Café Ba-Ba-Reeba Ratings and Reviews
One of my favorite restaurants for tapas in the Lincoln Park/Lakeview Area! The service is great, even when it's near capacity and the food never disappoints. I always recommend this location to students in the area because it's affordable and even offers discounts for certain schools!
Ba-Ba-Reeba is one of our go-to spots in the neighborhood. This visit was part of a family "tradition" - we always come here for lunch/dinner after I do a crafting class at the nearby Paper Source. Its a lovely place for me to recount my experience at the class to my husband.
ZERO COMPLAINTS! I have Celiac, and they were MORE than accommodating. Gluten free bread at no extra cost. Traditional sangria was delish. The scallops tapa was to die for, and everything else we ordered was so good too! Extremely knowledgeable waitress, very helpful busboys that came around often (as tapas came out at different times thorughout the evening - though somehow in the perfect order!) The atmosphere is fun but can also be romantic, without being stuffy.
We overall had a great experience at Cafe-Ba-Ba-Reeba, but the only reason I don't give it a 5 is because I am gluten intolerant and I was told I would be brought gluten free bread with my meal and when the plate showed up I assumed the bread on the plate was gluten free like I was told it would be, but then the waitress brought over the gluten free bread fifteen minutes later after I had already eaten the regular bread. It was disappointing that they were not as conscious of allergies as I would have liked, but the rest of the meal and service was perfect.
I enjoyed the food, the service and the overall atmosphere....and I would go again. I have been there 4 times now and often bring friends who visit from out of town. While I was there on a Saturday evening and I realize that is a big financial night for the business with full bookings, I found that our table was so cramped that we were half into an aisle and my two guests were getting bumped all evening by customers and staff alike even if they were doing their best to not do so. We happened to be next to a table as well with a group who spent the evening screaming, well beyond an enthusiastic, boisterous group.....clearly over the line and yet no one did anything about it. Tricky thing to do but just a thought that there should be a line by the wait staff/ownership to keep a reasonable environment for everyone. You need a rating metric for noise level that is above "energetic" when it tips into "annoying/uncomfortable".
Café Ba Ba Reeba is one of our favorite restaurants in Chicago. Of their tapas I would humbly argue that the grilled squid (#42) is by far the best, although the braised short rib is a second close. We ordered two orders of the paella (it’s only available in orders of 2 or more). It was good, albeit overall unimpressive. BUT: the FLAN. I cannot brag enough about their Natilla Flan. Don’t waste your time with any other dessert because it will only disappoint when compared with this indescribably delicious flan. Thank you so much for a wonderful night.
My husband and I went here before going to a play at the Steppenwolf Theatre. We hadn't been in many years and the food didn't disappoint us. I long for the bacon wrapped dates. My husband liked his octopus. It can get prices with so many small plates. I was surprised how crowded it was on a Sunday at 6. Many families and very noisy. The waiter was busy and not very friendly. The busboy saw to our needs. We got in and out in an hour and were in time for our play.
First table seating had one of 4 chairs in a traffic aisle and it bumped up to next table. We asked to be re-seated and Cafe B was immediately accommodating. But this seems consistent with reservations being made by Open Table instead of calling restaurant: horrendous seating. The two worst seating arrangements I've ever had were both from Open Table reservations (and they were made weeks in advance!!)
As for restaurant, all fine, except we were advised to order paella 30-40 minutes in advance so we ordered small plate tapas in meantime. AS soon as they arrived, a fellow came out with the paella and was "visibly miffed" when we said there is no room on table and we're hardly ready for it.
A group of friends and I decided to meet here for dinner after work. When we arrived, the hostess informed us that they were running a bit behind. However, the wait was not too long. We were seated fairly quickly. Our server came to us and suggested his favorite items on the menu. Since it is a tapas style restaurant we ordered about six different items from the menu and shared each of them. Overall, the food was tasty and it was great to be able to taste so many different dishes
We had the rudest, most condescending waiter named Elohim P. All four of us noticed how rude our waiter was from the start by the way he spoke to us. We have eaten here before so we knew what we wanted (lamb, shrimp, meatballs, chicken, beef empanada, potato salad, desserts, cocktails & beer). Although the food was good, we will not be back due to the terribly unprofessional wait staff.
It’s an incredible place to have tapas. I had the best empanada I have ever eaten. The only thing that I didn’t like was the table. It was too small even though it was my boyfriend and I. We ordered several tapas and sangria and the table didn’t have space to put everything on.
I don't know the name of our waitress but she was spectacular! So good in fact I had to leave a 20% tip and I NEVER do that. My daughter and I had dined at Fogo de Chao a few weeks ago and the wait staff was annoying, kept interrupting us and made us feel rushed. I also like the food at Baba Reba, we've been coming for years. The service and food were excellent. Wish I knew my waitress' name because we'll be back in 2 weeks and I'd like her to wait on us. See you Veteran's Day.
