Underwhelmed by steak frites— very marbled
Terrible service. Rushed us out. Got order wrong skipping the appetizers. I don’t plan to go back.
Cafe Cluny is always such a treat. Unfortunately this time because we were a 9 pm reservation, it did not seem as great as it normally is. Service felt rushed and not as attentive as usual.
Nice restaurant in a good location away from hustle of city life. Quaint setting and interesting menu.
We ordered the prix fixe dinner (5:30-6:30) before heading to a show.
The choices were extensive. We had the poached lobster (extra $10), it was wonderful.
Our sever explained the dishes which helped us make wonderful choices.
It was quiet at this early hour, which we prefer. This had the feel of a Rue Cler French Cafe.
Fantastic meal, great service, and excellent vibe. Will continue to go back frequently.
We made our reservation stating that it was for a birthday and specified a window table in the back room, where we always enjoy sitting whenever we patronize Café Cluny. We entered about 6PM, the time of our reservation. A young lady with a British accent greeted us. I explained we had a reservation through Open Table. She immediately tried to seat us next to the bar. I interrupted, mentioning we had specified in the reservation that our visit was for a birthday, and a preference was noted for a window table in the back room. At first the lady ignored me but then stated there was a meeting being held in the back room. "I thought you would be more comfortable here," she said, and qualified, "but the meeting is just ending." Then she granted our wish and seated us as requested. I wanted to make sure the birthday was noted in the reservation. The young lady seemed to ignore me until I pressed her on the matter, to which she finally said, "I'll check it." Unfortunately, the birthday was never acknowledged.
Our waitress informed us of the new chef, as it would not be possible to order our favorite dish, the slow-cooked beef short ribs. We found other satisfying dishes however. When I questioned the waitress about my preference for a mellow, soft red wine that wouldn't have intense acidity, she told me the Haut-Médoc would be less acidic than the Pinot Noir. I suspected our waitress got it backwards but decided to go with her recommendation. We waited a very long time to be served bread and butter. Once the Haut-Médoc wine arrived, we started drinking it, only to realize this was not what we wanted. We called for the manager, a very nice tall young man, who confirmed according to our preference, we should be getting the Pinot Noir. He then changed my glass and poured the California Pinot Noir from the bottle itself. The meal was excellent. Unfortunately, to our disappointment, my birthday was never acknowledged.
Cafe Cluny is an exceptional restaurant in NYC. A fantastic neighbourhood find. The food was amazing, the staff was attentive and we had a wonderful reunion there of 4 old friends. I highly recommend the tuna burger and the homemade chocolate chip mint ice cream is to die for.
I loved everything about Cafe Cluny. Steak Frites was amazing as was the short rib. My endive salad was delicious. I didn't want it to end. Profiteroles were excellent and you get three, which is very generous. The chocolate ice cream was more like mousse. I love the decor, the Parisian cafe chairs, the heavy drapes on the windows. Our server was excellent. She allowed us to get the prix fixe three course pricing when we arrived late due to uber driver issue...
So our night wasn't spoiled.
This was the third time we’ve been back but the first for an early dinner w our 2 yr old grandson. And we still had a great time paired with great food and an upbeat and relaxed vibe. Our servers are all always accommodating and especially with special requests for the little guy! Can’t wait to be back soon. Thank you!!
First time at Cafe Cluny
Loved everything about this Casual Chic Cafe
Atmosphere, service, wine, food and company were all perfect!
One of the best Moules Mariniere dishes I have ever tasted
Great fixed price menu that from 5-6 Pm, food was good, service was good, neighborhood and ambiance was fantastic.
Cafe Cluny is a very cute, cozy restaurant in the West Village. The food is exceptional. I had steak tartare followed by the lobster with coconut rice which was a special. The lobster was delicious! We also had a bottle of French brut, and cheeses with bread and honey to end the meal. Everything was fantastic! The prices are pretty high, but overall it was a great experience!
Warm, friendly, tasty food - Cafe Cluny is a great local French-inspired restaurant with a glamorous buzz. It's rapidly becoming one of my local faves!
We had the mussels and snow peas, which were both delicious! Perfect as we werent hungry enough for a full dinner. We then had dessert- banana trifle and chocolate torte. Both were absolutely to die for, though the banana trifle was the best. Definitely will be coming back here! Easy to access, too.
Cafe Cluny is reliably good, and this time was even better than usual. Portions of the menu are in flux while others remain stable offering a welcome balance. The atmosphere is an important part of its appeal; old west village meets old world.
Never disappointed!
Food seems to be going downhill. I’ve been coming here since opening night some years ago. What was once an outstanding frisée aux lardons salad was a major disappointment. Main courses were ok, but not up to expectations. Even the desserts were somewhat “off.” Hope it was just a bad night and not a new standard.
The steak tartare was inedible. To their credit, they removed it from the bill. Otherwise, pleasant as always, but I worry they have a new chef who is wrecking some old standbys.
The food was bland and all mostly tasted exactly the same with the exception of the steak tar tar which had chewy bits and was gross bordering on truly inedible. Both my guest and I were shocked how far this restaurant has fallen and thought they should be ashamed of what they were serving. Skip this!
My go-to neighborhood restaurant - for years! Breakfast, lunch and dinner -
or just a cup of tea and a snack in the afternoon - it's my favorite all-around restaurant in NYC!
(and I eat out A LOT)....
I’ve been going for years but lately - Tiny ungenerous portions in drink and food.
Excellent!
The wait staff and front of house was very friendly. Excellent Food, promptly delivered. The poached egg with my lardons and salad was perfectly prepared.
Great food and service from an awesome bartender! This location was on my GFs list of places to eat and drink. Thanks again!
Food and service great but noisy
Although I adore the location and ambiance, I am always less than thrilled with the food. I find it is not particularly interesting and not particularly good, I’m sad to admit. The tiny hanger steak I received for 30+ dollars was sub par and not flavorful at all. The French fries were also over cooked. The macerated berries that they used to serve came with a huge dollop of fresh whipped cream. This one came with a tiny amount and did not taste fresh. This restaurant is becoming more of a place for a drink than a place I want to have dinner. Over priced for what it is.
rather limited menu....my tuna burger was way over cooked even tho i ordered medium rare. Ambiance and comfort and service though were very very good but way to expensive for quantity and quality of food.
Exactly what I expected, in a good way.
Have loved this place for brunch, but found dinner less inspiring, despite lovely atmosphere. Wine by the glass (a pinot) was so bad we had to send it back, and the steak was so tiny I initially thought they had split if for us (2 people were sharing it), but it was actually just a really small portion, and not cheap.
Delicious food served by lovely people in a most charming country-cottage like atmosphere, Cafe Cluny is my top choice for escaping the noise and craziness of MIdtown to restore calm and reconnect with all that makes life good.
Cozy, yummy, friendly waiter...favorite dinner in NYC all weekend!
Great place in a great location! The food was excellent and felt like I was at someone's home. Our waiter and servers were excellent as well. Standouts include the best and cheese plate with peas and the steak frites.
Thank you!
Great ambience, good food, good service, overpriced.
Wonderful as usual. Eclectic food and crowd. We always bring new people to enjoy the restaurant and they love being there.
I go often to Cluny for special occasions but plan to go more often. It's mostly locals and the entire scene is pleasant. The food was wonderful.
A wonderful little place that feels like your favorite neighborhood restaurant. Comfortable and friendly. The service is a tad underwhelming, but that's ok, the place is so sweet and food is really good and it all feels right.
Was a very enjoyable meal with a colleague.
I almost don't want to write this review because this is such a hidden gem at a quiet street corner. I have never had a bad meal here and can always get a table on short notice - that combination is very rare in NYC. The food is fabulous, the ambience is understated where one can actually have a conversation - even the romantic kind if the situation calls for it. Try it but please don't tell too many friends!
