About Café Bistro - Nordstrom Palo Alto
Enjoy a view of the exhibition kitchen in a vibrant cafe that delivers our interpretation of bistro cuisine, including soups, salads, sandwiches, pizza and desserts. Beer and wine are available.
Café Bistro is our approach of an upscale yet casual restaurant, located on the third floor of Nordstrom, near the At Home department, in the Stanford Shopping Center. The French doors and exhibition kitchen create an energetic environment that reveals a stage for our chefs to prepare uniquely designed dishes. The Cilantro Lime Shrimp Salad and Bistro Club are two of our top sellers. In addition to the menu, we also prepare outstanding food & drink specials on a weekly basis. We have a great selection of wine & beer available, and the house made desserts are must!

Café Bistro - Nordstrom Palo Alto Ratings and Reviews
Dishes were expensive and just okay. I ordered a quinoa Greek salad and received a spinach salad that was dusted with quinoa. I was unimpressed and asked where it was. My server pointed out the sprinkling over the spinach and then offered to bring a side of quinoa. She was very nice. My mother ordered a chicken pasta dish that was over-sauced and just okay.
I was hoping for a bowl of Nordstrom's famous tomato soup and was told it is often not on the menu. Disappointing, since there were 3 other soups on the menu.
I probably will not return.
Cafe Bistro has a varied menu, tasty food, good service, and reasonable prices. The turkey club, French Dip, crab macaroni, and angel hair pasta were all enjoyed by my party. The restaurant is a terrific choice for a meal when at the Stanford Shopping Center, but is often crowded so reservations are recommended.
Cafe Bistro at Nordstrom serves numerous delicious salads, sandwiches, and entrees at reasonable prices. My family and I enjoyed the chicken Caesar salad, crab macaroni, turkey baguette, and turkey club sandwich very much. The side-salad that came with the crab macaroni and the french fries served with the sandwiches were also very tasty.
Cafe Bistro is a convenient and popular restaurant and it saves time to have reservations for lunch.
Good selection of salads for lunch. We had a booth and we're comfortable and able to catch up over lunch. Very convenient as it is on the 3rd floor of Nordstrom. They get very busy, so be sure to have a reservation unless you want to wait. Our server, Ocean, was excellent--there when you needed her and left us alone to talk.
Get a reservation or be prepared to wait!! The onion soup is very good and the margarita pizza is great. We also had poke tuna which I actually didn't like. One of us had a burger that was good and the French fries were terrific. Wait staff quite attentive. Will be here again!!
People don't think of going to Nordstrom's for lunch but this is a fantastic restaurant which needs to be discovered by more people. The food quality is very high. For example my friend and I ordered two sandwiches, a prime rib sandwich au jus and a club. Both sandwiches featured freshly roasted beef and turkey, carved and served healthfully and beautifully. Our sandwiches came with shoestring fries which were crispy. I'm sure we could've substituted the fries for a salad.
Give this restaurant a try regardless of whether you are shopping in the mall. You can go there anytime when you are in the Palo Alto area for a quiet, well prepared meal served in a nice restaurant.
I am usually a big fan of Nordstrom cafes, but this was a disappointing experience. We were seated timely -the restaurant was not busy. And, because it wasn't busy it was surprising to be seated at a both whose view was the kitchen entrance and drink station -I can't think of any restaurant, except for fast food placed that has a drink station in the seating area. I wouldn't have cared too much but after ordering salads, a pizza, and side veggies we were still waiting for our meals half an hour after ordering. Our water was refreshed a couple times, but that was the only attention we got until I asked one of the servers, who was busy chatting with several other servers for awhile, when we could expect our meals. They were out 5 minutes later, which was appreciated: however with all the people working, and the lack of customers (maybe two or 3 other tables had diners) it wasn't a positive experience to wait so long for some simple meals and no updatea on the delay. The food and wine was fine, no complaints there, bit based on the customer service experience, I don't expect to go back.
Food was good.
Made the open table reservation and on arrival we were taken to the back of the Resturant in a dark corner. I asked if we could get one of the 3 open booths by the counter. We have been seated there many times without a reservation so I didn't anticipate an issue. The hostess insisted that we didn't choose a "table preference" with the reservation so we would be seated in the back. I said I was stating my preference now and would like the booth. After a bit of back and forth we finally got to sit where we wanted. The fact that she was using the reservation as an excuse was annoying. The process stained the experience. I would say it was a bad OpenTable experience.
My mom and I were enthused to try the prime rib French dip, but I wish I had asked more questions about it. While there was plenty of meat, it was shaved like cheesesteak beef instead of sliced. The jus and kalamata aioli were tasty, but I really wished that the cafe had had some horseradish available. (I spread some on the leftovers when I came home, and they tasted much better.) Fries were a little saltier than usual, but generously portioned and nicely cooked. Service was friendly. I'll come back, but will probably order my usual bistro club sandwich instead.
Very busy lunch spot. Actually, it's important to have reservations. My girlfriend and I had a delightful lunch, splitting a fabulous salad of greens, nuts, figs, strawberries, goat cheese. It was so delicious. Then we split a flat bread pizza with arugula and ham on it. Both dishes were wonderful. We were not rushed in anyway and the service was excellent!
I do there for lunch. It's usually hard to get your waiter for refills etc. But the food is generally always good. My only complaint is that I've had to send back the shrimp on the Cilantro Shrimp Salad (which I love) several times (I go there often). They really overcook it to where you can barely cut it. But other than that, the food is really good. Awesome fries with kalamata aoili and the Raspberry White Chocolate Bread pudding is to die for.
Nordi Cafe is great for lunch and dinner. The noise level is pretty loud, but it kind of becomes white noise so that you can still have a conversation during your meal without having a screaming match. The food and service is mostly consistent, quick, and good.
WE USED TO EAT QUITE REGULARLY AT CB, THEN ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO THEY REMOVED WHAT FOR US WERE THE TWO BEST DISHES: 2 MUSHROOM + RED PEPPERS PIZZA AND ROAST CHICKEN WITH ROOT VEGETABLES. OUR LATEST VISIT, NOT HAVING BEEN FOR MONTHS, IS PROBABLY OUR LAST. INSTEAD OF ROASTED, THE CHICKEN WAS PAN FRIED AND NOT WELL COOKED WITH A MOUND OF GROSSLY OVER SALTED FRIES. THE OVER SALTED THEME CONTINUED WITH THE SOUP OF THE DAY, WHICH OUR NORMALLY VORACIOUS TEENAGE SON WAS UNABLE TO FINISH FOR THAT REASON. SERVICE WAS EXCELLENT AS USUAL.
Salmon Nicoise salad had a little rock or very hard object, I think I may have chipped my tooth. The salad was DROWNED in dressing. It was all sub-par. I have had this salad at least a dozen times before, this was not fitting of Nordstrom. Not to mention that they didn't remove the unappetizing grey fat from the underside of the salmon filet, which was extremely small, by the way, especially for the steep price. Will think twice about going to the cafe again.
The Cafe at Nordstrom has always been a favorite spot of ours. Even when the Palo Alto location upgraded its decor and prices, it was still worth a visit. But last night we were shocked at the mismatch between the high prices and the poor quality of our experience.
The odd experience began with our server. He was very sincere and well meaning, but his overly familiar surfer dude demeanor and beginner-level serving skills made for a rocky evening. He repeatedly forgot simple requests like straws for our drinks, and we found ourselves asking over and over before requested items were delivered. When my wife ordered hot tea the water came cold, and our waiter left the giant wooden box of teabags on our table for the remainder of our meal. It also seemed to take the food an unusually long time to come, even though the restaurant was nearly empty. Afterwards our check came with the signature rod-shaped mint chocolates, but one of the two packages contained no chocolate -- it was just an empty paper envelope.
When we looked at our check we were shocked to find that our meal for two cost over $50. We didn't drink any alcohol, and my wife only ordered a side of spinach and a side of shrimp. My sandwich alone was $20. The waiter upsold me mushrooms on it, adding about $4 to the price, while loudly assuring me, "I'm not upselling you or anything!" If the sandwich is so good with mushrooms, shouldn't they be included when it already costs $16? What's next at Nordstrom, charging extra for sleeves on a sport coat?
I do want to stress that the food was very tasty if slow to arrive, and everyone was friendly and tried hard to be helpful. If only one of the aforementioned things had gone wrong, we probably would have forgotten all about it. But the service was so consistently bad, and the price so out of line with the overall experience, that it made a strong impression. We have scratched this restaurant off our list, and will give it a year or two before we try it again.
