About Cafe Berlin
Café Berlin has been serving authentic German cuisine on Capitol Hill since 1985. It occupies the ground floor of three townhouses whose front yards serve as Biergarten for outdoor dining. The interior features a small bar and two cozy dining rooms. The restaurant is located within a short walking distance of Union Station and the U.S. Capitol. It draws politicians, congressional staffer, and tourists as well a loyal following of neighborhood residents. The traditional dishes are authentically prepared with lighter touch by chefs with extensive experience in German cuisine. In addition to the regular menu, the restaurant offer seasonally changing menus that feature fresh asparagus in the spring, salads and light fares in the summer, Bavarian dishes during Oktoberfest in the fall, and wild game in the winter. Desserts which are freshly made in-house include apple strudel, black forest cake, and luscious cream tortes. The bar offers a selection of imported German beers and wines.

Cafe Berlin Ratings and Reviews
Cafe Berlin was a perfect dinner spot overall. It is casual and not stuffy at all. The servers are very knowledgable of German food and give great recommendations. Its a very kid friendly venue and they have a great selection of Beers. The food was tasty, authentic and my kids loved it. My kids both had the Chicken and Veal Schnitzel and my husband and I shared the Wurst Platter. We have the Potato Pancakes and Fried Brie to start and the sides consisted of Red Cabbage, Sauerkraut, Spatzle and Potato Dumplings. For dessert we got two crumble pies Berry and Gooseberry and a vanilla cheesecake all incredible. Quantities of the main dishes were enormous and can definitly be shared. We loved it and may come back again before we leave for Lunch or Dinner again. We had an 8:00 p.m reservation on a Sunday, plenty of seating inside and out.
I had the spinach salad with salmon and it was delicious. We ate inside because it was so very HOT over lunch, but in the evening the outside patio would have been wonderful. This is a wonderful restaurant for lots of reasons, but one of the best ones is that it is quiet .... and you can depend upon hearing every word of people sitting at your table.
Cafe Berlin is known for the nice outdoor patio seating, so we were hoping to sit outside. When we arrived, the bartender asked about our reservation and then asked if we wanted to wait for a seat outside. I asked how long it would be and she said she had no idea, then proceeded to ignore us. We opted to sit inside, but regretted that decision. The indoor dining room has about as much ambiance as a dental office waiting room. The server was somewhat rude as well - abrupt and unfriendly. Apparently they were busy and there were only 2 servers - and since we were sitting by the server station, we heard them complaining about it. I enjoyed the food, which was surprising because it is hard to find good German food in this area. The pork tenderloin over spaetzle with fried onions was delicious. The pretzel with the cheese spread was a nice appetizer. The potato pancakes were just ok - I think mine are actually better. Server never asked if we wanted drink refills or dessert. If I ever to back, I would wait for the outdoor table.
The food and atmosphere were excellent. However, the service was way too slow for a weekday lunch. Two of us waited a long time for our sandwich, salad, and soup, and they first brought the wrong food. Then we waited a very long time for the check, had to flag someone down for it, and it never did appear. We finally walked up to the bar and they had not yet even printed it. Great place, really, but we won't go there again for lunch. Too bad, because it is one of the few good choices near our office.
Café Berlin was a good choice for a business lunch. The staff were very accommodating, including my request on the morning of the reservation for a table by a window. We arrived about 15 minutes early but were shown right to the table I requested. The service was not intrusive, and it was neither rushed nor too slow. Between the unobtrusive service and the restaurant's cozy atmosphere, it felt very comfortable to have a confidential business discussion over our meal. (And our business was politics, so discretion is especially appreciated in this location on the Senate side of Capitol Hill.) My only quibble was the very hard, crusty bread used to make my meatloaf sandwich. It was too hard and unmanageable to eat like a sandwich, especially during a business discussion, so I removed the bread and ate the rest with a fork and knife. (I wish I'd ordered the Wiener Schnitzel entrée, instead -- lesson learned.) The chilled potato-leek soup on the side was refreshing but had a slightly-too-strong taste of nutmeg. The other side dish, on the other hand -- German potato salad -- was fantastic! Not as good as mama's, of course, but a very close second. Our lunch lasted two hours, wrapping up just before 3:00 p.m., but we never felt rushed to vacate the table. I've been to Café Berlin on many special occasions for dinner, but it's also a solid "go-to" when I need to have a business lunch on the Senate side of the Hill. I'm already looking forward to next time!
Cafe Berlin has wonderful German food, and an excellent German beer list. Service is both professional and friendly, and the food is simply amazing - I was born in Germany and have family I visit often, so I know good German food when I eat it. Great place!
Cafe Berlin never disappoints. It's a local gem of a restaurant with a truly from-scratch kitchen. The food is truly authentic - classic German favorites with a modern appeal. The draft beers are poured cold and with a great head just like you'd get in Germany.
We sat on the patio starting at 5:00pm, drank tasty German beers, ate homemade Bavarian pretzels, ordered schnitzel, and finished with dessert. Highly recommend the seasonal rhubarb custard cake.
Not enough stars for this place - one of our favorites ever!
Outdoor seat is full even though I have reserved my seat. For appetizer, potato pancake is generic, nothing to be surprised at all. Sausage is fine, but curry sauce is way too weird, the original flavor of sausage is overwhelmed.
For entree, marinated beef is good, but why the pickle is with same flavor as beef? Fired pork is delicious, texture is spot on and mushroom sauce is amazing.
Try more entree but may skip the appetizer.
It was a perfect DC day, with bright sunshine and a beautiful breeze, and what better way to spend it than with a cool beer in a cozy biergarten! The food was excellent and authentic (my German mother would have approved). I will definitely be back to sample some of the other offerings. I eat out often and I would absolutely recommend this place.
Late afternoon, we had a mostly adequately shaded table in the biergarten. Service was prompt, attentive, and cheerful. The wiener schnitzel was excellent, as usual, with a delicious medley of very fresh vegetables and potatoes. The gooseberry pie was a perfect finish.
