Cafe Chianti Ratings and Reviews
The decor and menu selection could be classified as outdated by the pessimistic but I prefer to view it as classic and familiar. I feel the restaurant is "owning" the sort of stereotypical Italian restaurant image and doing a darn good job of it, too.
Our waiter was perfect, attentive without being overbearing at all. We were invited to ask any questions we may have had. He was also very gracious about us using a groupon for a discount.
The only flaw was we both felt parts of our meals were slightly overdone - my spaghetti and his risotto were both a bit past al dente but not soft enough to ruin the dish. Everything was very well seasoned and cooked to perfection otherwise. The lemon cheesecake was especially delightful.
Very good food as usual. Had the seafood linguine which is the best. Had purchased a groupon for a meal for two which includes appetizer, main, and desert. It’s important to note that for those you have to pay tax on the full amount of the meals, not the groupon itself so it ends up not being as good a deal as you think. Prices at Chianti are on the high end and food quality is at par with that.
We have dined here before and loved it but this time not so much. On this visit, the service was excellent but some dishes were just ok. We ordered the escargot and calamari to start and while the calamari was delicious, I found the sauce the escargot came in was kind of blah. It needed salt or some zip added to it. We had the seafood linguine and the blackened haddock as entrees. The linguine was good, not great, and the haddock was a thin end piece so while the blackened seasoning made it flavourful, the overall dish was a disappointment. The vegetables (carrot, peppers, zucchini) that came with the haddock were delicious and cooked perfectly. However, for ~$100, We probably won’t go back.
My wife, son, his girlfriend and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Café Chianti on Tuesday evening. It was my wife's birthday and the restaurant staff made it very special including candle lit desert. Two ordered from the "dine around Halifax" menu which was great and offered good value. I enjoyed the lobster bisque, which contained surprisingly large portions of lobster. Initially I thought it was a little pricy at $15, but it was really worth it. My strip loin steak was done to perfection, medium rare. It was tender and had a great grilled flavour. Veggies were hot and crispy. A nice basket of fresh warm bread was provided at no extra charge. I would have enjoyed a little horseradish with my steak, but it was not available. The presentation of the meal was impressive. We took pictures! Overall, the best meal I have had in Halifax recently.
My wife and I had the steak and it was just perfect! the wine was also very good. The only critique I have is the tiramisu was in a small glass and for the price I thought we should have gotten more. It tasted ok but I've actually had better for less money. Overall, though the experience was great and I'd definitely recommend the place. In fact, we already bought a coupon for a couple of our friends who just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
100$ a plate was not even close to being worth it. I was expecting a lot bigger and better quality meats for the price. The taste wasn’t bad just the portions and cuts were not worth 100$ for a meal. I should have went to the Bycycle theif if I wanted to pay money like this and got a real 4 course meal.
We Went on New Years Eve - Expensive fixed menu we were not warned about when we confirmed reservation with restaurant - given poor seating, squeezed in next to bar close to TV and not in main restaurant area.
However, Food was excellent - especially crab cakes and service prompt and friendly. Would go back on a regular menu price day.
It was OK bur my wife's entree was not so good the Seafood Linguini was great as were the appetizers. The desserts were not worth ordering at least the coconut gelato, dry flaky and not a good taste. Wine was fine. A bit of a disappointment this time but will try again as in the past it was much better!
A consistently good restaurant in the south end of Halifax. The proprietors have extensive experience in providing very good food and service in a charming, relaxed atmosphere. There is good choice on the menu and a very good selection of wine. Definitely worth a visit for lunch or dinner. Excellent choice for small groups or dinner parties in a private room secluded from the main restaurant and bar.
First time I was ever there..Won a gift card through facebook and took my son there for his 19th b-day. We both loved it..The food was awesome, very tasteful...The desserts were to die for.....I had a lemon cheesecake and you can actually taste that the lemon was freshly squeezed.. Can't wait to go back!
Okay, but over-rated and over priced. The presentation is very nice, as is the service and atmosphere. It's a great place for dates or intimate dinner with friends. However, there were some very obvious and avoidable errors with some of the dishes.
I had the duck, which was very nicely done at medium rare. The vegetables, too, we're very nice. The risotto was under done with crunchy bits throughout. Not what I would expect from a higher end Italian place.
The spaghetti seafood had fresh seafood, but mushy, not fresh (pre-cooked) pasta. A disappointment at, again, a higher end Italian restaurant.
The brick chicken dish had good chicken--moist and flavorful. However, the potato accompaniment was bland, without seasoning and totally tasteless. It tasted like a warmed over dish from a day or two before. Not good, especially for a... well, you know the rest.
Dessert! Yay! The lemon cheesecake was dry and had an artificial after taste. The flourless chocolate cake and the cheesecake were drizzled with a chocolate sauce that can only be identified as Hersheys syrup. Yes, Hersheys syrup, straight up. Finally, the creme brule lacked the smooth consistency of homemade, and was more like that of a mix from a box. Not good.
Green tea was a local store brand, President's Choice. Although I'm sure the store brand is of the highest quality, it's not what I would expect at a fine dining establishment.
I could go on about the mediocre appetizers, but if you've read this far, you have the idea. Overall, the chef is 'phoning it in' at this place, and not living up to the prices or atmosphere. My advice, savvy diner, is to lay your money and expectations elsewhere.
WE HAVE BEEN GOING TO CAFE CHIANTI FOR YEARS NOW. I PUT ON THE RESERVATION THAT IT WAS OUR ANNIVERSARY. THERE WAS NOTHING EXTRA DONE TO MAKE A SPECIAL EVENING. THE FOOD WAS TASTY BUT VERY OVER PRICED FOR WHAT I ORDERED. THIS WILL BE OUR FINAL VISIT AFTER 10 YEARS OF RECOMMENDING IT.
Cafe Chianti put up a group of 11 doctors from a local university. We were the loudest group there and we're sorry about that. The service was phenomenal. The food was incredible. The ambiance was perfection. They get all the stars on every review. Thank you to the staff at Cafe Chianti.
This was our first time here, came based on reviews when looking for a romantic spot to spend our anniversary. Service was excellent, and sincere. Food recommendations were spot on. Food was terrific. Was a touch on the loud side when the place was full, but overall, we loved this place and would go there again. Not the cheapest place in town, but you get what you pay for.
We enjoyed almost everything about this restaurant except for the noise level. This was due to the fact that there were two large parties enjoying themselves very much when we arrived. The volume precluded us from having a conversation despite the fact we were sitting across the table from each other. Noise aside, the meal was very enjoyable and the service was attentive and deliberate. We would definitely dine here again.
