The seating is bistro style and offers about 50 seats outdoors and 80 seats indoors.
The ambiance is just as you would find in any Parisian brasserie with friendly and fun service.

Best food I've had in the city, no joke! Good portions and amazing customer service. No complaints, will have to come back again soon!
Fantastic spot! The Merguez were great, and the Service was personable and attentive. I will definitely return!
Nice ambiance, food was good, not great. Service was above average. Using a Groupon was disappointing. Seems like it wasn’t that great of a value. They charge tax on the whole amount of the meal and add the gratuity before you even get the bill so there go any savings.
We sat downstairs which wasn’t as enjoyable at the vibe upstairs. Service was excellent. Food was very good.
Loved the authenticity, the atmosphere and the delicious food. This truly has the feel of a Parisian neighborhood hot spot. Will certainly be returning. A+++++++.
The food was delicious, service was thoughtful and attentive. We were celebrating a friend's birthday, and the waitstaff handled the dessert request beautifully. Definitely will be back. Grateful to all for making our friend happy!
The food was good. The onion soup was a little on the sweet side. The chicken dish was quite tasty. We had a Groupon and even with that we felt the total cost of the meal (Groupon plus tax, tip) was not worth the money we spent.
Great French food they know what they’ve doing. Everything was delicious and special!
Pre Fix was great & a good value.
Wonderful meal and service
The Moules Marinieres were cold!
The cheese plate to share was ridiculously small (very small pieces) so you don't really share anything.
This is an update to my prior reviews. The regular waitress the perfect blend of friendly and professional) was not there...out on pregnancy leave...back in October). So, service wasn't quite as wonderful as usual, but still good. Other than daily specials (usually one soup and one entree), the menu is the same bistro French as forever. This makes good sense as there is not a loser here. Everything uses quality ingredient, is well prepared and presented. Entrees are $28 -$34, Full bar with moderate pricing. Short wine list with some nice selections, but least expensive is $48. Overall, not the "bargain" is was some years ago, but still a really very good French bistro experience in a great setting on Belden Alley (with covered and heated [when desired] outdoor seating).
Excellent food and service, I am glad I spotted this place during my holiday in San Fransisco!
My friend and I both had a wonderful lunch. Wine, pate, crocque monsieur/crepes, and floating island for dessert. Thank God we walked several blocks to and from the restaurant! It was a fun day!
I had the salad for lunch and added a perfectly cooked piece of Salmon. I'll be back!
Great food. Excellent service. Good value.
This place is solid!
Solid outdoor space!
Solid flavor and courses!
Prixe fixe is NOT dead!
There was a discrepancy as the menu uploaded to the website advertises the price as $39, the current menu at the restaurant is $42 = $3 more.
Three Course Dinner is:
1) Soup of the Day, French onion soupe gratinee (GET THIS!) or baby lettuce salade
2) Boeuf Bourguignon, coq au vin, moules frites (GET THIS Normande is cream, bacon, mushroom) or mushroom fettucine
3) Raspberry mousse or Pave chocolate mousse
We had the Soup of the Day (Lentil with bacon), the French Onion Soup was deeeeelicious, super hot and cheesy with a deep carmelized onion flavor! yum!
We both had moules frites in both versions: Marinieres is classic white wine, shallots and parsley - MINE, the Normade was sooo good. I like to open them ALL first so I can just eat them with a big spoon without stopping to open them - the cream - bacon and mushroom is also super garlicky - yummmmy!
For dessert, we got one of each and they were equally delicious as the chocolate has a hard layer of chocolate on top of the mousse.
With one drink each (red wine and Olivier's Side Car (cognac, cointreau, grand marnier, lemon juice, orange juice & orange peel) the tax was steep at $10 and the other mandatory SF tax of around $6 - the tab was right at $120.
We did have leftovers which the waiter gladly put together safely so that it would not drip or spill - thank you!
Thank you and we will be back!
Great food, reasonably priced. Nice ambience
Old school cooking, same old menu for 35 years............
Amazing food, ambience and service. If I lived here this would be a regular place to eat!! Highly recommended
Service was very friendly and even gave my boyfriend a nice little souvenir for his birthday after they sang to him.
I hadn't been to Cafe Bastille in 5 years, since I moved out of the city. I had bought a Groupon to remind me to go back...then the Groupon expired. But, in the great way that Groupon works, it still had value. So, I convinced 2 of my oldest friends to join me for dinner at Cafe Bastille. One had been before, and one had never been. The Mushroom Soup was silky, earthy, creamy, and, somehow, light and incredibly satisfying. The boeuf bourguignon was rich, filling, and homey, with enough beef and baby carrots for us all to have a taste. The duck confit cassoulet was tender, savory, thick, and everything a cassoulet is meant to be. And, of course, we had to get pommes frites just because. We sat snugged in next to a full table of a local couple with their visiting parents. We chatted and compared meals. One of them had ordered the hachis parmentier, and man, that looked great...next time.... Our server was always available. Our water and wine and bread refilled as needed. I love this place. We did go early since we were heading out to see a show. The noise level at that hour (630p) was not crazy. I've been there when it was deafening, so plan accordingly.
Excellent as usual!
Had a wonderful evening with friends on Bastille Day. The food and service were great. My only disappointment was they were running out of choices fairly early in the evening and we had to make second choices for a couple of items.
Food was great but whatever I ordered initially was told they ran out of that item. And this was a fixed menu for Bastille day. We were seated next to 20-30 people super loud group at the lower level dining area. We couldn't hear each other at all and have to cancel the 3rd course as we could not enjoy our dinner anymore.
We went for Bastille Day this year, and it was crazy busy (as expected) but we had good wine and good food to keep us happy. We've also gone for dates and for general-purpose dining and have always had a great time.
A little trip to Paris on Belden Ave. Food and service is always consistent. French fries never disappoint. A visit to the ladies room and for sure you feel you are in France. Happy Bastille Day!!!
Delicious food, good service, fun (but tight) room and French vibe.
What's better than eating alfresco on a gorgeous day in the city?
Uh, getting your hair cut for $24!!
Seriously...this is my go-to place to stuff my face on weekends when The Foundation Cafe is closed.
Generous portions to share and love the mussels normande- - - with bacon and leeks in a rich creamy sauce - must have frites with garlic aioli!
Croque monsiour is outta this world with delicious bechamel Plus put an egg on it!
Must order Olivier's Sidecar - classic served upright and ice cold - delicious!!
It was a family outing and the dinner was delicious. We had the formule or prix fixe dinner and it was exquisite. Authentic and just great. Table red wine was good !
Will definitely go back again and again.
Small bistro - authentic French ambiance with a classic menu. Food was a little mixed this visit. Salad was outstanding. French onion soup was oddly very sweet (we learned brown sugar had been added, so sent it back). Coq au vin had delicious flavors but very overcooked chicken. Have had better food in the past - hope this was an off night. Service was very good.
I had a great time at Cafe Bastille. The food was delicious and the wait staff are very attentive and helpful. This is a great restaurant and I intend to return.
Café Bastille is consistently outstanding - have yet to be disappointed in the food or the service.
We had a coupon so we were limited to the Prix Fix menu which limits your choices, but the food was very good, Moules et frites and Bouef Borgignon (sp?). It was a cool Monday night and sat outside but they had the heater on so it was very comfortable. The only complaint was the outdoor table and chairs were old, ricketly and uncomfortable. They need an upgrade there.
Great atmosphere, foods were just okay. We ordered two entrees, the duck confit and trout. The duck confit was dry and too much bean, and trout actually had some bones in it.
Really enjoyed this restaurant. The crepes were very good. A bit loud sitting outside because of energetic groups, but they all were very nice. Would definitely eat there again.
Full Disclosure: we had a Groupon for the prixe-fixe meal which is usually $39/ea. Our Groupon entitiled us to 2 meals at $46.
Originally we were going to sit outside, but it had turned a bit chilly, and we decided to sit inside. Our waitress was very good, would come and ask about drinks, at which time I presented the Groupon to her. She was very pleasant and accommodating. My wife ordered an appetizer off the prixe-fixe menu, Steak Tartare. In return, I had the French Onion Soup Gratinee, and her salad, which came with the selection. The soup was very good, rich, thick, with croutons and lots of melted, baked cheese. Even though it was not prime season, we ordered the moules (mussels) in white wine and garlic, as we both fancied them. Dessert was a raspberry tart and a chocolate mousse, both delicious. Our waitress served us complimentary coffee to complete our meal.
As always, the atmosphere was warm and embracing. The staff are knowledgeable, attentive and unobtrusive. Fine wines and wonderful food. Enjoyed the variety of diners, young and old speaking various languages. A San Francisco gem.
Great place for lunch!
Always outstanding food and service ! Wonderful ambiance, authentic French cuisine
It was a wonderful way to end the work week!
