Genuine, but modern German dishes. The beer list is good, without being overpowering. The deserts were pretty standard. The spatzle dish was really interesting--a bit Italian in composition, but fully suited for a Sunday brunch. The supper menu runs more toward the traditional meat-focused German dishes. There was a potato pancake option on the menu, but I did not find it while ordering. In any events no complaints even from a group of students from Hawaii who were clearly not familiar with German food.
As usual a magnificent place to eat. Neighborhood casual combined with delicious food and beer. Our go to place for family gatherings.
Best Sauerbraten I have ever eaten. You will not he disappointed.
Best German food I had this side of the Atlantic, sausages were authentic and well made, great selection of German beers and wine. Ein guter Abendessen - genau so wie in Deutschland!
As always the staff and food was top notch.
Food was fantastic and reasonably priced. The German beer was true but very pricey.
Restaurant is cozy but our neighbors are loud talkers. Nothing can be done about that. Service was exemplary.
The venison was the most tender meat I have ever had!!!!
Wonderful service by Liz, fast friendly, excellent food and ambiance. Favorite in DC!
A family go to! Always great service and food. My dad has been going here for 20+ yrs.
The highlight of every trip too D.C.
Super all around. Liz was terrific server and host
This is our favorite neighborhood . Everything is good. Pork is tender and flavorful. Fish is delicious. the traditional German dishes are excellent.
Delicious as always. Starting coming to Cafe Berlin about a year ago, and I find myself going more and more often. Always a delicious meal and great staff.
Excellent, authentic German Food and beer selections. Worth several visits! Service can be a bit disengaged but overall is good.
We ate from ~4:45 - ~6:45. Staff was kind and attentive — but noticeably understaffed. Food was excellent, and also portions were reflective of the prices. Overall, lovely experience for an early birthday surprise for my friend, and a perfect prelude to a Folger show!
Really enjoyed the beer, and goulash was tender and tasty, with a delicious gravy.
For authentic German food & beer, you must try Cafe Berlin. Service & atmosphere are outstanding. In warm weather patio is wonderful. In cold weather it's warm & cozy inside.
A traditional German meal with delicious desserts
Schnitzel was very bad. Coating was black but not burnt and very thin. I would not order this again unless this was an anomaly for this day
Cafe Berlin is amazing. We love the food and the service is awesome.
love that pig roast! why 50 characters??????????????????
Food was good as usual but the service was not it’s usually stellar experience. Perhaps bc it was Ocktoberfest.
Ambience rating is for the patio, which is quite nice and covered.
Lovely meal, as always. Service was spotty; might have been busier than usual. Had to request a second .5l of beer four times, twice with our friendly otherwise helpful server, twice with another fellow who helped with serving. Such is life. Also had a side dish (we forgot about it ourselves) delivered, with a gracious apology, about 3/4 If the way through the meal. Again, these things happen. Only real gripe: the interior lighting is rather horrible CFL or LED of the harsh “daylight” type. Created a cafeteria feeling in anotherwise pleasant interior. Hoping the good folks will eventually transition to a more subdued, cozier but if lighting. A tealight on the table would be a nice touch. Still, Cafe Berlin remains one of our favorite Capitol Hill spots for dinner before the (Folger) Theater, or for a nice liter of fine beer in the boxwood hedged garden. Prosit!
Good Octoberfest beer and food. Go for it.
Sauerbraten had an off taste, likely due to an excessive amount of browning sauce. Kasespatzle was over salted almost to the point of being inedible. Service was mediocre at best.
We attended the Oktoberfest kickoff and pig roast. The owner, Clytie, and head chef, Martin, made the event so special; greeting guests and coming out to check on how we enjoyed the roast pig. They had special Oktoberfest biers on tap and all the authentic Oktoberfest fare. A tent was set up for the main outside dining area complete with hop wreaths and garlands; it truly felt like a little slice of the Oide Weisn brought to America!
We stopped for lunch and enjoyed our visit.
Very good menu selection. Both our meals were very good and the german beer was a perfect way to top it off.
Great meal, good beer selection, and friendly wait staff.
If your looking for authentic German food in D.C.then this place is for you, authentic beer selection and great menu items!
Food was spectacular. I have a lot of experience with German cuisine and they struck the perfect balance between authenticity and exploration. Solid German beer list, especially given the small size of place. Very friendly servers. And Senator Collins was even there!
Fantastic surprise. Only 0.4 mile walk from Union Station. Worth every step. Cozy atmosphere, ground level with small bar area separated by wall. Some outdoor seating as well but inside is somewhat more formal than Cafe Mozart (also in DC). Food is unpretentious and just downright mouthwatering, bordering on amazing. Authentic German draft selection and interesting Austrian/German wine list, including dessert wines. Surprising takes on standard cocktails. Small tables with intimate setting yet sufficient space for small groups. Kids could eat here too, if they enjoy German cuisine. Waiters provide very helpful service, suggestions, and guidance with menu choices. When Bavarian Chef is too far away, Cafe Berlin is an excellent substitute. Dessert and appetizer selections were also creative - not just the usual suspects.
We were happy to find a German Restaurant after having eaten fast food for the last two weeks. Our meal was excellent and the service very friendly. We enjoyed every minute!
back at old favorite, but I wish they had the full menu available at brunch.
Great little German restaurant in DC. The food was great and the service was nice. They did not rush us out of there. Recommend asking for the outdoor seating if the weather is nice. Overall a great experience for authentic German food and beer. You won’t be disappointed.
Cafe Berlin is our special place for an evening out -20 years plus. We drive an hour to get there and it is always worth it. Every time we go there is something new and something old. Wish we lived closer and could dine here more often
Café Berlin just keeps getting better. Great food, good staff and the rotating offerings of fine German draft beers always worth drinking.
Our food and drink was delicious, large portions. We loved the German look and feel of the biergarten. The indoors was nice as well. Would definitely recommend and return!
We ate out on the patio. There were only two waiting staff for the whole restaurant so service was very very slow! We ordered two pretzel appetizers. The pretzels were pathetic. The top of the pretzel was normal size but the bottoms of the pretzels were so small that there was nothing really there. Overall the food was very good. We ordered the Sauerbraten, Jagerschnitzel and Goulasch. If it wasn’t for the staffing issue I would have given it more stars but the service was so bad I probably won’t be back.
