About Cafe Berlin
Café Berlin has been serving authentic German cuisine on Capitol Hill since 1985. It occupies the ground floor of three townhouses whose front yards serve as Biergarten for outdoor dining. The interior features a small bar and two cozy dining rooms. The restaurant is located within a short walking distance of Union Station and the U.S. Capitol. It draws politicians, congressional staffer, and tourists as well a loyal following of neighborhood residents. The traditional dishes are authentically prepared with lighter touch by chefs with extensive experience in German cuisine. In addition to the regular menu, the restaurant offer seasonally changing menus that feature fresh asparagus in the spring, salads and light fares in the summer, Bavarian dishes during Oktoberfest in the fall, and wild game in the winter. Desserts which are freshly made in-house include apple strudel, black forest cake, and luscious cream tortes. The bar offers a selection of imported German beers and wines.

Cafe Berlin Ratings and Reviews
I love this German place nestled in between row homes on Capitol Hill. The food is excellent with rotating seasonal menus including options for vegetarians and the meat lover among you. It has a cozy and homey feel to it and their holiday fixed prize menus are fabulous. Just leave the cooking to them! :-)
The waiter got the order wrong. The food was a very poor imitation of German food. The place really had nothing to recommend it. We will not go again and will not recommend it to our friends. We would have done better to have stayed home.
The meals were good as was the service. The waiter seemed knowledgable and helpful. The problem was the waiter ordered the wrong meal for me and the meal he ordered happened to be the most expensive one on the menu. He offered to take it back but my wife had her meal so that didn't seem too practical. I took the meal he brought but felt he could have adjusted the price to that of the meal I originally ordered.
We went here after seeing a show at the Kennedy Center. There was a group of us and we were dressed up but didn't feel out of place, although there were plenty of casual attire as well. The food was great, the beer was good, and the waiter was fantastic. The only thing to note is there is only two bathrooms which seemed to always be taken and there was a very obnoxious party a few tables down, but since my party was mostly boys they just decided to give up on being annoyed and be equally loud.
While the food may not be quite as good what you find in Stuttgart or Munich, it is reasonably authentic and tasty. The prices are reasonable as well, just be careful that you pay attention to the beer prices as they vary significantly depending upon the brewery. The place has a comforting ambience.
We were on our way to a cultural event in the area, and decided to try Cafe Berlin. We enjoy German food and were enthusiastic about the quality of the Schnitzel and the Sauerbraten, along were very good sides. Service was good as well. The gooseberry torte was exciting. Excellent beer on tap and decent coffee round out the experience. There's a nice biergarten but we choose indoors as there was a chill in the air. One disappointment: several items were on the online and print menus that were not available yet. So we'll have to go back soon, and we will.
I have been to Cafe Berlin both with family and with students for seminars. The restaurant is quiet and comfortable. The food as good a collection of German food as you are likely to find outside a historic German community in America. We normally came for supper, but this was for Sunday brunch. The menu was short, but imaginative-- and German.
Superb German Restaurant near Capitol Hill. Excellent food and intimate atmosphere. Attentive, friendly service. Great selection of popular German dishes. Extensive beer, wine and liquor choices available. Everything is very reasonably priced. A great place to revisit, time and time again. A gem!
It's fun during Oktoberfest because they serve a special menu and various Oktoberfest beers from Germany. They also have a special tent over the patio seating and recorded music in the spirit of the festival. The servers wear the traditional outfits to add ambiance to the meal.
Cafe Berlin is one of our favorites on Capitol Hill. They always have good beer and great German Food. When the weather is nice, it's a treat to sit out doors and sip beer in the fresh air. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful. However, they seem to be stretched too thin. Although they have a team approach to serving, so that you can flag anyone if you need something, it can be difficult to make eye contact when you want to order dessert, get another round, or ask for the check.
