One of my faves and also with my friends and co-workers. Their French onion soup is always great; the mushroom, spinach and goat cheese crepes, OMG to DIE FOR! I recently shared a large bowl of mussels (in wine sauce) with my friend and the crepes and the mushroom fettucine. Everything was yummy, the service was great and we left feeling very full, very satisfied and happy that we chose to come back here again so soon after the last week.
Fantastic food, great atmosphere, terrific service. Cannot say enough good things about this restaurant.
Food was spot on everyone really enjoyed the food. All team was very content. Allowed good conversation, great service.
Cafe Bastille reminds me of a cozy restaurant tucked away in an alley in Paris. We arrived early due to theatre tickets, and received excellent service. The coq au vin was a bit salty, but everything else was delicious: French bread, French onion soup, Moules Normand (mussels in cream with bacon and mushrooms), the best frites (french fries) and an outstanding chocolate cake. Service was top notch. We loved the experience enough to come back for breakfast, where we enjoyed perfectly prepared eggs benedict with jambon (French ham) and a delicious French omelet. Again the service was incomparable. This is the first time we ever ate at the same restaurant twice on the same visit to SF.
Good food came out quickly and the server was incredibly attentive and polite. The day couldn't have been nicer either, which makes this place when it's sunny.
I have not been to Cafe B. in years and it was always my favorite French restaurant in San Francisco. BUT I will never return. Not only was the service terrible, the food was an embarrassment. We both ordered salad nicoise and we got lettuce out of a bag, stringy, poor quality tuna, a dab of dressing, 4 green beans and even an undersized boiled egg! It as obvious that they are cutting back. It was disgusting and a waste of my time and my friends....
Excellent. Our server was particularly lovely. We did the prix fie menu and everything was prepared perfectly.
We've eaten at the Bastille dozens and dozens of times over the years and it never fails us. The food, service, cocktails-wine and atmosphere keep locals coming back and tourists lining up!
We sat outside in the covered patio. The area was not decorated and next to a service corner of the restaurant next door. We were constantly bothered by a light that was being turned on and off. Belden Pl is a private alley where a handful of small restaurants are located.
The service was nice and very efficient. They offer a three course prefix for $39. My wife ordered well...French onion soup to die for, really good mushroom pasta and a raspberry cake. My order ($40 restaurant week prefix) was a bland salmon crostini, two very small rack of lamb chops served on an a ratatouille that was oily and a great chocolate ganache cake. The wine we order was suggested by our server and was very good but overpriced at $60. Overall Cafe Bastille was a good experience and we will return, but I will order differently.
Wonderful place for a date with great food and service. Romantic ambiance.
Had the pleasure of choosing cafe Bastille for SF restaurant week!! Their chosen menu was to die for!! I made a joke with the waitress that my boyfriend complains I never finish my meal, and each course was so delightful, I cleaned each plate!!
I felt like I was back in France for a night, from the French host that seated us, to the quintessential French cuisine options, to the excellent service and to the “merci, bonne soirée” greeting as we left the restaurant. It wasn’t crowded, it was delicious and the bread was hot with the perfect balance of crunch and fluffiness.
Consistently great. Luncheons are always satisfying!
Very nice cafe. Great food.
We really appreciated the attentive and relaxed service from both the waitress and the bus person. We'd go back again in a second. Love the location on an alley street in the Financial District. The menu was pedestrian French with all the usual suspects, but everything was done very well, tasted great, nicely timed each course.
A favourite for many years. Lovely presentation of delicious dishes. Friendly and helpful service. Relaxed ambiance thst allows plenty of time for conversation over drinks and food at the bar or a table inside or outside.
Good foods and drinks.
We went to Cafe Bastille for a post-wedding brunch. I set up a reservation through Open Table and they were very willing to accommodate a 15-party group. We arrived with just 9, but they still adjusted our table for less. Everyone was attentive to our needs, the food was amazing, and we enjoyed every minute of it.
I have been dining at Cafe Bastille for many years and the food is consistent. I love the outdoor seating when the weather allows. The waiters are always friendly and eager to serve. I will definitely be back soon.
Everything was great. We hadn’t been to Cafe Bastille as a family in a long time and we all had a wonderful dinner, from the warm and attentive service to the delicious mussels and trout and of course the onion soup. Merci!
I remember when Café Bastille was the only happening place on Belden Lane about 25 years ago! And it still holds up today, even with all the other restaurants in this famed alley. The casual ambience, the menu, and the food still holds up after all these years. And it still feels so French!
For lunch, while I usually prefer one of the crepe lunches (all come with salad), because I had a dinner date that evening, I chose the Salade Nicoise for lunch, which is always good. My friend had the Roast Beef au Ju (all sandwiches also come with salad), which he enjoyed immensely. It was a bit filling for him.
This is a great go-to place for almost any occasion. Best of all, I like the French atmosphere: the narrow dining space with a bar that reminds me of a neighborhood café in Paris; downstairs makes me think of the Metro with its décor; and the outdoor seating feels like you're dining in the Left Bank! You can't go wrong here!
A fun and interesting location.
The food completely missed.
Great food and service. Bread was warm and crusty, serving portion was a nice size, good choices in prix fixe menu. Server was friendly and accommodating!
Service is slow
Cafe Bastille was great for our big group. The service was terrific and everyone enjoyed their dinner. I definitely recommend it!
We were a group of 12 that included friends of 40 years and our 20 something children. We sat outside which was excellent. A wide selection of food and everyone was pleased with their dishes. My rabbit was the best I have ever had. Very good wine, cocktail, and beer selection. Convenient to the BART so SF and Oakland people were happy. I thought the service was excellent. I would go again.
Great food, super staff, hidden gem. Easy to get to in the heart of the city but tucked away so that their is quiet and you feel a sense of privacy. Great for private conversations or quiet dates.
I thought we were going to a down-to-earth and delicious restaurant, based on the reviews. The table was outside and wobbly (but thought it was sort of quaint), but the food was not good. The onion soup was really heavy and sweet, the salmon was undercooked (enough that I left one of the two pieces uneaten), and the coq au vin had chicken with a lot of fat. The taste of the coq au vin was off. The waitress and other staff were very nice and we didn't arrive until 9 pm, so I didn't want to complain. Paid about $65 before taxes, no drinks. With all the great restaurants in SF, I wouldn't come back.
The service was wonderful, but the food lacked a little inspiration
Food was great as usual. I switched to a salad with a shrimp addition this time which did not disappoint. The pork my client had looked so good I wanted to trade! I had the French Onion soup to star which had a little twist of sweetness to it, Unusual but good. My client ordered a side of green vegetable after noticing the plate had only meat and a starch. While our server was quick, attentive and helpful he was not able to make up for the slow kitchen. We had finished our meal and the side of green vegetable had still not arrived so he suggested we cancel which we did. A neighboring dessert looked awesome but we did not indulge. This is a nice lunch location, intimate cozy. Not comfortable for more than 4 in a group, even outside.
