About Cafe Bastille
Cafe Bastille has terrace seating with heating lamps and a canopy. The seating is bistro style and offers about 50 seats outdoors and 80 seats indoors. The ambiance is incredibly relax and fun. Cafe Bastille is 25 year old and was the first restaurant on Belden Alley. Private dining area downstairs is great for special event such as birthday parties, business lunches and dinners, rehearsal dinners, etc...We also have two Lunch Prix Fixe Menus $16.5 for special daily entree and $19.00 for choice of soup or salad + special daily entree. we offer as well a 3-course Dinner Prix Fixe for $35 (Soup/Salad + Entree + Dessert). I remember when Café Bastille was the only happening place on Belden Lane about 25 years ago! And it still holds up today, even with all the other restaurants in this famed alley. The casual ambience, the menu, and the food still holds up after all these years. And it still feels so French!
For lunch, while I usually prefer one of the crepe lunches (all come with salad), because I had a dinner date that evening, I chose the Salade Nicoise for lunch, which is always good. My friend had the Roast Beef au Ju (all sandwiches also come with salad), which he enjoyed immensely. It was a bit filling for him.
This is a great go-to place for almost any occasion. Best of all, I like the French atmosphere: the narrow dining space with a bar that reminds me of a neighborhood café in Paris; downstairs makes me think of the Metro with its décor; and the outdoor seating feels like you're dining in the Left Bank! You can't go wrong here!
We were a group of 12 that included friends of 40 years and our 20 something children. We sat outside which was excellent. A wide selection of food and everyone was pleased with their dishes. My rabbit was the best I have ever had. Very good wine, cocktail, and beer selection. Convenient to the BART so SF and Oakland people were happy. I thought the service was excellent. I would go again.
I thought we were going to a down-to-earth and delicious restaurant, based on the reviews. The table was outside and wobbly (but thought it was sort of quaint), but the food was not good. The onion soup was really heavy and sweet, the salmon was undercooked (enough that I left one of the two pieces uneaten), and the coq au vin had chicken with a lot of fat. The taste of the coq au vin was off. The waitress and other staff were very nice and we didn't arrive until 9 pm, so I didn't want to complain. Paid about $65 before taxes, no drinks. With all the great restaurants in SF, I wouldn't come back.
Food was great as usual. I switched to a salad with a shrimp addition this time which did not disappoint. The pork my client had looked so good I wanted to trade! I had the French Onion soup to star which had a little twist of sweetness to it, Unusual but good. My client ordered a side of green vegetable after noticing the plate had only meat and a starch. While our server was quick, attentive and helpful he was not able to make up for the slow kitchen. We had finished our meal and the side of green vegetable had still not arrived so he suggested we cancel which we did. A neighboring dessert looked awesome but we did not indulge. This is a nice lunch location, intimate cozy. Not comfortable for more than 4 in a group, even outside.
I met friends here for a dinner and was not disappointed. I ordered the French onion soup which was good, slightly sweet, the Beef Bourgogne, which was tender and tasty, and had the chocolate mouse cake for dessert with a double espresso. Overall the ambiance was casual, the service good, the food good and the prices fair.
C'est fabuleux! On vient de celebrer l'occasion d'engagement de mon amie au laboratoire archaeologique en Grece. Elle ne connait pas du tout le cafe mais elle en etait ravie! Food was overall decent, with some bright points (carpaccio!), and cocktails were tasty, but not over the top. Service was pretty slow, especially considering that the place was not at all busy. Perhaps they were shorthanded. I guess this yielded an "authentic" French restaurant experience.
As always, we were warmly welcomed and talked with the bartender about our wines and cheese appetizers at the bar before we were seated. We were not rushed so we could catch up with each other and enjoy a leisurely meal ending with espresso just the way we like it with a twist of lemon.
Restaurant staff treated us so well, ensuring that our special-occasion brunch was enjoyed by our large group. The tasty menu selections suited us all. Sitting outside was particularly lovely—hanging out in a mellow S.F. environment and appreciating good food and one another.
We were very impressed with Cafe. Bastille. The food was outstanding and the atmosphere was truly a Francophile's dream. The inside was indistinguishable from a cafe on the Rive Gauche, except that the waitress did not look down her nose when we spoke en Anglais, s'il vous plais.
Give Cafe Bastille a try, you will become a fan.
We were 6 for Easter Brunch and the only people in the restaurant so it was very pleasant. Our waiter from Martinique was charming. The 10 year old didn't like her creme anglaise French Toast - she's more of a purist. It was a bit sweet for our taste too. The Ile Flotante had a much too liquid creme anglaise and the waiter said the chef was trying something new...the traditional way is best. The rest of the dishes were good and we had a good time.
