We love this restaurant - the outside garden transports us to Germany!
Go here every time we visit DC. Reminds us of all our trips to Germany over the years.
Great place to have authentic German food with great service at a reasonable price.
Excellent food and service. We informed the staff in advance that one person had an allergy issue and the hostess immediately explained the options for us after seating us. The space was a little tight as they were trying to fit as many tables outdoors as possible and we happened to be in the high traffic area, but overall everything was fantastic and I’d definitely go back.
Good food, great service. Nice selection of German Beers
Restaurant has potential. Little underwhelmed by food and service.
Visit with friends
Wonderful German restaurant on Capitol Hill. Best schnitzel in town.
Servers were overwhelmed with too many guests and not enough waiters/waitresses. We waited very, very long time for first round of drinks and appetizer. Server forgot to bring a soup appetizer as well. Food is good, but service is lacking unfortuantely
A really great meal!!!!!
Sauerbraten was very good!
Get the strudel!
Delightful outside dining with a feeling of being in the lawn of a German home.
Server was friendly but she disappeared a lot. Maybe she was covering both inside and outside.
I would definitely come again
As always a delight. Food and service were excellent.
Thanks for your feedback!
Food was mediocre. We were seated in the back dining room at a table for six. We were just a couple. The room was stuffy and they had dehumidifiers or air conditioners on the floor. Server was friendly, food was prompt but bland. The ambience is on the patio, not inside.
Thanks for taking time to leave us feedback! Sorry we did not live up to your expectations. The units in our dining rooms are HEPA air filtration units put in place when we re-opened indoor dining to add additional protection for our staff and customers. Best, Clytie
I asked the owner if we could move to a table outside since the inside was musty and moldy and she said they were full although there were empty tables outdoors. Within 15 min the party that was seated by us inside moved outdoors !! After our meal I spoke to the owner and said that was unacceptable specially because I have severe allergies and she moved another table outdoors, she said “oh I am sorry ! “ That was it ! I said “well that is not helpful” she out of the blue yelled at me in front of everyone and said: “god dammed you try and run a restaurant in a pandemic!” imagine how my digestion was ! Rude people and server !
We differ in how we recall the exchange. After being seated you did ask to move outdoors, but we had reservations for all outdoor tables. Later, a reservation for outdoors cancelled, I sent a staff member to your table to move your party. It wasn't until you were leaving & started yelling at me that I realized the wrong party was moved. I explained the mistake & apologized profusely & you continued to yell that "it wasn't good enough." I regret loosing my cool & apologize that mistakes were made
Cafe Berlin never disappoints, and our server, Bianca is always attentive and friendly. It has a really lovely outdoor patio with perfect ambiance.
Excellent German spezialitaeten, especially schnitzels and kartoffelsalat. Beer is also decent. Highly recommended!
The food wasn't too authentic for German fare.
Ambience very nice though!
Thanks so much for taking time to send us feedback! We regret that we failed to live up to your expectations. The food in German varies wildly between regions. Our Chef and Co-owner was born, raised, and trained on the Islands of Germany (Rugen and Sylt) and worked for many years in the Black Forest and Bavaria before immigrating to the United States. He certainly puts his stamp on all of our dishes but they are very much in line with meals we have eaten when visiting family there.
The food was excellent! On previous visits we received great service. This time, the server (male) was surly and did not respond reasonably to requests. For example, my wife aske him to compare two beers and he asked what she meant. In other places, the server usually responds with comments about hops, flavors, alcohol content, etc. In this case he ultimately offered to bring a taster but never did so.
He never inquired about the quality of the food and the dirty dishes stayed on our table for about ten minutes until another server cleared the table. We asked for desert menus and he bought one menu for the table. He brought the check but another server ran the card and returned it to the table. We really like Cafe Berlin. However, when we return we will request another server.
Thanks so much for taking time to give us your feedback. We are glad you enjoyed your food and apologize that our service failed to live up to our standards. We will endeavor to do better and hope you will give us another chance!
Cafe Berlin has been a favorite of mine for many years. It is one of a handful of German restaurants in the DC Metro area - for that reason alone, it would merit supporting any way possible. But, this restaurant has earned more than just being another German foodie's outpost in this area - it has a style all its own. The food is good (and plentiful) and the service and atmosphere are great.
A lovely beer garden with great German draft beer and quite good food. Cream of asparagus soup superb. I am a big fan of the hunerschnitzel!
Thanks so much for your feedback!
This place is delicious, atmosphere was amazing, staff was lovely. Will definitely be going back!
Food was excellent, service was great. Overall a great experience.
Food was excellent although the saurbratan portion was a bit small. Overall very satisfied.
Great food, great service, as always.
My favorite place in DC. Always a fantastic part of my life.
Delicious food, reasonably priced liters of beer, fun patio. The restaurant on a Saturday evening was clearly short staffed. Although we were enjoying beer and apps, it took the staff 1.5 hours to get to us to order actual entrees. I had to seek out a staff member to order. I don’t blame the staff— they were all very nice, but it was clear that they were stretched very thin. My advice at the moment is to plan on spending a long time if you grab dinner here, plan for it to be your entire evening. Just pretend like you’re actually in Germany!
This was the best German meal I had in a long time. I had the white aspergus with hollanddaise sauce and boilled potatoes, it was out of this world.
Our waiter was attentive, and very organized, and did everything right to make this a perfect visit.
This restaurant always keeps fresh, seasonal items on its menu as well as all of the old German favorites. We went during spring's Weiss Spargel Fest and had some terrific white asparagus soup and Weiner Schnitzel with white asparagus & Hollandaise sauce. So good! Chef keeps being creative and service is always friendly and efficient. Try to sit outdoors if you can. Great atmosphere. And great BEER selections!
The white asparagus and the risotto salmon were delicious as were the asparagus ice cream and strawberry rhubarb desserts. The service was ecxcellent and the outside seating was so very welcome on the beautifully warm evening. The prices are expected.
Love this place!
Cafe Berlin is a great place to go if you want your craving for Schnitzel and Spatzle satsified!
I've been going to Cafe Berlin for over 20 years. It has held up nicely. The current owners have brought a new vibrancy and have added rotating specials. This gives you the standard, time-tested selections and exciting new options as well. Don't forget to choose a German bier to go with your meal. They have several on tap.
Excellent food and ambiance. Staff very attentive.
Food was great service was good and the atmosphere was pleasant. Very enjoyable
This is the first time we have eaten at Cafe Berlin that the food was mediocre. The potato pancake were overcooked, the sauerbraten was too vinegary, and the weinersnitzel was pounded so thin that your could hardly see the meat from all the breading (besides being very dry!).
Two tables were occupied in the room, and the man talking at the other table was talking so loud that if he weren’t talking in another language, we could have understood every word he said.
We have made it a point to eat at Cafe Berlin every time we were in DC (a couple of times a year). This was our first disappointing experience there. Not sure we will return 🙁
Our favorite place to dine. The food and service are exemplary and now that the weather has warmed the patio is a terrific option for dining.
We had an outdoor table that was cleaned while we watched; very thorough cleaning. The weather was beautiful when we went, but if it had not been, they had blankets and outdoor heating at the ready. They had imported German bier on tap - including a recent favorite of mine; it was reasonably priced. We had a traditional appetizer, potato pancakes - made from scratch - which was served with sour cream and with apple sauce. The entree was a holiday special, lamb shank, which was plentiful in size and equally large in deliciousness and flavor; moist, tender, everything you want to see and taste in a meal. Surprisingly, we had room for the strawberry and rhubarb cheesecake with crumbles and whipped cream. The staff provided excellent service throughout and knew all the ingredients in all the dishes. The owner even stopped by our table to see how everything had been. We will definitely come back - with friends in tow - and recommend to anyone who reads this post!
Fantastic Easter brunch. Food was delicious, staff excellent and the apple strudel desert was the best ever.
