Café Berlin has been serving authentic German cuisine on Capitol Hill since 1985. It occupies the ground floor of three townhouses whose front yards serve as Biergarten for outdoor dining. The interior features a small bar and two cozy dining rooms. The restaurant is located within a short walking distance of Union Station and the U.S. Capitol. It draws politicians, congressional staffer, and tourists as well a loyal following of neighborhood residents. The traditional dishes are authentically prepared with lighter touch by chefs with extensive experience in German cuisine. In addition to the regular menu, the restaurant offer seasonally changing menus that feature fresh asparagus in the spring, salads and light fares in the summer, Bavarian dishes during Oktoberfest in the fall, and wild game in the winter. Desserts which are freshly made in-house include apple strudel, black forest cake, and luscious cream tortes. The bar offers a selection of imported German beers and wines.

I don't think I can honestly put into words how amazing our meal was! Our waiter was first class as was every part of our experience. Thank you for making my husband's birthday so wonderful!

We went on a nice day and we had reservations but the wait for outdoor seating was too long. We sat inside which was perfectly fine for us. The staff was incredibly friendly and the best thing about our dinner. The beer was excellent and the pretzels were great. I got the sausage platter and my husband got the pork dish, cannot remember exactly what it was. The sausage was good, but it pretty much all tasted the same (that could just be me though). My husband really liked his food. I got the sauerkraut and the potato salad as sides and they were both delicious. When the staff found out that it was my birthday they treated us to two free shots which was unexpected, but nice. We had a really great experience and I would definitely go back. The only thing I would say is a con is the dessert was bland and expensive. Neither I nor my husband really liked our dessert and ended up paying 15 dollars for the two small desserts. Also, when my husband went to the bathroom, he noticed the desserts were just boxed in the back. A bit pricey for a thawed dessert. I hate even complaining about that though because everything else was great and I would completely recommend it. Of the restaurants we visited over our stay in DC this might be the only one I would revisit.

We had lunch for my husband's birthday and for Food and Friends. The sauerbraten was the best I have ever had. The wienerschnitzel was good, although thinner than I like. We had plenty to eat, and we will go again.

We had a delightful visit to the beer garden. As always, the food was delish and the beer oh-so-yummy. They surprised us with free shots because we were celebrating an anniversary. Great times!

We've visited Cafe Berlin several times, summer and winter, inside and out. The food and beer never disappoints. Service can be spotty, irregardless of the season, so expect authentic German dishes but don't expect to be served with German punctuality.

Such a lovely place with a fantastic staff. As I’ve done many times, we sat outside and had a great food and drinks. It has a quiet neighborhood feel, even though it’s in one of the busiest parts of the city. I can’t recommend this place enough if you like German food.

Cafe Berlin is a DC must. The food, beer and service are always incredible and the garden seating is not to be missed. Our faves include Gebackener Brie, Obatzter Und Pretzel, Rinderroulade, and the Wurstfeast. As German-Americans, we truly appreciate the care and attention to detail that Rico and the chefs at Cafe Berlin put into their specialities.

Before an event at the Folger Theater . . . Cafe Berlin's staff recommended the quickest and best dishes. Good service. Tasty, traditional food. A nice walk afterwards to the theater with time to spare.

Just read in WPost that few German restaurants remaining, never mentioning Cafe Berlin. Hmmm. It was not only authentic, but offered delicious favorites prepared with rich flavors. We enjoyed the spinach salad with warm goat cheese ball and candied pecans; sauerbraten served with traditional red cabbage, potatoes and dill cucumbers; and whole trout smothered in butter and parsley with lemon and fingerling potatoes. Too full for dessert, but when the cart passed nearby, resisting was very difficult. The recommended Reisling - always hard for me to find one both dry yet fruity - was a hit, along with beer choices to please most tastes. We arrived a bit early traveling from VA but were kindly seated in the rush hour of the Sat night dinner crowd. Thank you!

My wife and I recently enjoyed a pleasant dining experience at Cafe Berlin. It's an intimate restaurant serving German cuisine within easy walking distance of the Folger Shakespeare Theatre. We were both pleased with the Gebackener Brie appetizer (fried brie with sliced pears) and the Cordon Blue main meal served with rice and an orange sauce. I was surprised to find that the "large" off-the-menu double Dunkel beer I ordered turned out to be a full liter of German amber brew! Fortunately, it was as easy to imbibe as it was large. I finished off with the lightest of at least a half dozen delicious looking cheese cake desserts. The whipped cream filling had me wishing for more. We'll be back.

We love this place. Our favorite neighborhood restaurant, with excellent, high-quality German food, using very fresh ingredients. Pleasant servers who are good with kids.

Would love to give them 5 stars but the interior of the restaurant, although clean and well-maintained, is bland to the point that f depressing. I wish they would improve the lighting and paint the walls something other than dead white.

Haven’t been here in a very long time, which is a shame. The food and beer are as good as always. The feeling of the place was a little different than I remembered- a little bit more casual and friendly, which I liked. Some reliable restaurants evolve in good ways and Cafe Berlin is one of them.

Arrived for our 7:15PM reservation 30 minutes early. We were prepared to wait, but the hostess went ahead and seated us anyway. The other member of our party was about 20 minutes late (arrived at 7:35PM), but the waitress was attentive and pleasant even though we were taking up a table without ordering. Food of weinerschnitzel and German mac & cheese was very tasty. Also had long list of German drinks, including beer and wine, at different price points. Reservation recommended, since the restaurant can fill up.

Excellent authentic German food, a little disappointed in the beer selection, didn’t even have all of the few beers on the menu, half of German dining is the beer imo but at least they had a good Dunkel. Still great spot with great food, would recommend
