Caturra on Grove - A New American Bistro
Understaffed. We got our own napkins. Silverware and water. We had to ask twice for our drinks. It was terrible. Food was good. Staff was so overworked
We made reservations, however when we arrived it took quite a while for anyone to approach us for service. Once greeted, we requested an outside table because it was quieter and the weather was fairly nice. Then, it took another 5 minutes for anyone to wait on us, which is how it went all evening. The dinner consumed about 1 1/2 hours which was much too long for the simple dinners we selected. The dinners however were nicely prepared and taste quite fine. For the restaurant being about half full with customers, their service was substandard.
Throughly enjoyable. We went for brunch. Everyone ordered different dishes. Would go back soon
Dined for lunch on a weekday. There seemed to be more servers than customers (maybe 5 tables). Still service was quite poor waiting for drinks, refills, didn't even come back and check to ensure our food was ok. Meal was good, not great. Too much onion in the seafood salad so that's all I tasted all day. Lots of other nice restaurants around the area so I will try something new next time.
One of our favorite restaurants. The food is very good and well worth the price.
The manager indicated they were short-staffed and that was clear after waiting for silverware, getting my salad without the croutons and not seeing our waiter again until it was time for our check.
After 15 minutes of waiting, we were finally able to get a waiter to take our order, despite the restaurant’s being only about half full. Another 20 or so minutes more, and our food arrived. Although it had a good flavor, (My wife and I both had fish) it was not hot, and was quite small. Bill total, including tip, was just under $60, and I only got water to drink. Very disappointed, don’t recommend, and won’t plan to return.
My wife and I enjoy our Saturday late evenings here so much, the atmosphere is so settled in appreciation of the performers, so comfortable in our seats, so pleased with our service and money to value quality of our meals, that I want to keep Caturra on Grove our private spot to talk, visit with friends and steady listen to Chris on the guitar and his eclectic assemblage of friends. probably not your kinda place.
The food as always was very good. Usually the service is also good, however on this occasion, we had a server who seemed distracted. He brought our food as ordered, but had to be reminded to bring water refills and forgot about an additional drink order that was requested. When reminded of it, he said he was sorry and asked if we wanted the check. This was a Sunday evening, and the restaurant was not that busy.
we ate in caturra again one week later and this my copy of my review from yelp from tonight. i noticed the owner does not respond to negative reviews only 3 stars and above- he doesn't seem to want to apologize for the sorry service. good food is wonderful, sorry service kills it. after tonight, we will go elsewhere because after seeing that owner doesn't want to acknowledge it nor his management with the terrible service we got.
first- we have been here several times and the food is very good. tonight, the food was very good....but service was horrible. i could see it was very busy and usually early evening it is not. our waiter was young but we had to go the bar to get drinks. he never came around and refilled water glasses, although he did at a table next to us. we had several people bring food to our table and we asked for drinks, food, etc...it never came unless we walked over to the bar. food is very good, service tonight sucked...terrible. no apologies, nothing...only here is what you ordered 25 minutes ago. caturra, your food is very good and you have a great location...but if you think that your service can be so crappy like tonight and you will stay in business...guess again. being busy and understaffed on a saturday night is one thing, but not saying sorry or taking any responsibility means you don't care about the people who pay for your food...the ones that keep you business.....the customers... and you lost four tonight.
many restaurants in richmond have very good food and service to match...caturra has food covered but our experience tonight told us that we should go elsewhere. i doubt the management will reach out to us because they ignored the sorry service tonight. the jazz trio was very good - we were in the restaurant from 630 till 900 for our dinner which was not our plan.
It was a quiet day so not full at all. Our waiter gave us just the right amount of time to socialize before he took our orders. Large portions so I had a doggy bag for dinner. Such a great neighborhood place. And fabulous wines, although pricey.
J was a great server. The bartenders were also very friendly and we enjoyed their conversation, even from our table. The food was good and the service was prompt. Will be back for sure!
Great local spot with a unique ambience and good food!
Good food, reasonable prices charged for the amount of food served, nice wine selection.
Second time having the small spinach salad with buttermilk (?) dressing, topped with chicken. Sat at back of restaurant to catch up with an out-of-town friend, so was fairly quiet. Friendly waiter was attentive, meal served promptly. Miss your Midlothian location, had some tasty dinners there. Glad Grove Ave remains open.
Unfortunately ate the French onion soup, and was ill for three hours right after. The food was great. But I only get ill, when there is an issue with hygiene of the food. My husband ate a wonderful chicken sandwich and loved it.
Sat outside on Saturday. Nice day, good friends, nice experience!
It was our first visit to Caturra on Grove. It won't be our last! We enjoyed the atmosphere, food and ambiance.
Food was very good. Service was very slow due to under-staffing. Noise level inside was very high. Need to add sounding-proofing to walls/ ceiling and fix staffing issues. Very difficult to hear people at your own table without talking very loudly!
Horrendous experience. Terrible service. Terrible management. Would give 0 stars if I could. Will never go back.
My NO answer is based on this one visit. Lively Saturday night spot. Food was mediocre. Lasagne - very bland and had to request salad dressing for a green salad. Service good but not outstanding. I have eaten both lunch and brunch there on several occasions and always had great food. This visit was mediocre
The food at Caturra is always good. The service today and overall organization was really quite poor. The waiter was taking care of countless tables while also serving as a host and clearing tables. He honestly did a great job for the situation he was in. Will continue to come here but would suggest revamping the lunch/brunch coverage and waitstaff.
Food was delicious and service was good as well. We had omelettes and Pecan French Toast and both were really good. Would recommend.
Our only complaint is parking. The lot and spaces clearly marked for Caturra were all filled, yet we were only 2 of 8 patrons in the restaurant at the time. The food is always amazing and the portions are large. Great place...we will be back - parking struggles and all!
enjoyed Easter brunch at this location, good service, good food, nice interior
Live jazz one notch too loud for continued conversation. First time dining here. Will return!
I ordered fish tacos, but I'm not sure if I got fish rather than meat.
Very pleasant waitstaff, well priced food for the portions (at least in the brunch entrees), and really nice ambiance. Has the feel of being a neighborhood hangout spot, and was welcoming to new comers like my husband and I!
Nice atmosphere and friendly service. But pretty nonplussed by the 2 salads we got. I ordered a steak salad - it had a TINY amount of steak - disappointing.
Great neighborhood gem; quiet, local and was able to see a basketball game at the end of the bar! The service is always great, the food was good. Would love to try other items on the menu and check-out their specials.
I met friends for some wine and a light dinner to discuss a project. We were seated in a banquette near the windows, so it was a comfortable, relaxed space. So nice for visiting and conversation.
Very friendly staff. Warm and tasty breakfast.
We went for the jazz trio and really enjoyed them. An experienced Sax player joined them on their second set and he was outstanding.
The food was okay. The service was okay. The ambiance was okay, but the Saturday night Jazz was really good.
Food was great, service better. We lucked out and had live Jazz playing while ate. Go!
Oh my goodness!! I always like stopping by on a Friday afternoon for happy hour with friends. Since they have changed owners I thought I'd try dinner. There were four of us. We are not complainers but the food was less than bad! I won't go into all of the particulars but we all said we would never return for a meal. I will continue to meet friends there for a drink but no food!!!
Ordered a steak salad medium rare. Steak was well done. Service was slow and inattentive.
Nice ambiance. We never met our server; we went ~10 minutes without speaking with anyone until one of the hostesses ended up taking over our table.
Charcuterie board was okay. Nothing to write home about. My date enjoyed the pork loin. I had the sirloin and it was okay.
My friend and I made a reservation through open table for NYE. Our reservation was for 8pm, and we found out as our waitress was hurrying us that Caturra was closing early at 9pm. What I thought was going to be a nice dinner and drinks before going out ended up being a rushed experience with an over-cooked steak. Definitely a let down.
I've always enjoyed lunch at Caturra's but this was my first time having dinner. Really nice menu with seafood and vegetarian choices. Two of us got the Salmon Picatta with sautéed spinach and I might have licked my plate clean... Husband really enjoyed the Seafood Gumbo. Our server was wonderful. Never let our water glasses go dry even after we paid, the wine was gone, dishes cleared, and we just sat there talking. Can't wait to go back!
First time visiting this restaurant; the food was quite good, lots of wonderful options, can't wait to go back for dinner again and to try their brunch menu, as it looks fabulous. Good service, not overly attentive - provided great recommendations.
