Unfortunately Cactus did live up to it's reviews from trip adviser. Staf was frendly and the main courses (X4) where good. Ceviche appetizers were blend and portions were slall ( for 18$ more was expected obviously).
Main courses where averaging 30$ per person and, although decent size and taste, no "omg" were present all around...
Appetizers were delivered around 3-4 minutes appart between guess at the same table ( again, only 4 of us) and sadly, same with the main course. The poor server was trying her best but ...voila!
We travel all over and do not count or budget meals, no limits were applied here money wise, we just wanted an honest place that delivers on a scale that maches its pricing. Did not find Cactus honest that way hence me taking 5 min to write this review.
Near 300$ (4 people), 1 glass of wine each, no desert or aperitifs is too much for this Mexican joint. Sorry, did a lot better elsewhere last week...
Great food and service.
Great food and drinks. Casey was our server and he was excellent. He was helpful, friendly and very efficient.
The food was delicious and our server, Jillian, was outstanding. She was very friendly and made great recommendations!
Great food, although it took over 20 mins for our appetizers to come out. Wait staff was accommodating though and gave us a small discount for the inconvenience.
Great spot to meet up with long lost girlfriends! Its quiet and tables are not too close for comfort. Lots of great salads to choose from
Our waitress was so nice but unfortunately the food took a little longer than I expected it to take.
Cactus is a great place to try something different, experience new flavors and new foods. There are so many Chinese, Japanese , Korean and Italian restaurants in Kailua. So, having this restaurant here in Kailua is perfect!
We were celebrating a Birthday for one of our family members. It had been a while since we visited this place but I remember their Cubano Sandwich very well. I was not disappointed. The combination of meat, cheese, pickles and a few other things on toasted bread was delicious. I added on a side of sweet potato fries and my meal was complete. We also tried the Argentine Fry Bread with Pineapple-Manzano Chile Jelly which was superb, a new favorite. The consistency reminded me of a doughnut, almost like beignets (French doughnut) without the powdered sugar on top. I wanted to eat the whole plate myself.
The only thing about our experience at the restaurant was that we waited a little over half an hour or so before our party got our main meals. I just wanted to make mention because you may have to sit for a bit. The food was delicious though so we feel it’s worth the wait.
I really like this place the food is great and all by my goodness what happened to the service? If you go here be prepared to wait an hour just to get food even if it’s half empty. I hope they make it better or that’ll be the last time I go which I really don’t want it to be.
My friend had been there and suggested it for us to go to lunch. We both loved the entire experience. Friendly staff, great food choices, loved the specialized cocktails and tried a couple of different ones. They did not disappoint. I wish I lived closer as we drove about 30 minutes to get there but it was well worth it and would do it again, under similar circumstances.
Cactus was a good experience. Nice to have a place on Oahu which served tapa style plates. Drinks were tasty. Overall it was a good experience.
We will be back!! Food and service was exceptional! Very accommodating ‼️
Overall it was a good experience with just a few minor hiccups:
Service was a bit slow - it took at least 15 minutes from the time we got our drinks to the time they took our order.
There was dried red wine on the foot of my wine glass. However they took the glass away and brought a clean one and even wiped it down in front of me just to be sure it was clean.
A small tiny piece of plastic wrap was stuck to my braised short ribs. It was probably from when they took it out of the pot and transferred it to a warming dish. It may have gotten stuck or fallen in by accident.
They were very accommodating to the issues and comped us the appetizer.
Great response and very quick to resolve issues.
Wonderful, fresh food! Favorite part was the dessert !
The service was great and food delicious! Thank you!
Better for lunch than dinner. Dinner rush seemed to overwhelm the wait staff and kitchen. Food was nowhere near as good as what we had when we ate lunch here previously. Sat for our 7:15 reservation at 7:40 and didn’t have food on the table until 8:30. Had to ask for our drinks twice before we got them. One plate of fish had to be sent back to be re-fired as it was completely raw.
Great food specials and great staff and Gulian was awesome♡
Service was very slow. Good didn’t take long once we put in our order but it took a while for the waitstaff to bring drinks, take out order, and bring the check. The food was mediocre. The three-cheese dip was overpriced and not especially tasty. The goat cheese croquettes were good.
Great food and nice service. We are always impressed when we come here. A little pricey but worth it
Nice combination of salads and meat dishes. Frozen sangria/margarita is a signature drink I order every time. Took 1/2 my Loma soltada home - several pieces of sirloin on bed of rice with slightly crispy fingerling potatoes and very crispy onion strips. Yum!
Tostadas were ok, fish was tasty but one meal would be plenty for two. Tapanade tapas were really soggy--the bread was not cooked. Soup and chocolate dessert good and staff friendly. The company was fun but the food was not wonderful. It's convenient but not as "authentic" as I was hoping.
The food was amazing and creative and the drinks were strong and delicious! I highly recommend the “swirl”
Always delicious food!!
Went for brunch here for the first time their breakfast menu on Sundays goes till 2 p.m. and is delicious. I'm not sure if I like it more than the regular dinner menu. The swirl drinks are always spot-on. The only problem with today was that there was only two servers for the entire place and one was doubling as the bartender. The kitchen was also very slow and it took us a long time to get our food we were late for our movie. We came in at 12:15 and our movie was at 2... this is not our usual experience.
Pinchos - squash & goat cheese coquettes, local fish tacos and turkey chorizo tacos - instead of dinner, were our choices for celebrating National Beer Day! Two weeks earlier for a dinner date we enjoyed the Chilean clambake and the melt-in-your mouth Cuban style short ribs. We love this restaurant and it's the first one in Kailua that we recommend to others.
The service was a little slow, but it could have been during a busy time. Took 10 minutes for the kids scoop of ice cream. However, servers kept bussing empty plates and checking on us so it was pleasant. They seem to turn tables quickly so if you walk in and they're booked it shouldn't be a long wait.
The guacamole appetizer with tortilla chips is so delicious!!
The Farmers salad is so fresh and yummy and it had the Peruvian tear drop peppers! First time to ever taste those yummy little things and they were so sweet! They have a great selection of wines and tequilas to quench your thirst!
Great food! Good drinks! Casual atmosphere. Bit pricey.
Not as crowded ; had a few vegetarian options wait staff was very responsive to
our needs ; food was ok but the last dish of stacked enchildas really blew us away
Imaginative menu and bar with a South American flair. The appetizers are great, including the best guacamole and fresh-made chips in town. You can't miss on the daily specials, but regular menu's nearly as good. It's a good place to hang out in the afternoon if you like ono pupu and cocktails.
The empanadas are so flavorful and the wait staff was super helpful and personable.
I made a reservation and the only thing that was available was two high top tables of different heights pushed together. That didn't work very well for us. My son ordered a fish taco, the fish was dry and it was tiny. Because the portions seemed tiny we ordered a large order of the fried peppers, to our surprise we got a lot of them but they were not good. My husbands enchiladas were more like a tostada and had a weird flavor. I ordered a salad and that wasn't very good either, large pieces of uncut greens that were hard to eat, with potatoes on top instead of croutons. For the price, the ambiance isn't very good. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant and we won't return. I've had plenty of other Latin food and this doesn't measure up.
Cactus is a favorite of mine! I've probably eaten there three dozen times. The food is different, locally sourced, and yummy. Get the Argentine Fry bread with pepper jelly for sure! My favorite meal currently is the Chilean 'Clam Bake', but I've had many faves. Also, while I stay away from Sangria, typically, their house-made frozen red sangria is delicious!
As always great dining experience. Sat outside on the patio and it was quite and beautiful. Enjoyed our drinks and appetizers without feeling rushed before our meals. Food was amazing as usual. Always fresh and locally food. Our server was very pleasant and took great care of us. Cactus is a must go to in Kailua!! You will leave with a smile on your face . FYI best happy hour in Kailua!! Must order the sliders and croquettes.
I have never had a bad meal at Cactus. The service is always excellent the food is stellar. The menu doesn't really explain the food terribly well and I am usually a bit surprised...but pleasantly so.
Amazing food and nice service...Ambiance needs a little improvement to match the high end food. Maybe at least some candles on the tables?
We dined here to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and once again were very pleased with our meal. I had the Big Belly Empanadas and my wife had the local fish special (cobia). Both were excellent, and we capped off the meal with a luscious dessert. I highly recommend Cactus for their imaginative dishes, fine service and their extra attention to details!
Slow start on service with water and cocktails but Cindy turned it around. She knows the menu well and everything was back on track. Food was hot an very good.
My huevos rancheros was a mess. It was nothing like a real Mexican huevos rancheros dish. It was soupy, overly liquidy and with a strange spice that I did not like. It only came with 4 tiny tortillas that was nowhere near enough for the rest of the dish. The stuffed fried bread was very good, like a malasadas with a fruity cream cheese spread on top. The torta was tasty but the filling was sparse, could have used more filling.
We were 4 people and all were happy with their meal. Our food seemed fresh and was tasty, plus the ambiance was on the quiet side, so that we could have a conversation without straining to hear one another. This is important to me.
