cleared with out getting our check. We kept trying to flag someone down for the check, when we finally got the check, it took a while for her to process it. I have never experienced anything like it. For this reason, I would not return to this restaurant.
Consistently high quality french bistro cuisine
Great food, prompt and friendly service.
Poor service, so-so food.
Buen servicio con un muy buen sazón y tamaño de platos adecuado. Buena carta de vino
As French a breakfast experience as you can get in San Francisco. We had cafe au lait, an almond croissant, and eggs benedict ... all pretty good. Service was friendly, but a bit chaotic (on a busy Wednesday morning). It took interactions with three or four people to be seated. Anyway, thumbs up!
The staff was rude and inattentive so after 20 minutes we left.
we've been coming here for years, as a family (with french relatives). always a pleasant experience.
The cheese plate was a great starter and our server was very friendly and helpful but when my salad arrived and I took a bite, they had left a large grape stem in it and this was quite unappealing. They were very nice and comped my salad but the food was only average and I am not sure I would return with all of the other great food in the city.
excellent. authentic French atmosphere. good for small family parties, business or friends lunch or dinner. Consistently good food.
We got together with friends. The waitress was attentive but not hovering and we weren't rushed. The food came quickly. Overall it is a great friendly atmosphere.
Friends from out of town
Wonderful weekend brunch!
Stellar service, delectable food and the Salade Bressane was divine, robust in flavour and taste. It was so refreshing having a lunch that was healthy and lean compared to some of the naughty meals I had during my stay in San Francisco.
If you are vising or have never been, I would strongly recommend going. Add this bistro to your "must dine" list.
Great visit for breakfast. Was seated promptly in a nice corner table for a business breakfast. Staff is very warm and service was prompt and on the mark. Have also been for brunch a few months back with a large group, again which they handled very nicely.
Overall it was ok. Didn’t care too much about the location of the table.
The steak I order was just satisfactory and the waiter kept missing up our order when placing them on the table....he seemed very distracted.
I’ve eaten here before and the food was good this time not so good.
Completely beyond expectations. Delicious food, friendly service, and prices are reasonable. Nice atmosphere too.
Also kid friendly. I’ll definitely be back, with and without the kids.
Very nice dinner; halibut prepared superbly and very appealing mild citrus sauce.
Very friendly service. Had a reservation and did not have to wait for our table once we arrived. The tuna nicoise salad was delicious.
We ate lunch here. The menu is fairly traditional French and there’s a bit of everything. Salads, soups, entrees, sandwiches. We had a window table downstairs which was very nice and quieter than upstairs. The food we ordered was fine, nothing outstanding. The onion soup, Niçoise salad and duck salad were all good, not great. The gem salad was only so-so. It’s the atmosphere that is fun and the restaurant decor is stylish cafe.
Food was good but service was lacking
A throwback to another era. Perfect in every way! Nothing modern here. Just terrific food, well served in an old word atmosphere in the heart of The City.
Love the food at this place but they always make you wait even if you have a reservation. It takes a really long time to get to your table even when it’s not crowded.
So great for Friday lunch! Food surprisingly good, and even a good value. Had seared tuna salad.tuna perfectly cooked, whole avocado, and delish sauce on hard boiled egg. Such a big portion I took half home.my only gripe is website menu prices 20 percent less than actual. Atmosphere lovely and timeless.
When we were there it was fairly quiet, so a great place to relax with great food.
Found this place a few years ago and had such a great breakfast, my kids wanted to go right back the next day. We were in town, so we tried it again and we’re not disappointed. Great breakfast. French toast is the best anywhere. Crisp and yet moist and not heavy. Topped with a blueberry compote - yum. My wife got the excellent croissant egg sandwich.
Ordinarily it’s a good place. On Valentine’s Day they had a mediocre menu with outrageous prices!! Avoid on ‘special’ menu days
Our server was charming and nice but completely overworked. She could not keep up with the peak demand, especially with a very demanding couple next to us, but she kept her smile and spirit. Other than that, food was mediocre and mostly lukewarm. We would not go back.
Top notch !
Very expensive for quality you get
It's just like being a Paris, and I have been to Paris a dozen times.
We are regulars at Cafe de la Presse and the food service and experience is consistently good.
Great lattes and croissants along with a very French menu!
I always enjoyed dining here when I can. Even if I dine alone, it is the best! The server was very kind and helpful and simply the best. Merci for making my dinner with a friend so special. Let do it again soon.
Their website was inaccurate but the food was very good. The staff was friendly and helpful
