Café de France Ratings and Reviews
Excellent with food being the main feature. I wish I could close my eyes right now and have the onion soup and trout before me. Absolutely wonderful. My wife would say the same about the rack of lamb. If it would not have been bad manners, she would have nibbled the last bits off of each bone.
While we usually enjoy eating at Cafe de France, our latest experience was not that enjoyable for the following reasons:
1. They were out of the "fish of the day."
2. My steak was luke warm and not cooked medium as ordered; it was more medium rare.
3. They ran out of asparagus so we were offered green beans as a substitute.
Was very disappointed in both service and food. Our waitress seemed distracted, rushed and offered only perfunctory attention. The food was quite ordinary for the price. We have eaten here since it opened and often recommended it for both food and service. Hope things can improve!
We visited for the first time recently and were impressed with every aspect of the experience from the food to the service and the atmosphere. The service is attentive without hovering. Our server knew the menu in and out and was able to easily answer our questions and offer recommendations. Our cocktails were superb. The food was excecuted perfectly. My wife had the scallops and I had the duck. Both were very flavorful and well played. Unfortunately, we were too full for dessert and opted for coffee instead. We will certainly be back.
New to the area, I had heard of several French restaurants and several recommended by new friends. Not wanting to drive through downtown, we went here since it was closer to home and knew people who enjoyed it. Small but nicely decorated, we planned on three courses and wine. The wine was excellent and the service was good to start. However, the pate and onion soup were bland and our main courses were inconsistent. My wife's scallops were well prepared but the risotto was gummy. My ribeye steak, the evening special was ordered medium rare and turned out to be thinly cut, burnt on the edges and tough. It was seasoned well but that was small comfort. The potato side was under seasoned as well.
We had planned on dessert but after letting our server know about about the the issues with my steak she said she would let the chef know. No apology or explanation was offerred - only a dessert menu. We paid our bill and left. Any cook can have a bad night, or at a bad course. But we were the second table in for the evening service. Not what I had hoped for my birthday.
We won't be back and will likely check out Le Coq Au Vin on Orange Ave. (the most recommended local French restaurant) and fight the cross town traffic in hope of better food.
They have been in Winter Park for more than 30 years, so it's not some place that you're going to fall in love with and it's going to be closed in a year or two. Great French cuisine. Feels like a neighborhood restaurant where you're treated like the valued customer that you truly are. Great food and attentive service.
The food was amazing! I think there were too many tables jammed into the restaurant making it seem louder than it should be. Easily the best French food in Winter Park....if not all of Metro Orlando. The service was attentive and on point. We enjoyed the wine list and found the overall value to be just right.
You know this place is great because its filled with locals. We love going here, and always bring our out of town friends. I recommend by starting with a classic cocktail (which they do very well), followed by either mussels or escargot. (you may want to order more!). Their soups are fantastic too. Wait staff is very nice and take very good care of their guests. Its a small staff, but you will get to know them like family.
Our party was dining late so found this gem of restaurant to be quiet. Server recommend the half-carafe of white and red wine which we found to be very good and ideal for our party. Our party ordered fresh fish (swordfish), seared trout, and duck. Everything very tasty and well prepared. The escargot could have been more garlicky but that was my preference not schared by my party.
My best friend had a happy birthday at Cafe de France last Friday. Service was excellent, and everything delicious. We shared an escargot plate, which was baked in the traditional French way with lots of garlic butter and a warm baguette for dipping. Yum. I had the Coq au Vin, C'est si bon! My friend had the half duck and I hardly heard a word spoken until she finished it! The friendly staff made the dining experience delightful. I love to speak French and Madame, who owns the place was very accommodating with my American French. It was a lot of fun.
We went on a Tuesday evening and it was quiet with only a small number of customers. We sat outside - it was very pleasant - and the service and food was excellent. While the menu is small the choices are great, and all in all we had a wonderful evening with excellent food!
I've been to cafe de France at least 25 times over the last 5 years, and it is consistently the top French restaurant in the area. Nice to still have a small romantic family run restaurant among all of the trendy or chain upstarts. Food is consistently outstanding with a warm French country atmosphere.
My experience at Cafe de France was excellent. We were greeted pleasantly. The fish special was skate, a fish not often seen on menus and very seasonal. It was perfectly prepared, moist and tender. The wine list is very good. It has selections from France, a few other European wines, and a selection from the US. The portions were appropriate. It was a lovely experience.
