Great Beer
Café Berlin has been serving authentic German cuisine on Capitol Hill since 1985. It occupies the ground floor of three townhouses whose front yards serve as Biergarten for outdoor dining. The interior features a small bar and two cozy dining rooms. The restaurant is located within a short walking distance of Union Station and the U.S. Capitol. It draws politicians, congressional staffer, and tourists as well a loyal following of neighborhood residents. The traditional dishes are authentically prepared with lighter touch by chefs with extensive experience in German cuisine. In addition to the regular menu, the restaurant offer seasonally changing menus that feature fresh asparagus in the spring, salads and light fares in the summer, Bavarian dishes during Oktoberfest in the fall, and wild game in the winter. Desserts which are freshly made in-house include apple strudel, black forest cake, and luscious cream tortes. The bar offers a selection of imported German beers and wines.

This is one of the best German restaurants between Honolulu and Berlin. The menu items, even for lunch, are genuine German options. The menu includes German salad choices not always represented in the United States. There is enough rotation so that I have new choices on each visitt

The place was lovely and the food was solid. However, the place is crawling with mosquitos both inside and out. So word of warning before going, I ended up with 6 bites.

As a 1st time visitor to Washington I had spent the day walking miles and miles and I was so looking forward to a relaxing meal in the evening. Unfortunately I didn't receive any welcome here. I visited the bathroom only to discover a huge floater in the toilet and try as I could the toilet would not flush. I returned to the bar and related my experience to my partner in a normal tone which was overheard by the personnel behind the bar. The reaction was quite rude ... I was told 'It's a european toilet" ! (toilets in Europe do work!) I was then asked if we wanted to stay or leave ! Her reaction was rude and uncalled for. I have lived in the US for 4 years after moving from Europe and this was my first such bad experience. We stayed sat at the bar when a poor member of staff hurried by and dropped a plate right by my husbands leg and spattered food remains all over his trouser leg. Fortunately we aren't quickly irritated and he just wiped it all off and we let it pass in good grace. We aren't up for squabbles so we stayed and ate a meal which we did enjoy, the food being quite authentic. The restaurant was full which seems to be a daily occurrence, so I feel that the staff were appropriately hurried and stressed which is easily picked up on by your guests and makes them feel uneasy. My message would be PLEASE; do not forget that restaurants are to do with people and hospitality, even if people only visit once and never come again ! PS.... this is a true story.

I definitely recommend Cafe Berlin for Oktoberfest. The servers are dressed festively and there are special dishes and beers for the classisms. Sit outside in the mini beer garden if you can. Inside is really dimly lit and can feel a bit like a basement since it’s in an old row home.

Cafe Berlin is always a good choice. The wurst platter is amazing, the bretzel appetizer fun and my pork medallion entree was plentiful enough for lunch the next day.

My friends and I had a tasty meal at Cafe Berlin. From the beer to the main dishes to dessert, everything was wonderful, as usual. The service was very good and overall the whole experience gets an enthusiastic two thumbs up. Suggestion: if it's on the menu, get the Schweinehaxe. It's amazing!

Special menu for Oktoberfest. Great German mac and cheese. Had a pasta special ravioli with spinach and pork. Excellent. This food is hearty and heavy so if you are looking to eat light, go elsewhere. Good selection of beers. Patio for eating and drinking. We ate inside because of rain. Entrance to patio area from the sidewalk is obvious. Entrance to inside restaurant not so clear. Small lively bar area. Large party of native Germans seated near my party, always a good sign in my opinion. Only drawback was that a few of the entrees were all gone by the time we ordered, and it wasn't much past 7 pm. There were other choices but this was a little disappointing. Food is cooked to order so if you are in a rush make sure the server knows this and is able to recommend choices that will be done quickly. Better yet, go when you are able to enjoy a leisurely dinner.

A good variety of Oktoberfest menu offerings. I opted for the sauerbraten and spaetzle and was not disappointed. The wait staff were attentive and most helpful. And certainly can’t complain about being able to dine al fresco in mid October. Highly recommend.

A recent dinner seated inside and an even more recent lunch outside both were quite pleasant with good food and atmosphere. Although Cafe Berlin is very near our home, previously, my wife and I had not visited for several years because we remembered the food as heavy and nothing special while the area has many great alternatives. But both of our recent meals were very tasty with interesting salads, soups and mains, and the Octoberfest beers were great. I should add that the woman behind the bar -- who may be the "new" owner and also, I learned, serves as hostess -- snapped at me "I'm busy" when she overheard me tell a person in line that I hadn't seen anyone to check-in for my reservation. But otherwise, service for both meals was friendly and efficient. Will definitely return.

Cafe Berlin was recommended to me by friend. Overall, it was a good experience. Being Oktoberfest season, the menu offered traditional German and Bavarian cuisine. That being said the menu was also limited due to the season. The food was tasty.
The place was packed that’s for sure. Luckily we had reservations because those who did not had a bit of a wait to be seated. Cafe Berlin offers indoor and outdoor seating. They had a band lined up, so outdoor seating was not possible for my visit. I may go back just to try their food options outside of Oktoberfest season. I would give the pricing 2 stars. Semi-pricey. $13-$18 depending on what you order.

Excellent German food with a refreshingly modern twist. But all of the old standbys are available, too. My weinerschnitzel was some of the best I have ever had....tender, crusty and delicious. We sat outside on the lovely courtyard patio and enjoyed a beautiful evening. Good German beer makes this place even more special. Highly recommend.

I was in town on vacation, & found an ad for Cafe Berlin in a DC travel magazine from my hotel.
I am so glad I found them. I had the Weiner schnitzel, & it was delicious. I had gooseberry tart for dessert...YUM! The service was great. It was extremely hot & humid that evening, & the wait staff was running in & out of that heat. They were working hard. I didnt have any beer, but they had a good selection.
I definitely recommend!

We ate from the Oktoberfest menu. The wurstsalat was very good as usual. The schnitzel sandwich that I ordered had came on a nice panini-like roll and the sandwich had a surprising kick to it that I enjoyed. It went very well with the tasty Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest beer, which is made in the traditional "marzen" style. Bianca, our attractive server wearing a durndel, was very pleasant and efficient.
