Great Beer
Café Berlin has been serving authentic German cuisine on Capitol Hill since 1985. It occupies the ground floor of three townhouses whose front yards serve as Biergarten for outdoor dining. The interior features a small bar and two cozy dining rooms. The restaurant is located within a short walking distance of Union Station and the U.S. Capitol. It draws politicians, congressional staffer, and tourists as well a loyal following of neighborhood residents. The traditional dishes are authentically prepared with lighter touch by chefs with extensive experience in German cuisine. In addition to the regular menu, the restaurant offer seasonally changing menus that feature fresh asparagus in the spring, salads and light fares in the summer, Bavarian dishes during Oktoberfest in the fall, and wild game in the winter. Desserts which are freshly made in-house include apple strudel, black forest cake, and luscious cream tortes. The bar offers a selection of imported German beers and wines.

Amazing food. We had the trout, bretzels and the dumplings. All fantastic. The noise was a little on the loud side and the tables were pretty closely packed together. The service was perfect and so was the beer.

Excellent, traditional german food. Attentive service. Reasonable prices. This is as good as it gets in Washington, but not at the same level as the best restaurants in Germany. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal.

This is in need of a lot of work to upgrade the ambience and the food. The food was OK but not reflective of the high quality German food can be.

I was looking for a quiet place for a family dinner of 9. This was perfect. We had a back room that we shared with another group of 5. Food and drinks were good and authentic. I would go back

Service very good. Schnitzel a little too thin but good. Bier prices exorbitantly high. $15.00 for .5L.....Bier prices not on menu.....I have not paid these prices for a German bier at any other German restaurant anywhere else in states.
No apfel strudel for dessert.

The feel of this restaurant is quaint, but not particularly "designed"-- like a comfortable neighborhood
place. Service is good, but not ideal-- they seemed a bit understaffed when we arrived at 5:30 pm for dinner.-- we had to ask for our bread, for instance. As for the food-- it's uneven. The plate of a variety of German Salads was pretty and spot on. The wild boar stew was very well flavored and generous. On the other hand, the bowl of goulash soup, while very tasty, had a pretty stingy quantity of beef and carrots in it.
Then again-- great spaetzele with cheese. The big disappointment in the dessert were the fruit tortes. Stay away from the cherry and the gooseberry-- canned fruit, lots of cornstarch ( in the gooseberry), and flavorless. The chocolate custard torte, however, was very good. So pick carefully.

My favorite German restaurant in the DMV. We almost always eat there whenever we go to a play at the Folger Theater. The food and drink are outstanding, and pretty much authentic (can attest, because I lived in Germany). Service is topnotch, ambience is comfortable and classy but not stuffy. Wirklich ausgezeichnet!

Excellent German Restaurant. I worked on Capital Hill for several years and enjoyed Cafe Berlin several times for lunches and after work. Very good food but desserts are not the best. Excellent service and terrific beer. Definitely try the potato pancakes.

Food is good. Service when we were there was terrible. Waited an unusual about of time before being able to order and then waited about an hour for two dinners. It is pretty loud which made conversation difficult durning the wait. Haven’t decided if I would go back or not.

I had always been meaning to try Cafe Berlin after passing by on my way to Union Station - and wow was I blown away! Phenomenal food and great service with a nice ambiance. The currywurst brought me back to my days living in Germany! Looking forward to making this place more of a regular destination!

If you're in the mood for German food or delicious German beer on the Hill, look no further than Cafe Berlin. Great lunch specials like wursts and schnitzels and homemade soups await. Top that off with five rotating taps and you've got a place to hunker down on cold winter days...until the patio opens during the Spring and Summer. Besides the food, the service is friendly and professional and the space is very cozy.

A friend and I have been coming to their 2:30pm Christmas Eve afternoon dinner seating for several years. I remember my German mother making Gänsebrust, goose, every Christmas and Cafe Berlin offers a $55 price fixe menu. I had the unusual salad of pomegranate, blood oranges, and walnuts, the goose, and a gooseberry crumb cake. I would have given five stars if it weren’t for a strange delay we experienced. We were one of the first attendees, yet the last to receive their meal orders. Everyone was eating dessert while we were still waiting for our main entree about 40 minutes later. The waitress finally told us that the “sauce” for my tablemate’s sauerbraten needed to be redone and that was the cause of the delay. It was rather uncomfortable waiting watching everyone else eat. Had we known that there was a delay with the sauerbraten, my tablemate would have ordered something else. Other than that, we enjoyed our meals and plan to return next year.

First visit. Other than the wiener schnitzel, pleasant enough, nothing outstanding. Two of three entrees were the wiener schnitzel which was the worst we have ever been served anywhere -- gray, heavy coating, tasted of old grease. We were taken aback when we looked at it and ate maybe one-forth of it. We didn't make a big deal of it during the meal, but told the waiter when clearing that as a signature dish we were surprised the kitchen served it. He just smirked, which we interrupted as either not caring, or yes, I've heard that before.

The Service was very good, the decor a bit stuffy, but still cozy. It was clean and the Bathroom was also clean. The Food was very good, BUT it was not hot. I came with my husband and he had the Wiener Schnitzel which was right hot out of the pan. I had the Sauerbraten with Knoedel and it was a bit warmer than luke warm. I did not send it back as I did not wanted my husband to eat alone, and then me eating alone. That was dissapointing, but the taste of the food was good.

An interesting setting reminiscent of taverns I visited in Germany many years ago. The waitstaff and greeters are most agreeable. Waitstaff had good suggestions about dishes that I and my small party were unaware. The potato pancakes appetizer were delicious, thin, crisp, and lots of flavor. My trout almadine was cooked exactly as I requested. My dining partners enjoyed the wild boar dishes which were quite flavorful. The dessert selection was also interesting, one of the party got the gooseberry tart and pronounced it excellent.

This has become our go-to German restaurant in DC. The food is delicious. The decor is meh, but I LOVE the desserts. They are so much more than the generic German chocolate cake, Black Forest cake, etc. They do so many tortes that I ate in Germany or were made by German friends. Wonderful. Love the Mohnkuchen and the Bienenstich cakes.
