Cafe Chianti Ratings and Reviews
Okay, but over-rated and over priced. The presentation is very nice, as is the service and atmosphere. It's a great place for dates or intimate dinner with friends. However, there were some very obvious and avoidable errors with some of the dishes.
I had the duck, which was very nicely done at medium rare. The vegetables, too, we're very nice. The risotto was under done with crunchy bits throughout. Not what I would expect from a higher end Italian place.
The spaghetti seafood had fresh seafood, but mushy, not fresh (pre-cooked) pasta. A disappointment at, again, a higher end Italian restaurant.
The brick chicken dish had good chicken--moist and flavorful. However, the potato accompaniment was bland, without seasoning and totally tasteless. It tasted like a warmed over dish from a day or two before. Not good, especially for a... well, you know the rest.
Dessert! Yay! The lemon cheesecake was dry and had an artificial after taste. The flourless chocolate cake and the cheesecake were drizzled with a chocolate sauce that can only be identified as Hersheys syrup. Yes, Hersheys syrup, straight up. Finally, the creme brule lacked the smooth consistency of homemade, and was more like that of a mix from a box. Not good.
Green tea was a local store brand, President's Choice. Although I'm sure the store brand is of the highest quality, it's not what I would expect at a fine dining establishment.
I could go on about the mediocre appetizers, but if you've read this far, you have the idea. Overall, the chef is 'phoning it in' at this place, and not living up to the prices or atmosphere. My advice, savvy diner, is to lay your money and expectations elsewhere.
WE HAVE BEEN GOING TO CAFE CHIANTI FOR YEARS NOW. I PUT ON THE RESERVATION THAT IT WAS OUR ANNIVERSARY. THERE WAS NOTHING EXTRA DONE TO MAKE A SPECIAL EVENING. THE FOOD WAS TASTY BUT VERY OVER PRICED FOR WHAT I ORDERED. THIS WILL BE OUR FINAL VISIT AFTER 10 YEARS OF RECOMMENDING IT.
Cafe Chianti put up a group of 11 doctors from a local university. We were the loudest group there and we're sorry about that. The service was phenomenal. The food was incredible. The ambiance was perfection. They get all the stars on every review. Thank you to the staff at Cafe Chianti.
This was our first time here, came based on reviews when looking for a romantic spot to spend our anniversary. Service was excellent, and sincere. Food recommendations were spot on. Food was terrific. Was a touch on the loud side when the place was full, but overall, we loved this place and would go there again. Not the cheapest place in town, but you get what you pay for.
We enjoyed almost everything about this restaurant except for the noise level. This was due to the fact that there were two large parties enjoying themselves very much when we arrived. The volume precluded us from having a conversation despite the fact we were sitting across the table from each other. Noise aside, the meal was very enjoyable and the service was attentive and deliberate. We would definitely dine here again.
The ambience and service were wonderful. My concerns were the with the food quality and the prices were on the high side. My chicken Parmesan was overdone and at $25.95 over priced as well. My friends lamb braised ravioli was tasty but at $25.95 she thought this was overpriced too. The tiramisu at $11.95 was overpriced for the small portion that was served. It had been my idea to try this restaurant and I should have checked out the menu first so that there were no surprises as well as checked the reviews ahead of time. Thx Barb
Bit of a deception to start, front window shows a table with linen tablecloth, but NO tables inside had them.
What I wished to order was "Sorry, we're all out" (at 7:00 pm) rather early to be running out.
Conversely when the wine I wanted was "out of stock" they upgraded my order at the same cost.
Overall quite respectable.
The menu is northern italian with a maritime seafood focus. It used to be east european specializing in hungarian dishes that were less common. Italian is common in Halifax. I miss those hungarian items like gholash . They should consider bringing some of them back for variety and to differentiate themselves.
was a great dining experience. The scallops are simply delicious. I was adventurous and tried the octopus, I a not a big fan. I am sure they are fantastic, if you like octopus but not for me. My server was great. He knew when to show up and when to be invisible, which is always a good thing when having dinner ad conversation with friends.
This restaurant came highly rated and was an easy walk from the Westin Nova Scotian. Great menu with attentive service staff, and good ambiance. The only negative that kept me from a 5 rating was my cannelloni came very hot and I needed to wait 10 minutes before eating it.
The food was delicious and the atmosphere was lovely. However, the service was very slow at the start and a request for sparkling water was never filled. Otherwise, the waitress was friendly and somewhat knowledgable. Otherall, we thoroughly enjoyed our evening.
Had an excellent meal here - they are an Italian restaurant and they do an exceptional job! Our server was friendly and personable and thoroughly knew the menu and had excellent suggestions when I couldn't decide! My wife and I came for my birthday and the only let down was that OpenTable asks if you have any special request/notes to go with your reservation so for fun I put it was my birthday since that was the occasion. However the restaurant made no note of it at all - by no means an issue because it's just a birthday, but I figured why even ask then? Lol That was minor though - would definitely go again and the whole experience was among the best in Halifax!!
Don't let outside appearance fool you! Cafe Chianti is much bigger inside and is split into two main dining rooms. Great decor adds an authentic flair. Our server was super nice and brought us reading glasses when we realized we'd forgotten ours. Food was superb - would heartily recommend arancini or asparagus starters and the duck for mains. Finished off with super smooth crime brûlée
We went for our anniversary dinner. Originally wanted to go elsewhere, but it was too busy. Luckily we found this gem! It was a lovely place, almost felt like someone's home inside. The dining room was fairly full and, apart from waiting a while to be asked for initial drink order, everything came out quickly once order was in. Food was delicious - we got the calamari to start and for mains got the gnocchi and seafood linguini. The gnocchi was light and tender and the cheesy pomodoro sauce was very flavourful. The seafood in both our appetizer and linguini was all cooked to perfection. For dessert we had the lemon pannacotta, even though we were so full from all but licking our dinner plates, and it was the perfect light addition to finish the meal. All in all would highly recommend this restaurant and happy we ended up here instead of first choice!
We had been to Cafe Chianti before, and returned this time for our wedding anniversary. Because it was Monday night, it was nice and quiet. Our waiter was excellent, helped us to decide what we wanted to eat and was around just enough that we felt looked after without being bothered. the wine was excellent, likely the best caesar salad i have ever had, and both my wife and I had the chicken parm which was delicious. Recommend to any one looking for agreat meal downtown.
My husband and I were on vacation in Nova Scotia, spending the day in Halifax. We decided to eat at Cafe Chianti because I had found a groupon for the restaurant. I'm so glad that we did! The food was excellent and our server was outstanding. I would highly recommend!!
