Tostadas were ok, fish was tasty but one meal would be plenty for two. Tapanade tapas were really soggy--the bread was not cooked. Soup and chocolate dessert good and staff friendly. The company was fun but the food was not wonderful. It's convenient but not as "authentic" as I was hoping.
Went for brunch here for the first time their breakfast menu on Sundays goes till 2 p.m. and is delicious. I'm not sure if I like it more than the regular dinner menu. The swirl drinks are always spot-on. The only problem with today was that there was only two servers for the entire place and one was doubling as the bartender. The kitchen was also very slow and it took us a long time to get our food we were late for our movie. We came in at 12:15 and our movie was at 2... this is not our usual experience.
Pinchos - squash & goat cheese coquettes, local fish tacos and turkey chorizo tacos - instead of dinner, were our choices for celebrating National Beer Day! Two weeks earlier for a dinner date we enjoyed the Chilean clambake and the melt-in-your mouth Cuban style short ribs. We love this restaurant and it's the first one in Kailua that we recommend to others.
The service was a little slow, but it could have been during a busy time. Took 10 minutes for the kids scoop of ice cream. However, servers kept bussing empty plates and checking on us so it was pleasant. They seem to turn tables quickly so if you walk in and they're booked it shouldn't be a long wait.
The guacamole appetizer with tortilla chips is so delicious!!
The Farmers salad is so fresh and yummy and it had the Peruvian tear drop peppers! First time to ever taste those yummy little things and they were so sweet! They have a great selection of wines and tequilas to quench your thirst!
Imaginative menu and bar with a South American flair. The appetizers are great, including the best guacamole and fresh-made chips in town. You can't miss on the daily specials, but regular menu's nearly as good. It's a good place to hang out in the afternoon if you like ono pupu and cocktails.
I made a reservation and the only thing that was available was two high top tables of different heights pushed together. That didn't work very well for us. My son ordered a fish taco, the fish was dry and it was tiny. Because the portions seemed tiny we ordered a large order of the fried peppers, to our surprise we got a lot of them but they were not good. My husbands enchiladas were more like a tostada and had a weird flavor. I ordered a salad and that wasn't very good either, large pieces of uncut greens that were hard to eat, with potatoes on top instead of croutons. For the price, the ambiance isn't very good. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant and we won't return. I've had plenty of other Latin food and this doesn't measure up.
Cactus is a favorite of mine! I've probably eaten there three dozen times. The food is different, locally sourced, and yummy. Get the Argentine Fry bread with pepper jelly for sure! My favorite meal currently is the Chilean 'Clam Bake', but I've had many faves. Also, while I stay away from Sangria, typically, their house-made frozen red sangria is delicious!
As always great dining experience. Sat outside on the patio and it was quite and beautiful. Enjoyed our drinks and appetizers without feeling rushed before our meals. Food was amazing as usual. Always fresh and locally food. Our server was very pleasant and took great care of us. Cactus is a must go to in Kailua!! You will leave with a smile on your face . FYI best happy hour in Kailua!! Must order the sliders and croquettes.
We dined here to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and once again were very pleased with our meal. I had the Big Belly Empanadas and my wife had the local fish special (cobia). Both were excellent, and we capped off the meal with a luscious dessert. I highly recommend Cactus for their imaginative dishes, fine service and their extra attention to details!
My huevos rancheros was a mess. It was nothing like a real Mexican huevos rancheros dish. It was soupy, overly liquidy and with a strange spice that I did not like. It only came with 4 tiny tortillas that was nowhere near enough for the rest of the dish. The stuffed fried bread was very good, like a malasadas with a fruity cream cheese spread on top. The torta was tasty but the filling was sparse, could have used more filling.
Food was wonderful and the staff was great and super friendly. We had the french toast and the breakfast tort (like an awesome big breakfast sandwich) and both were amazing. Meals are a little pricey but worth it. Only drawback was it took our food over 40 minutes to come out after we ordered it.
We had reservations and arrived quite early. No problems though, the staff was very understanding and had us seated within 5 minutes, and, even took our drink order while we were waiting.
The food was absolutely awesome! My wife and I both had the Clam bake for our entrée and chips, guacamole, and the triple salsa for an appetizer. The guacamole appeared to be a whole avocado, which we thought to be a very generous amount!
The service was great! We were very pleased with everyone who came around to check on us and to just say "hello."
Whether visiting or living in Hawaii, my wife and both highly recommend Cactus as place for dinner.

I really liked that I was able to make a reservation on the same day which was super convenient! We had the Ceviché with fish and Dungeness crab which was excellent along with the pork picadillo empanadas for appetizers. My entrees we had the braised short ribs and Jidori chicken breast; the risotto was outstanding. My only con: the tightness of the spaces between the tables which had a diner literally at my back.
We dined specifically to try Chef Thomas' pincho pairings with three Beckmen wines and we were t thrilled. Syrah was paired with smoked veal shank on aa caramelized onion crustini, Niihau lamb chorizo in a gondola pepper was served with a Grenache rose, and the tempura snow crab was accompanied by Le Bec Blanc. Perfect pairings and melt-in-the-mouth food. Of course, we had to share the Big Belly Empanadas, which are always exceptional, especially with the Syrah. Mahalo, Chef Thomas and crew!
Interesting and delicious food, great service. A bit pricy, even for Hawaii. Nicely complex flavors and some unusual items. It's a small restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating and I suspect it could be noisy indoors when it's busy. Only complaint was that the starch and vegetables came out cold (meat was hot). Good enough to eat anyway, but still.
