Cafe Cluny Ratings and Reviews
Went for a birthday dinner. Better choice than most as you can hear yourself talk but this was still a busy place for a Wednesday. My octopus was okay as were one of my friends mussels. His risotto was mushy and overcooked and my scallops were tiny, obviously frozen and tasteless. My other friend had nothing good to say about his ribs. I chose the place as it always looks cozy and inviting when walking by. It was not a complete wash, but it was disappointing and not particularly reasonable.
Very nice find, small, intimate, great food and service. The pre fixe is a particularly good deal - we took advantage of it even though when we made the reservation, we had not been aware that we were dining during the hour it was in effect. It would be delicious at any time!
Service was subpar. More focused on socializing with each other than waiting on patrons. Food was average at best. Not clearly described on the menu, overcooked and absolutely no unsolicited info from the wait staff. I'd be hard pressed to return with so many good options in the neighborhood
We made reservations and my friend arrived exactly four minutes late (I know because we checked). I was there on time. Still, the staff had us wait at the bar for 15 more minutes and proceeded to seat 3 couples who arrived after she did. I even saw them seat one couple who said that they were waiting for the other half of their party to arrive. There is no rhyme or reason to it, and they were dismissive and rude to boot. We also felt that we were rushed out the door by our server, who gave us the check while we were discussing dessert options, then kept coming back to get it even though we hadn't taken out our wallets yet. What was supposed to be friendly brunch with a nice dessert was cut short and felt more like a race.
I enjoyed my brunch experience @ Cafe Cluny. The ambiance was cozy and quaint. It did get moderately noisy, but that was in large part due to the crowd this place seems to draw. That said, I was flanked by people to the R of me and behind, standing/sitting at the bar. Many people were waiting for a table after 11am. To be fair, my friend and I arrived at 11am and left at 1:30, and they never hassled us to get up and leave, which I appreciated. I recommend this place. The food was tasty, though I attribute the pricing more to the fact that this is a West Village eatery. The staff was super friendly and accommodating.
We made reservations for 4, upon arrival on a cold winter night, the only options given to us were the 2 tables adjacent to the entrance. We requested a table either away from the door or towards the back but we were told that they were fully booked and in 20 mins the restaurant will be packed. However, we chose the warmer side which ended up being directly behind the host's station with employees backsides at eye level and inches away from us. At no point did the place fill up with people and others were seated promptly and further away from the entrance. It was a major detraction from otherwise a pleasant experience.
very enjoyable experience. if you can get there before 6:30, the prix fixe offering will save you about $20 a person for the same food. it was a little hectic but we never felt rushed. the quality of the food was excellent, service efficient. We'd return.
Our waiter Michael was a doll. Ambiance quaint. The food - bland and tasteless. Even after our waiter notified the manager/host on duty we watched him shrug in the mirror and not attempt to rectify the barely eaten plate.
Take your business elsewhere for better quality food!
Was really looking forward to Christmas night dinner here.
Lovely cozy charming room. Food ok but very small portions were quite overpriced as was $17 cocktail -- small and weak.
What totally ruined the experience was the service. Drinks arrived with first courses; second courses arrived before salad was finished despite my protestation (response was sad face, a shrug and a comment about "a little overlap in the kitchen") -- plates squeezed onto the table where there was no room -- and then one of the 2 mains was cold and went back to the kitchen anyway.
So one diner was completely finished with her main dish before the other's retuned from the kitchen.
Very surprised not to have been offered comped drinks or dessert at the least.
Christmas dinner at Cafe Cluny was a fine way to cap off the holiday. The ambiance of Cafe Cluny never fails to charm me and Christmas night was no exception. The restaurant was bustling, the waitstaff was a professional as always, and we had a wonderful evening.
The steak frites is one of my favorite dishes and the new presentation is appealing. The asparagus risotto was excellent and beautifully presented. We had the profiteroles for dessert - don't pass them up!
A very pleasant evening.
We were there Christmas day. We were not rushed despite how busy they were. The staff was pleasant. Food presentation was great. One of the best meals we have had in a long time. We had their homemade ice cream for dessert, outstanding. Definitely want to try their brunch
We were greeted warmly by the host who was well aware of the type of table we wanted. We arrived early so we parked ourselves at the bar where we ordered house cocktails that were delicious. Dinner was also excellent and the portions were quite generous. The fries are to die for. The carpaccio was superb as was the mushroom salad appetizer and the burrata with squash and beet chips Our entrees were well prepared as well.
My absolutely favorite! The service, the food, the atmosphere... Cafe Cluny never disappoints. I had the steak and my friend had the tuna burger, both were delicious and our waiter was super fun, friendly and attentive. I HIGHLY recommend!
I loved this restaurant when it opened years ago, and it still is one of the most charming places I've ever been to - a cute corner in the West Village, perfectly decorated and just the quintessential place for a New York date night. But unfortunately, it seems they are now trading on that charm, as the food was such an afterthought - the menu still sounded amazing on paper, but nothing lived up to the ambiance or decor. Everything was pretty, but so flavorless and utterly unmemorable. Really disappointing for what was once one of my favorite places.
Great ambiance, lovely background music that is just the right volume, very attentive and attentive wait staff, delicious food, and convenient distance from the subway. Will definitely consider returning for future meals.
