About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
Café Berlin has been serving authentic German cuisine on Capitol Hill since 1985. It occupies the ground floor of three townhouses whose front yards serve as Biergarten for outdoor dining. The interior features a small bar and two cozy dining rooms. The restaurant is located within a short walking distance of Union Station and the U.S. Capitol. It draws politicians, congressional staffer, and tourists as well a loyal following of neighborhood residents. The traditional dishes are authentically prepared with lighter touch by chefs with extensive experience in German cuisine. In addition to the regular menu, the restaurant offer seasonally changing menus that feature fresh asparagus in the spring, salads and light fares in the summer, Bavarian dishes during Oktoberfest in the fall, and wild game in the winter. Desserts which are freshly made in-house include apple strudel, black forest cake, and luscious cream tortes. The bar offers a selection of imported German beers and wines.

This was the second time at the restaurant for my wife and I. We enjoyed the food and beer so much last time that we wanted to make a second visit and it didn’t disappoint. I was introduced to German cuisine in the Army and every chance I get I return. This restaurant is a carbon copy of that memory.

My friend and I had lunch. We were planning to sit on the patio but because of the intensely hot weather outside we opted to sit inside at the bar. My friend had a schnitzel sandwich served with onion rings, which he enjoyed very much, and I had the flunder (flounder) sandwich which was also very good. The coleslaw with the sandwich was overly dressed, but not bad. Our server/bartender, Ingea (not sure of the spelling), was very attentive and pleasant, and we were happy that a Hofbrau Maibock was still available on tap.

We enjoyed our meal and our service was terrific. The veal schnitzel was a bit disappointing. It was greasy and the lemon on the side was a trade shape that could not be squeezed over the meat.

Delicious as always! Loved the special appetizer of perogies, and tried the “German” raviolis which were superb! As always we enjoyed wursts with enough leftover for a Monday night German feast! Don’t forget to order the strudel!! Excellent

Food was delicious. Our table had the pretzels for an app, then for entrees the trout, salad with poached egg, and the schnitzel. Had a mix of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The pour on the martini seemed a little too short. Our server Simone was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. We sat outside on the covered patio, which is dog-friendly. For the price point, could use a little more visually appealing attention to the tables themselves. But overall great place to sit outside and eat good food with friendly service. Seemed to be a positive work environment for staff too.
